Alright, screw this. I slept in until 8 this morning, then had a nap from 5-6, worked out on the $400 towel rack (the exercise bike) for an hour, and then had a coffee at 9. I lost my buzz cooking for everyone, and am now hopelessly awake. Sooooo. Let’s play some music. Here’s what I want you to do. I’m going to create two categories for you- SONGS I LOVE and GAY ANTHEMS. Put a link to either a song you love or a gay anthem in the comments. This will help me make playlists and will be entertaining. I’ll start. Here are two songs I absolutely love:
Here are two songs I would consider gay anthems (and as such, fucking awesome late night music):
Have fun. I’m excited to see what you have to add.
Steeplejack
Gay anthem: Bronski Beat, “Smalltown Boy.”
Song I love: the Doors, “Break on Through (to the Other Side).” Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger were in D.C. this week with their “Is it the Doors or a Doors cover band?” configuration, and some people told me they were really good.
Triumph
Song I love, even though it makes me a dirty hipster scum:
Bon Iver, “Skinny Love” live on Jools Holland

Nemo_N
Not song but still:

Too tired to make pretty quotes.
@Steepman: How you be, Steepman?

Gay Anthem:
Make Me Smile, Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel
plus bonus Erasure cover version (to confirm status)
Steeplejack
Possible gay anthem (or is that “ambiguously gay” anthem?): the Cure, “Boys Don’t Cry.”
Song I love: Dwight Yoakam and Buck Owens, “Streets of Bakersfield.” For some reason I woke up with this in my head this morning.
Spiffy McBang
Pretty sure this is a gay anthem- Dead or Alive, “You Spin Me Round”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJv5qLsLYoo
“Build This Wall” is hardly representative of my taste in general, but it’s a fantastic song from the game Bastion:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8cELTdtw6U
Michael D.
@Steeplejack: Smalltown Boy is an amazing song in its own right. I love it. The video is even more amazing. This is a song that means something.
John: I don’t think “Killer Queen” would be a gay anthem though. Great song, but I think a lot of gay people would know the song, but wouldn’t think much of it.
40+ gay people consider “Smalltown Boy” to be part of their lives. I expect.
asiangrrlMN
Two songs I love, both dedicated to Steepman in a non-stalkery sorta way.

Well, I fell asleep at 7pm and just woke up, so I’m wide awake (or will be soon) too.
Gay Anthem: West End Girls — Pet Shop Boys
Song I Love (There’s so many, but let’s start with): Unsatisfied — The Replacements
.
Splitting Image
Song I love:

Gay anthem (which I also love, but don’t play as often):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyl5DlrsU90
Lysana
Song I love (and fuck any haters): Theory of a Deadman, “So Happy”
Gay anthem: The Weathergirls, “It’s Raining Men”
Bonus bisexual anthem (because I’m in that kind of mood): Ani DiFranco, “In or Out”
Steeplejack
Gay anthem: Matt Alber, “End of the World.”
Song I like–my favorite song of the 1980s, in fact: Tears for Fears, “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.”
Michael D.
I’m sorry. “Relax” is NOT a gay anthem. It’s a song straight people heard once in a gay bar, thought that was cool, and started listening to because they wrongly thought gay people thought it was awesome and, therefore. acceptably cool.
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: Hmmpf. Fine.
(Yes it’s a dupe now. No I don’t care.)
Nemo_N
@Yutsano
Daaaaaaaaammmmmmmn
asiangrrlMN
@Steeplejack: *In my best Glenn Close voice* Are you IGNORING ME?!?
@Yutsano: Oh, yeah, BAY-BEEEEEEE! That’s my song right there!
Lysana
@Michael D.: You don’t know the same gay people I know. Just saying.

