Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

I really should read my own blog.

The willow is too close to the house.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

This really is a full service blog.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

I wonder if trump will be tried as an adult.

Innocent people don’t delay justice.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Don’t expect peaches from an apple tree.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Reality Check is really the perfect troll though he will have his work cut out for him trying to spin away last night’s results. Also, RC dislikes Tom Friedman as much as the rest of us so he’s not all bad. I hope he shows up soon with the GOP’s new salve for the butt-hurt talking points.

The sad truth is, had Obama been more proactive none of this would have been necessary in Ohio. By leaving important issues to state voters, Obama has abdicated his role as the leader of the federal government. Moreover, had Obama been more proactive in defending immigration, there would have been no Arizona immigration bill and no need for voters to democratically eject a politician from office. Finally, had Obama’s DEA been aggressively policing prescription drug abuses by physicians, Michael would still be with us today. A traitor to his people; a traitor to democracy; a traitor to America. Worse than Bush, Indeed.

I don’t know about the rest of you but I am finding today’s developments in Europe to be highly alarming. Italy might be too big to fail but that is not stopping it from failing regardless. So much for the Europeans being smarter than us; I guess incompetence and ineptitude are universal traits these days.

@beltane: Greed, for lack of a better word…..the EU was designed to make money flows easier and cheaper. It did. One of the added “benefits” of less structural resistance to capital flows is greater volatility. So, even if you have stronger regulatory safeguards separating banking from investing (Europe still smarter), that does not mean that you are guaranteed stability when the money-flow decisions are made based on profit alone (Europe = America).

For years, the IMF/World Bank elite (i.e., the Washington Consensus) have sought to eliminate the barriers to capital flows in the developing nations as a condition of relief. The record is clear: those that maintained some capital controls have suffered shorter troughs when times got tough. Moreover, the capital controls were not only viewed as impediments to capital, but a sign of weak and impoverished economic thinking. Just read the “New” Stiglitz as compared to the “Old” Stiglitz.

    This made me laugh.

People can smell a sh*t sammich at 100 yards. No surprise there.

What wouldn’t totally surprise me (though I acknowledge it’s a stretch/paranoid) would be the Koch bros manipulating the Italian bond market today. It’s a two-fer: 1) gets the US media to barely notice the Koch’s really bad, very no good, no fun news cycle, and 2) continues to push the highly discredited but still wingeratti popular austerity-for-all-you-plebes theme.

They won’t though, because the Germans would rather see the entire continent burn than even consider the slightest hint of inflation. They might as well be on the gold standard for as much good as the ECB has done.

And the people benefiting from the bailouts are the people who bought Greek/Italian/Spanish bonds. A straight up bailout would just be a backdoor bailout of the French and German banks, same as the AIG cash ended up going to Goldman (and others).
