Brent Musburger must be calling your game today.
J. Michael Neal
It’s been 33 minutes since the last Open Thread was posted. We don’t need another one. All it does is fracture conversations.
huckster
Didn’t think McCarver-Buck did college football
burnspbesq
Duke is a much better football team this year than it was last year, but it looks like another 3-9 season. Everybody loves Coach Cutcliffe, and he’s rebuilding the program the right way, but at some point they have to start winning the games that they are putting themselves in position to win. Being three plays away from 6-2 is not as good as actually being 6-2.
Villago Delenda Est
Brent Musburger was the first name that came to mind, I must confess.
Is the other one Joe Buck?
Loneoak
Denard, why do you abuse us so?
Gus
Dennis Miller-Tim McCarver?
Zandar
*sigh*
huckster
@burnspbesq: that guy is a good coach, and Ole Miss is certainly feeling the Karma of letting him go.
cathyx
You’re not even going to say what game you’re watching or give us a sample of their announcing?
J. Michael Neal
Gophers won both hockey games last night, opening some space between themselves and the rest of the WCHa (men’s) and between themeselves and everyone except Wisconsin (women’s).
The only first half matchup between the top women’s teams in the WCHA that hasn’t happened yet is Minnesota/North Dakota. To date, Wisconsin is 5-1, Minnesota is 2-1 (one more game against Duluth tonight) Duluth is 1-3-1 and the Sux are 0-3-1. And yet the idiots at USCHO.com are saying that Duluth is the best bet to upset Wisconsin for the title, but also asking whether ANYONE [all caps theirs] can beat the Badgers. Conveniently forgotten is that one of these teams actually has beaten Wisconsin (in Madison, no less), and it ain’t Duluth.
Yutsano
@cathyx: WVU is at halftime. Does that help?
Villago Delenda Est
@J. Michael Neal:
Really.
I do wish the front pagers would use a version control system of some kind that might prevent them from stomping on each other, repeatedly.
Pace themselves out a bit. I have a feeling that John just woke up, jumped in the backhoe to move Tunch out of the way, fired up the browser in the “I have the keys” mode, and started posting without even bothering to check if someone else had started a football thread.
Of course, it is his blog, he can do whatever the frack he wants to, but still…
Mark B.
The Texas/Texas Tech game is on FX. They have a couple of second-stringers who are trying to spice up the broadcast by being extra emotional about everything. Jeez guys, just call the game, no major network is ever going to hire you guys.
cathyx
@Yutsano: Well then, at least the halftime show should be good.
Mr Stagger Lee
As an Ohio State fan, I expect never again to hear smack talk from Penn State fans about jerseys and tattoos. Covering up on a coach who rapes 10 year old boys in locker rooms? C’MON MAN!!
Mr Stagger Lee
@Mr Stagger Lee: I forgot JoePa did report it, but the AD covered it up.
Gordon, The Big Express Engine
Go UVA!
Mark B.
@Zandar: Zandar, as ‘new guy’, you should almost expect to be stepped on.
That kind of reminds me of the mandatory sexual harassment training we had to get where I work a few years ago. Part of the training was having to watch a video, where one of the characters was ‘new guy’. One of the lines was “Hey New Guy, want to go check out the Laaaaaaydddiiiiies!!!” It was hilariously bad, with terrible acting. For a while, it became traditional to repeat that line to any new male employee when we invited them to lunch on their first day on the job. But perhaps Cain should have watched the video.
JPL
@Mr Stagger Lee: That one is hard to believe. Sickening.
The Dangerman
Jon Gruden is doing the game with his twin?
Great coach, but shitty announcer. Still better than Miller, I guess.
arguingwithsignposts
@Mark B.: None of the FPs read this blog anyway.
khead
Sandusky? Wow.
S. cerevisiae
@J. Michael Neal: Everyone has been crowing about all the shutouts by the Gophers, but they should recall that my Bulldogs put up 8 goals in two games against them even though they got swept. They will want revenge at Mariucci.
Yutsano
@The Dangerman:
Talk about a low bar. I don’t think fleas could limbo under that.
S. cerevisiae
Speaking of Gophers, they are actually ahead of the Spartans right now. Expect a rain of frogs if this holds up.

