Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When the time comes to make an endorsement, the pain of NYT editors will be palpable as they reluctantly whisper “Biden.”

Another missed opportunity for Jamie Dimon to just shut the fuck up.

Never forget that he train is barreling down on Trump, even as he dances on the tracks.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

I was confident that someone would point it out and thought why not me.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Shut up, hissy kitty!

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

How can republicans represent us when they don’t trust women?

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

A consequence of cucumbers

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

The lights are all blinking red.

Please don’t feed the bears.

“That’s what the insurrection act is for!”

I can’t give it away on Seventh Avenue

Commenter h proposes Puffy’s Tavern or Walker’s restaurant in Tribeca for next Sunday’s Balloon Juice Ideas Festival. About half a dozen of you expressed interest in dropping by. Any votes on which of the two places people would like to go? They both sound good and are both near OWS. I am thinking of 4 pm on Sunday.

(I know it’s called Varick Street, not Seventh Avenue, down there.)

    I’d try to stop by.

Also, it’d be cool to meet Corey. He’s gonna be my guest on December 1st at Virtually Speaking.

Cool. If I’m sure we have at least a few people coming by, I’ll see if Corey Robins wants to come by too.

I would really like to go if only to get back to Walkers. That place is great and if you all don’t go there you are missing out.

OK, I’m checking flights just in case there’s something super cheap.

Cole is paying the bar tab, right?

I think it should be Puffy’s Tavern just because I like the name.

4 p.m., eh? Maybe I’ll be back in town.

Also, in the comments to the post in which this event was first proposed, there is a reference to the “origin” of the phrase, “Also, too.” Of which I was not aware (apparently not being aware of quite all internet traditions). Where did it come from?

Well shit, I’ll be getting drunk with my roommates and friends in a cabin over at Lake Wallenpaupak, PA or else I would love to attend.

At least now I have another bar to add to my list of spots to visit, Walkers seems like my kind of digs. Hope everyone has a good time and sorry I can’t go.

One more chair please, for what’s shaping up to be a rather large table. I’m looking forward to putting faces to words.

Puffy’s and Walker’s are both superb, proud redoubts in a city becoming ever more homogenized or expense-accounted. I should advise that Puffy’s stops serving food, other than fried snacks, after 5:00pm on weekends. So if people wish to have dinner and to argue properly with their mouths full, Walker’s may be the better choice.

Damn. I’m somewhere in CT as I write this, heading for a quick stop in NYC tonight. (Talking Newton at the MIT club, if any BJers are thus old-school-tie-ish).

Puffy’s was my default bar in 1982-4; never thought it would have survived this long. My apex as a darts player (a very local maximum) came there, though there was a reproducible curve of fail as the beer/hour process took its toll.

Sorry to miss everyone. I’ll go be nostalgic all on my own now.

    Where did it come from?

    The gibberish of Sarah Palin.

Edited To Add: The Palin-Couric interview is where I remember Palin first using it, though she used it on other occasions too.
