Duke is a much better football team this year than it was last year, but it looks like another 3-9 season. Everybody loves Coach Cutcliffe, and he’s rebuilding the program the right way, but at some point they have to start winning the games that they are putting themselves in position to win. Being three plays away from 6-2 is not as good as actually being 6-2.

Gophers won both hockey games last night, opening some space between themselves and the rest of the WCHa (men’s) and between themeselves and everyone except Wisconsin (women’s).

The only first half matchup between the top women’s teams in the WCHA that hasn’t happened yet is Minnesota/North Dakota. To date, Wisconsin is 5-1, Minnesota is 2-1 (one more game against Duluth tonight) Duluth is 1-3-1 and the Sux are 0-3-1. And yet the idiots at USCHO.com are saying that Duluth is the best bet to upset Wisconsin for the title, but also asking whether ANYONE [all caps theirs] can beat the Badgers. Conveniently forgotten is that one of these teams actually has beaten Wisconsin (in Madison, no less), and it ain’t Duluth.

    Really.

I do wish the front pagers would use a version control system of some kind that might prevent them from stomping on each other, repeatedly.

Pace themselves out a bit. I have a feeling that John just woke up, jumped in the backhoe to move Tunch out of the way, fired up the browser in the “I have the keys” mode, and started posting without even bothering to check if someone else had started a football thread.

Of course, it is his blog, he can do whatever the frack he wants to, but still…

@Zandar: Zandar, as ‘new guy’, you should almost expect to be stepped on.

That kind of reminds me of the mandatory sexual harassment training we had to get where I work a few years ago. Part of the training was having to watch a video, where one of the characters was ‘new guy’. One of the lines was “Hey New Guy, want to go check out the Laaaaaaydddiiiiies!!!” It was hilariously bad, with terrible acting. For a while, it became traditional to repeat that line to any new male employee when we invited them to lunch on their first day on the job. But perhaps Cain should have watched the video.

    @efgoldman: It’s

Among the University’s oldest and most lasting traditions is the school fight song, “Glory, Glory” which is sung to the tune of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” It was sung at games as early as the 1890s, but arranged in its present form by Georgia musician-composer Hugh Hodgson in 1915. There have been many Bulldog songs through the years and at least two collections dating back to 1909 have been published, but none have enjoyed more acceptance than “Glory, Glory.”

In addition, there is no one more revered by the Bulldog Nation than Larry Munson and he’s from Minnesota.

I defy y’all to come up with a more egregiously offensive fight song than the original lyrics to the “W&L Swing.”

When Washington & Lee’s men fall in line,
We’re gonna win again another time,
    For W&L I yell I yell I yell,
And for the University I yell I yell,
For we will fight fight fight for every yard,
Circle the ends and hit that line right hard,
And we will roll old Sweet Briar on the sod, YES BY GOD,
    Rah! Rah! Rah!

    WTF

A celebrated former assistant to legendary Penn State football head coach Joe Paterno was charged with sexually abusing eight boys, a state prosecutor said on Saturday.
    __
    …
The alleged sexual assaults came to light after a graduate assistant witnessed Sandusky “sexually assaulting a naked boy who appeared to be about 10 years old” at the Lasch Football Building on the Penn State campus late one night in March of 2002, the statement said.
    __
The assistant reportedly heard noise coming from a shower room and entered to see Sandusky sexually assaulting the boy, the statement said.
    __
The graduate assistant told Paterno, who alerted Athletic Director Curley. Curley and Schultz later met with the graduate assistant and then told Sandusky not to bring boys to the football building. But they did not alert police.

@burnspbesq: She won’t be a one-income household and her office is in Queens. I think she’ll end up living further upstate. Her other half got a job offer there too but if it doesn’t pan out her current employer offered to transfer her.

The worst thing about football season? It’s not that long before the Dookies start crowing about basketball season.

@Yutsano: Welcome to the Big Ten. I listen to these local meatballs on sports radio go on and fucking on about the SEC day-in-and-day-out. I know the conference is better but goddamn.

@efgoldman: Sherman didn’t come through Athens. There was some interest in coming to Athens because the Cook Bros. Armory was here, but it was more important to hit places like Atlanta (bigger railroad hub) and Milledgeville (the capital at the time).

Auburn also uses Battle Hymn as one of their fight songs; it sounds better when the Redcoats play it, though.

ETA: my first thought was John was watching a game called by Andre Ware, or maybe Craig James. James was stinking up the Oklahoma game instead.

@Mr Stagger Lee: Sorry…gotten too old to watch football games on November Pacific Northwest nights….

Instead, I’m going to see Evil Dead: The Musical.

And, oh yeah. FEAR THE TREE!

My Hilltoppers won another game in a walkoff.
They have won 5 in a row, two in overtime and today
on a last second field goal. The irony of that is
their placekicking game is terrible. They have used
three kickers and are a combined 4 of 15 on field goals for the year, but have won twice on game ending fgs.

Also, pull for LSU over ‘Bama. WKU plays LSU next week.
If the Tigers lose tonight, the final could be 70-0. If they beat the Tide, it might be only 52-7.

@Raven (formerly stuckinred): It was a beautiful day for football, though our side of the field was pretty chilly in the 2nd half.

Sorry for the late response–we got 2 kittens this past week, and the laptop is staying in a separate room for now. Thank heavens for water pistols.