In case anyone failed to notice: Iowa is walking all over Michigan. I’m giddy.
d. b. cooper
What’s wrong with Musberger?
He has a golden voice. I haven’t heard him say as many egregiously dumb things as most announcers say. He doesn’t eff up the calls. I don’t ask for anything more.
Go Gus Johnson!
khead
@d. b. cooper:
I’ve already warned folks here about blaspheming Uncle Brent.
The penance for such blasphemy should be having to suffer through every football game called by a combo of Craig James, Tim Green and Tony Siragusa.
PaulW
Any chance the Bulls can beat a Big East team this year? Sigh… (open weeping)
Raven (formerly stuckinred)
Insanely beautiful day between the hedges but at 49-3 at the half I had to walk on home.
Raven (formerly stuckinred)
@efgoldman: It’s
Among the University’s oldest and most lasting traditions is the school fight song, “Glory, Glory” which is sung to the tune of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” It was sung at games as early as the 1890s, but arranged in its present form by Georgia musician-composer Hugh Hodgson in 1915. There have been many Bulldog songs through the years and at least two collections dating back to 1909 have been published, but none have enjoyed more acceptance than “Glory, Glory.”
In addition, there is no one more revered by the Bulldog Nation than Larry Munson and he’s from Minnesota.
MikeJ
@efgoldman: They think it’s “Glory, Glory to Georgia”. Nobody’s had the heart to tell them the truth, and it’s kind of funny anyway.
different-church-lady
I know damn well Mike Lange doesn’t do football.
burnspbesq
I defy y’all to come up with a more egregiously offensive fight song than the original lyrics to the “W&L Swing.”
When Washington & Lee’s men fall in line,
We’re gonna win again another time,
For W&L I yell I yell I yell,
And for the University I yell I yell,
For we will fight fight fight for every yard,
Circle the ends and hit that line right hard,
And we will roll old Sweet Briar on the sod, YES BY GOD,
Rah! Rah! Rah!
Raven (formerly stuckinred)
@MikeJ: Glory Glory I sit a section away from the bugler.
Yutsano
@burnspbesq: Notquite offensive, but the lyrics to Washington’s fight song are quirkily anachronistic. “Cross the Dardanelles?”
@arguingwithsignposts: Good question. I have no idea.
arguingwithsignposts
Just out of curiosity, where is cornered stoned? Hasn’t been around raving about the ‘Cocks recently. was he banned?
khead
@efgoldman:
I’m warning you… don’t force me to add Brian Billick to the mix….
Raven (formerly stuckinred)
@efgoldman: I wish they had, I’d rather play Michigan next week with them coming of a win than a loss.
Linnaeus
Argh. My Wolverines couldn’t pull off the score.
Linnaeus
Although I think they actually did pull it off on that 3rd down catch by Hemingway.
burnspbesq
Miami goes 78 yards in five plays off the opening kickoff. It’s obvious that Duke’s defense just isn’t fast enough. Could be a long day.
Gordon, The Big Express Engine
@Mark B.: You must be joking. They have Gus Johnson doing the broadcast. He is one of the best. (I assume you are kidding)
JPL
uhoh, Is the blog boss drinking yet? It doesn’t look good for W Virginia.
Moonbatting Average
So Iowa wins. “FAIL TO THE VICTORS VALIANT?”
Amir Khalid
Liverpool drew without scoring at home to Swansea. Feh. The defense is settling in decently well; but the strikers, particularly that new boy Carroll, need to learn where the goal is.
Raven (formerly stuckinred)
@Gordon, The Big Express Engine: NOBODY is worse than that woman they have on ESPN, NOBODY.