I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’
Steeplejack
@asiangrrlMN:
Hey, girl. Here’s how I be.
I’m working on my brother’s unfamiliar laptop, so I don’t have all my usual mad skillz.
Glad you guys showed up. For a while I thought it was going to be just Cole and me.
JGabriel
Gay Anthem: Lola – The Kinks
Song I Love: The Whole of the Law — Yo La Tengo (Cover of The Only Ones)
.
Michael D.
@Steeplejack: Can’t say much about Matt Alber. First time I’ve heard of him. But I will be forever indebted to you for introducing me to this beautiful song! Love. It. I just spent the last few minutes mesmerized.
asiangrrlMN
@Steeplejack: Sorry you had to work late, but yay for dogsitting over the weekend! I’m about to do my NaNoWriMo thang, so if you see me back before 3 a.m. Central Whatever Time, plz kick my flat ass. kthxbai.
Ochotona Princeps
Gay anthem:
Hercules and Love Affair, “Blind”

Song I love:
Brian Eno, St. Elmo’s Fire:
Steeplejack
Actually, re thread title, my pants are off. I’m in a big, empty house with two dozing sighthounds and a toasty fire in the fireplace, and I came straight from work and didn’t bring a change of clothes, so I’m hangin’ out in me boxers.
Wait, that reminds me of the JoBoxers, “Just Got Lucky.” Possible gay anthem?
Suffern ACE
Gay anthem: Kim English, “Unspeakable Joy” http://youtu.be/Hd9T8uZxiLg
And because I am too emotionally shy to admit to loving anything publicly, Whitney sings “It’s not Right.” http://youtu.be/2VFzJLK51cs

Yutsano

Steeplejack
@asiangrrlMN:
I knew the Minogue would be deployed ASAP.
Steeplejack
@Michael D.:
Yeah, I love that song, and I almost always tear up when I watch the video. Just as a song, “Boys Don’t Cry” affects me almost as much.
Yutsano
@Steeplejack: The next logical step is Olivia. Natch.
Steeplejack
@asiangrrlMN:
Heh. They never, never, ever get old. And I haven’t heard either one in a while. Thanks.
I’ll throw back Michelle and Carlos, “Game of Love.”
MikeJ
Pure pop niceness from Matthew Sweet – Girlfriend.
Gay anthem? That’s for others and/or Yazoo to say. Don’t Go.
JGabriel
Gay Anthem: I Kissed A Girl — Jill Sobule
Song I Love: Horses In My Dreams — PJ Harvey
.
Steeplejack
Gay anthem: Dame Shirley Bassey, “Get This Party Started.”
JGabriel
Here’s a pair from Lou:
Gay Anthem: Walk On The Wild Side — Lou Reed
Song I Love: Sunday Morning — Velvet Underground
.
Suffern ACE
@Nemo_N: Mika’s song would be a gay anthem, but technically, it’s a “Don’t Label Me…I Hate Labels” anthem.

