Alright, screw this. I slept in until 8 this morning, then had a nap from 5-6, worked out on the $400 towel rack (the exercise bike) for an hour, and then had a coffee at 9. I lost my buzz cooking for everyone, and am now hopelessly awake. Sooooo. Let’s play some music. Here’s what I want you to do. I’m going to create two categories for you- SONGS I LOVE and GAY ANTHEMS. Put a link to either a song you love or a gay anthem in the comments. This will help me make playlists and will be entertaining. I’ll start. Here are two songs I absolutely love:

Here are two songs I would consider gay anthems (and as such, fucking awesome late night music):

Have fun. I’m excited to see what you have to add.

Gay anthem: Bronski Beat, “Smalltown Boy.”

Song I love: the Doors, “Break on Through (to the Other Side).” Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger were in D.C. this week with their “Is it the Doors or a Doors cover band?” configuration, and some people told me they were really good.

Possible gay anthem (or is that “ambiguously gay” anthem?): the Cure, “Boys Don’t Cry.”

Song I love: Dwight Yoakam and Buck Owens, “Streets of Bakersfield.” For some reason I woke up with this in my head this morning.

Pretty sure this is a gay anthem- Dead or Alive, “You Spin Me Round”:

“Build This Wall” is hardly representative of my taste in general, but it’s a fantastic song from the game Bastion:

@Steeplejack: Smalltown Boy is an amazing song in its own right. I love it. The video is even more amazing. This is a song that means something.

John: I don’t think “Killer Queen” would be a gay anthem though. Great song, but I think a lot of gay people would know the song, but wouldn’t think much of it.

40+ gay people consider “Smalltown Boy” to be part of their lives. I expect.

I’m sorry. “Relax” is NOT a gay anthem. It’s a song straight people heard once in a gay bar, thought that was cool, and started listening to because they wrongly thought gay people thought it was awesome and, therefore. acceptably cool.

I’ve fallen out of the habit the last few years, most of my cds are all boxed up with my books, and without the space to put the collection the impulse to go find new stuff has atrophied a bit. I do appreciate that you also ask questions like “whatever happened to the Screaming Trees” sometimes (I still really enjoy Dust). My tastes started with the ‘grunge’ thing and pretty well exhausted it. Hell, I still listen to the Melvins a few times a year when the mood strikes me and nobody is around to complain about it.

One other thing to mention while we’re in a music mood. A few weeks back there was a playing of that famous Nirvana concert at the Paramount in Seattle at movie theaters. I went to see it because I’d never been able to see them live, and thought the Reading DVD was a little disappointing. Man, on the big screen with those speakers, it blew me away. I frequently dislike movie theater speakers because the audio mix is always too heavy on effects and music and it drowns out the dialogue. But for a rock concert? Awesome. If theaters need more stuff to put on their screens, some famous old music concerts recorded on quality equipment would be one way to go, at least in places with enough people to draw from that seats would fill.

    Songs I Love:

    Polyester Bride — Liz Phair

    Kool Thing — Sonic Youth

If this ain’t a gay anthem, it should be: Magnetic Fields — When My Boy Walks Down The Street

Grand pianos crash together when my boy walks down the street
There are whole new kinds of weather when he walks with his new beat
Everyone sings hallelujah when my boy walks down the street
Life just kind of dances through ya from your smile down to your feet
Amazing he’s a whole new form of life
Blue eyes blazing and he’s going to be my wife

I’m sorry. “Relax” is NOT a gay anthem. It’s a song straight people heard once in a gay bar, thought that was cool, and started listening to because they wrongly thought gay people thought it was awesome and, therefore. acceptably cool.

Gay Anthem: Machine – There But For The Grace Of God Go I (although I personally prefer both The Gories and Kid Creole versions)

Song I love: Hüsker Dü – Don’t Want To Know If You Are Lonely

If that song had been written by Bob Mould rather than Grant Hart would it be a gay anthem?

@Steple/JohnCole: I believe Sneakin Sally Thru The Alley was actually the Meters with Lowell George on guitar. Very cool that somebody out there knows it. One of the most underrated funk albums ever. And imo, the greatest funk drum groove ever. Kicks in at 1:52. For those who like this sort of thing (artists not usually identified with funk, gettin funky) there’s this. I had always heard that Herbie & the Headhunters were the backing band, but according to the album notes, they may be a myth. Anyways, serious get-down here.

    Songs I love:

    Planet Telex- Radiohead

Ballad of Big Nothing- Elliott Smith

    The Bones of You- Elbow

    When It Rains- Brad Mehldau

and as for finding a gay anthem, this always struck me as a good place to start.

Songs I not only love, but which get stuck in my head, playing over and over until I hide in the pantry & scream:

Joan Osborne: “What Becomes of the Broken Hearted” From the very, exceedingly fine documentary, Standing in the Shadows of Motown
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gA0GcXV2njY

Sheena Eason: “Morning Train” Oldie but goodie, I defy you to listen to it, then have it NOT go round and round in your head!

Why do I keep posting twice, posting twice?

I’m dating myself, but what the hell…the best listening has to be the whole soundtrack from “Standing in the Shadows of Motown” Check out Ben Harper’s (with the Funk Brothers): Heard it through the Grapevine:

I can’t believe that nobody’s mentioned “A Little Respect” by Erasure yet. “What religion or reason could make a man desert his lover.”

Upon the corpse of this thread:

Blake Shelton, “God Gave Me You” Has earned the right to be here five times over.
At the very beginning, Blake Shelton told the story to the announcer of the worst country countdown in history that he decided to record this song after he and Miranda Lambert had a fight and he heard the Dave Barnes version on the radio. It made him more willing to make peace. And he sings the hell out of it. “And I need you–Yeah!” Awesome, awesome, awesome. This song helped me break down and say to my husband, “I need you.”

For Bruce, Badlands This version is from 1978 and the sheer urgency is great. He hasn’t sung this song a thousand times yet.

The only thing I would dare put forward as a gay anthem was Neil Young’s “Philadelphia”. I was at an official Oscar watching party in Minneapolis when this was nominated and this was obviously of huge importance to the gay guys there. But that’s not the tone anyone in this thread’s looking for.

My favorite post ever. I have had a big shat-eating grin reading and checking out the links. AsiangrrlMN should get props for winning the gay anthem category. Even though I did love that song in its day!