@Anonymous At Work: yeah when are you guys gonna seriously prosecute some banksters?
Yutsano
@piratedan: Yer evil dude. Funny, but evil.
And someone keep a watch on the Twitters. Methinks JC is about to kill his liver.
Mark B.
@Gordon, The Big Express Engine: One of my big pet peeves is happy talk when a game is a completely one-sided affair, so I kind of disliked the announcing, even though I was enjoying the game as a Texas fan. And one of the announcers reminded me of the guy who announces for the Spurs and says ‘Ohhh Mama’ after every big play by the Spurs. Is that Joel Myers? Very annoying. Anyway, I just quickly tired of the overly wrought cheerleading, but YMMV.

@burnspbesq: Sweet Briar is an all woman college, no?
J. Michael Neal
@Raven (formerly stuckinred): Someone needs to start singing it as “John Brown’s Body”.
burnspbesq
@Omnes Omnibus:
This is true.
I dare you to look up the nickname of the Sweet Briar athletic teams.
burnspbesq
It almost certainly won’t last, but stop for a moment and savor the consternation of the Bugeaters’ fans as they trail Northwestern.
Omnes Omnibus
@burnspbesq: It fits with the horsey image of the school.

burnspbesq
@piratedan:
Thanks. The only way Duke wins the championship this year is if Kendall Marshall gets hurt and can’t play in the NCAA tournament. Gaddam Tar Heels really are all that this year.
There is supposedly a very funny video on wral.com (I haven’t been able to find it) of Carolina forward John Henson trying to sneak into Cameron unnoticed to watch his sister, who is a freshman on the Duke women’s team.
Yutsano
@burnspbesq:
That musta hurt. Round of Laphroaig?
piratedan
well I have to admit, after AZ’s trip thru the tourney last year expectations are high at Zona, thankfully they lost an exhibition which is all Miller needs to get the kids attention. Doubt they’ll be as good as last year (after all, Williams is gone) but they’ll play hard and be more of a team. Plus, next year’s recruiting haul looks absolutely wicked.
burnspbesq
@Yutsano:
Actually, it didn’t. Duke fans take the rivalry seriously, but the hate is mostly on the Carolina side. Comes from having to see a Duke grad’s signature on your paycheck twice a month. ;-)
Raven (formerly stuckinred)
Meanwhile Texas Tech beats the Horns!
Yutsano
@burnspbesq: That made me giggle for no good reason.
Oh and meant to tell you: the lesbyterian lawyer is abandoning me. She got a position in CIS and is moving to NYC.

Heels got shut out after interim/dead duck coach popped off at the mouth. Taking for fracking ever for the Bama-LSU game to get here. Panthers got a bye. I need a drink or 5.
Yutsano
@Ben Cisco (mobile): Pacem emissary. The time will arrive and all will be well.

Does she understand that the definition of “genteel poverty” is living in NYC on a GS-14 salary?
Yutsano
@burnspbesq: She won’t be a one-income household and her office is in Queens. I think she’ll end up living further upstate. Her other half got a job offer there too but if it doesn’t pan out her current employer offered to transfer her.

@efgoldman: Sherman didn’t come through Athens. There was some interest in coming to Athens because the Cook Bros. Armory was here, but it was more important to hit places like Atlanta (bigger railroad hub) and Milledgeville (the capital at the time).
Auburn also uses Battle Hymn as one of their fight songs; it sounds better when the Redcoats play it, though.
ETA: my first thought was John was watching a game called by Andre Ware, or maybe Craig James. James was stinking up the Oklahoma game instead.

My Hilltoppers won another game in a walkoff.
They have won 5 in a row, two in overtime and today
on a last second field goal. The irony of that is
their placekicking game is terrible. They have used
three kickers and are a combined 4 of 15 on field goals for the year, but have won twice on game ending fgs.
Also, pull for LSU over ‘Bama. WKU plays LSU next week.
If the Tigers lose tonight, the final could be 70-0. If they beat the Tide, it might be only 52-7.
Raven (formerly stuckinred)
@jake the snake: and it “might” be 3-0 either way.
Raven (formerly stuckinred)