Steeplejack
Not a gay anthem, but it should have been: Cameo, “Candy.” Plus: codpiece! Win!
MikeJ
Lurve – Brinsley Schwarz – (What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace Love And Understanding
Anthemic – New Order – Blue Monday
Michael D.
Not sure if this qualifies, but EVERY gay bar that does karaoke has “Sweet Caroline” and everyone knows it.
Michael D.
So good! So good! So good!
Steeplejack
Song I love: Gordon Lightfoot, “Apology.”
Steeplejack
@Michael D.:
Glad you like his stuff. “End of the World” and that video are stupendous.
JGabriel
Gay Anthem: Closer To Fine — Indigo Girls
(Not necessarily a gay-themed song, but most of the lesbians I’ve known love it.)
Song I Love: The Golden Age — Beck
.
Suffern ACE
Song I Love: Willie Nelson sings ZZ top http://youtu.be/g1OntSF33dY
Not sure where it falls, but if you place it on your play list, you’ll get questions:
Jay Chou “Cowboy is Busy” http://youtu.be/DDMM-bP1wnA
Comrade Nimrod Humperdink
I don’t have a lot to contribute on the anthem front, but I have to give you props for pulling out ‘Army,’ that’s my favorite Folds song. I’ll toss in a little Meat Puppets and Led Zeppelin:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pNAJFNd8Lk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfR_HWMzgyc
Steeplejack
Jazz song I love: Yusef Lateef, “Love Theme from Spartacus.”
Steeplejack
@JGabriel:
Beck song I love: “Deadweight.”
Comrade Nimrod Humperdink
Not much to add on anthems, but I love ‘Army,’ my favorite Folds song. I’ll chip in with these:
Up On the Sun
Kashmir
Steeplejack
@Steeplejack:
Linky no work! I fix: Cameo, “Candy.”
Comrade Nimrod Humperdink
Ha, I finally figured out WordPress linking… I’m now a slightly smaller idiot. Yay me.
JGabriel
Songs I Love (I’ve kind of run out of gay anthems):
XTC — Summer’s Cauldron / Grass
Talking Heads — The Great Curve
Arcade Fire — Rebellion (Lies)
.
Steeplejack
Jazz song I love the most: Oliver Nelson’s “Stolen Moments.”
The original.
And my favorite version, by Ahmad Jamal, playing what sounds like a 30-foot Steinway.
And a hipster version by United Future Organization (UFO).
Heh, I have a mix CD of just versions of this song.
Yutsano
Interesting video. Great song.
freelancer (iPhone)
I swear I was scrolling down this post, going hmmm. Gay Anthems, Music I love, I should post Killer Queen, and then…you are awesome, JC. Shine on you crazy diamond.
Steeplejack
Song I would love to have played at my funeral: Jefferson Airplane, “Embryonic Journey.”
Steeplejack
@Comrade Nimrod Humperdink:
Well done, you Nimrod.
Steeplejack
@Yutsano:
Yeah, good song. I think that poster’s video choice is a bid to make it a gay anthem.
Steeplejack
Okay, I’m fading. This might be my last one: the Lovin’ Spoonful, “Coconut Grove.”
John Cole
@Comrade Nimrod Humperdink: I’ve listened to a lot of music in my day, and Ben Folds is in my top five for perfect fucking albums.
Comrade Nimrod Humperdink
@Steeplejack:
Thanks yo, and that Oliver Nelson song is tremendous
John Cole
BTW- Still in my will to be buried to Waiting For Columbus. In a Steelers jersey. Fuck you all for questioning my decision.
Yutsano
@Steeplejack: Heh. I have a minor crush on Kareem too. And yeah I get that sense. But a lot of the Stargate dynamic had a minor homoerotic undertone.
@John Cole: Fuck that. We’re burning you naked. :)
Steeplejack
Song I love with great horn section: Deirdre Wilson Tabac, “I Can’t Keep from Crying Sometimes.”
Comrade Nimrod Humperdink
@John Cole:
I’ve fallen out of the habit the last few years, most of my cds are all boxed up with my books, and without the space to put the collection the impulse to go find new stuff has atrophied a bit. I do appreciate that you also ask questions like “whatever happened to the Screaming Trees” sometimes (I still really enjoy Dust). My tastes started with the ‘grunge’ thing and pretty well exhausted it. Hell, I still listen to the Melvins a few times a year when the mood strikes me and nobody is around to complain about it.
Steeplejack
Final gay anthem: the Communards, “Don’t Leave Me This Way.”
Suffern ACE
@Yutsano:
It’s probably the only way to prevent a certain someone from shouting “Once again Wrong Again Cole…” during the ceremony.
JGabriel
Van Morrison — It’s All In The Game / You Know What They’re Writing About
Richard & Linda Thompson — Just The Motion
Alejandro Escovedo — Across The River
.
Comrade Nimrod Humperdink
One other thing to mention while we’re in a music mood. A few weeks back there was a playing of that famous Nirvana concert at the Paramount in Seattle at movie theaters. I went to see it because I’d never been able to see them live, and thought the Reading DVD was a little disappointing. Man, on the big screen with those speakers, it blew me away. I frequently dislike movie theater speakers because the audio mix is always too heavy on effects and music and it drowns out the dialogue. But for a rock concert? Awesome. If theaters need more stuff to put on their screens, some famous old music concerts recorded on quality equipment would be one way to go, at least in places with enough people to draw from that seats would fill.
Gozer
Gay Anthem – Anything by Scissor Sisters
Song I love – Cream: “Sitting On Top Of The World”
Steeplejack
@John Cole:
Whenever I think of Little Feat I am reminded of the great work they did on Robert Palmer’s first one or two albums. Don’t know if this song is one of their collaborations, but it is a song I love: “Every Kinda People.”
(Probably should have gone with “Spanish Moon,” but I love this song more.)
Steeplejack
@Suffern ACE:
LOL. Win.
Steeplejack
@JGabriel:
I was holding back Van Morrison’s “Redwood Tree,” because I could find only a demo version, but it is a song I love.
Steeplejack

I posted this link last nite, my favorite love song of all time. It’s not an anthem of any kind, but about the sweetness of love, true commitment and finding your soulmate, something that has always eluded me. Perhaps that’s why it makes me cry. Or perhaps just because it’s so beautiful. Or both.

Zeitgeist (later known as The Reivers)”Things Don’t Change” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-hczjSmvrQ&feature=related

Gay Anthem: Machine – There But For The Grace Of God Go I (although I personally prefer both The Gories and Kid Creole versions)
Song I love: Hüsker Dü – Don’t Want To Know If You Are Lonely
If that song had been written by Bob Mould rather than Grant Hart would it be a gay anthem?
HG Hay
COIL – Love’s Secret Domain. RIP Sleaze and Jhonn.

@Steple/JohnCole: I believe Sneakin Sally Thru The Alley was actually the Meters with Lowell George on guitar. Very cool that somebody out there knows it. One of the most underrated funk albums ever. And imo, the greatest funk drum groove ever. Kicks in at 1:52. For those who like this sort of thing (artists not usually identified with funk, gettin funky) there’s this. I had always heard that Herbie & the Headhunters were the backing band, but according to the album notes, they may be a myth. Anyways, serious get-down here.
Songs I love:
Planet Telex- Radiohead
Ballad of Big Nothing- Elliott Smith
The Bones of You- Elbow
When It Rains- Brad Mehldau
and as for finding a gay anthem, this always struck me as a good place to start.

I’m not sure that I understand what an ‘anthem’ is, but this song + video is so teh gay that I could not resist posting it:

What’s better than the Smiths during the 80s?

Songs I not only love, but which get stuck in my head, playing over and over until I hide in the pantry & scream:
Joan Osborne: “What Becomes of the Broken Hearted” From the very, exceedingly fine documentary, Standing in the Shadows of Motown
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gA0GcXV2njY
Sheena Eason: “Morning Train” Oldie but goodie, I defy you to listen to it, then have it NOT go round and round in your head!

Why do I keep posting twice, posting twice?
I’m dating myself, but what the hell…the best listening has to be the whole soundtrack from “Standing in the Shadows of Motown” Check out Ben Harper’s (with the Funk Brothers): Heard it through the Grapevine:

I can’t believe that nobody’s mentioned “A Little Respect” by Erasure yet. “What religion or reason could make a man desert his lover.”

Upon the corpse of this thread:
Blake Shelton, “God Gave Me You” Has earned the right to be here five times over.
At the very beginning, Blake Shelton told the story to the announcer of the worst country countdown in history that he decided to record this song after he and Miranda Lambert had a fight and he heard the Dave Barnes version on the radio. It made him more willing to make peace. And he sings the hell out of it. “And I need you–Yeah!” Awesome, awesome, awesome. This song helped me break down and say to my husband, “I need you.”
For Bruce, Badlands This version is from 1978 and the sheer urgency is great. He hasn’t sung this song a thousand times yet.

The only thing I would dare put forward as a gay anthem was Neil Young’s “Philadelphia”. I was at an official Oscar watching party in Minneapolis when this was nominated and this was obviously of huge importance to the gay guys there. But that’s not the tone anyone in this thread’s looking for.

And here’s Bruce singing a song he’s sung for forty years

My favorite post ever. I have had a big shat-eating grin reading and checking out the links. AsiangrrlMN should get props for winning the gay anthem category. Even though I did love that song in its day!
