Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

So many bastards, so little time.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

In my day, never was longer.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

This blog will pay for itself.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

People are weird.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

I really should read my own blog.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

    Who should I root for?

I tend to root for the underdog in most competition, so who should I root for in this game?

Kicking back with a cocktail getting ready to watch Fringe. Trying to not be too pissed at myself. Went for the cataract surgery Wed and got rejected (rightly so) because of this crappy cold. You’re heavily sedated for the surgery, but not completely out, and as the anesthesiologist said, “You don’t want a surgeon with instruments in your eye when you can’t help but cough”. I guess a couple more weeks won’t hurt since it’s been over a year. /end whining

Me? I just turned off the T.V. while watching Jim Lehrer show me why he is such a large part of what’s wrong with the discourse in this country. Along with those two useless sacks of shit Mark and David they were fearfully asking what if the occupy movement turns violent, as though they were completly unaware of the violence already being meted out by police. As though they were unaware that everyone involved with the occupy movement has been trained in non violent civil dis obedience. This fucking country is toast if we can’t get these useless jackwagons of the tube.

Actually I have a request for any Balloon Juicers – Richard Roberts (Frankensteinbeck) and I have short stories in an upcoming charity anthology (along with writers like Harlan Ellison and Alan Dean Foster) to benefit the Center for Missing and Exploited Children. We’re looking for readers to get an advanced copy of the manuscript in exchange for writing a review on Amazon the day the book comes out in Kindle. (Between Thanksgiving and the first week of December). If anyone is interested you can contact me through my website or at the Kindle All Stars site.

It’s a really good collection of short stories (mostly speculative fiction) from writers all over the world. And it’s for a great cause.

Producers of Atlas Shrugged, The Movie, Pt. 1 stop DVD production to correct embarrassing copy error on back of packaging:

Arriving just in time for the season of giving all the leeches in your life the fruits of your autonomous production, Atlas Shrugged Part 1 has at last made its way to DVD and Blu-ray, where its messages about Objectivism can be enjoyed by the whole family, some of whom should be ashamed. But if you’ve already picked up a copy, maybe don’t read the back cover, or else you’ll be inundated with a lie (and as everyone knows, lies force you to become the world’s slave). Fortunately, most Ayn Rand fans don’t generally like to read, but if they make an exception this time, they’ll find their DVD emblazoned with a text trumpeting, “Ayn Rand’s timeless novel of courage and self-sacrifice comes to life…” And of course, as anyone familiar with the book or Rand’s philosophy knows, “self-sacrifice” is the exact opposite of what Atlas Shrugged is all about …

Yes, it’s true. They stopped production to correct “self-sacrifice” and change the back copy to: “Ayn Rand’s timeless novel of courage and rational self-interest comes to life…”

    I shit you not.

Had a job interview at a company I really want to work at. The interview went well but I don’t think I have the exact skill set they want.

The sad part about that is I was promised that my current job would have given me those skills, but when I got there it turns out they lied. So I am screwed twice, have to keep a job that was presented under false pretenses & not getting the increased skills I need to get the job I really want.

@lamh35: I was on this little artillery “compound” in Korea. They played Reveille, retreat and taps every day via a record and an ancient PA system like on MASH. If you got caught outside you had to turn and salute in the direction of the flag. You could hear them turn on the record player and guys would dive for the doors of the quonset huts so they didn’t have to do it. It was a great game and the lifers got really pissed if they caught you.

When those sailors furled the flag it look exactly the way I was taught to take down a spinnaker. Same reason I’m sure, you don’t want the wind catching light weight material and going over (and slowing down the boat in the case of the spinnaker, being disrespectful for the flag).

Of course we never neatly folded sails until the boat was tied up, and never into a triangle like a flag.

@The Dangerman: UNC coming out flat/nervous, and getting beat on the boards, doesn’t make Izzo a better coach. UNC made some adjustments, and started to take control.

As for players, Izzo gets plenty.

Williams took some mediocre teams to the Final Four during his early years at Kansas. Regardless, good players consistently willing to sign with a coach(absent cheating) is the result of said coach’s ability to win and/or develop players. In other words, it is a validation of their coaching.

Taking the night off from politics meself, JC. I’ve got two tiny pumpkins left over from Halloween that I really want to launch off the balcony of my eighth floor apartment, but I’m 44 and kind of like my neighbors enough not to do it.
Secondarily, I’ve got two empty glass wine bottles and thought of stuffing each with a message and throwing them into Sandy Hook Bay here in my little Jersey Sure town. One would read, “I’m a celebrity, get me out of here!” the other would contain the lyrics of Thunder Road. It’s not exactly Shelley throwing copies Thomas Paine’s the Rights of Man into the Irish Sea, but it could be a start. What message would you all put in a bottle?

These videos are probably the best I’ve seen so far on sports radio and sports tv when discussing this mess since everything blew up.

I hope ya’ll check it out.

More On Penn State and Jerry Sandusky

I think Jon Ritchie really helps, again, with the question of “Why?” Most interesting is toward end, where Ritchie–contra all the “If I hadda had my gun” braggadocio–explains why he might not have been able to intervene. It’s interesting seeing this, as I was just telling Kenyatta, this morning, that I can’t even say what I would have done, in that moment.

None of the alleviates responsibility. The attempt to understand why is not the same as the attempt to excuse. McQueary had a moral responsibility to protect that kid. He did not. Taking that as given, I am still interested in the “Why?”

It’s also interesting to see Skip Bayless actually play journalist, if only for a second, instead of the character he’s become…

Little more from Ritchie who says the game shouldn’t even been played tomorrow–“I don’t think football matters anymore when you have victims of rape….We don’t even know what happened to that ten-year old victim. Where is he??”

But even if it isn’t as accurate as I’d like, I would still support it, because I just make it a point of trying to support Black films whenever I can. Money talks in Hollyweird, so big box office for films like this can lead to more mainstream minority projects.

@Southern Beale: You mean they decided to hit on the day that just about everyone knew the president was at a public appearance in California? What a bunch a fuckups.

@Lojasmo: The RN program at a community college here in Austin. Both of the hospital chains here have 12 hour shifts for their nurses. I think the point is to get us ready for that when we graduate. Also- the day is organized around the two twelve hour shifts, so it lets us see a good chunk of what an actual day is like.

    @Sentient Puddle:

Word is that if you install it to your hard drive, the game still thinks it needs to look on the disc for the textures, and in failing to load them, pukes up some pretty low-res stuff.

They say it’s a caching issue. And it’s exacerbated by playing other games (which would explain why I haven’t seen it, even though I HD installed– I haven’t played anything else since this morning). Maybe they didn’t test that particular mix.

I just won’t play anything else until the patch. So far so good. And this is def. one of those ‘game of the decade’ moments, bugs and all.

Now back up to the DC gunfire thread… wtf?

Also, unlike some other people’s names I could reel off, Michael Moore didn’t inherit his 1% status. He actually worked for it if he’s actually got it.

If I had millions to start with, I’d be like Donald Trump, but with much better hair.

Also, you wouldn’t see me putting my name up on buildings to compensate for my below average equipment.

That is a long-ass clinical. I graduated from a CC in 1995. I think our clinicals were six hours, tops.

@Southern Beale: Agreed. Tweety owned him. So did Ellison when he could get a word in. Sad Sully. Maher nailed his game plan pretty early on, “You’re trying too hard to be conservative.” Pretty good show tonight to wrap up a generally weak season, which was really disappointing given how much they had to work with this year.

Been lurking for years, but figured I’d finally drop a comment down in honor of Skyrim Day. Managed to pick up my copy at the midnight release, and take most of today off to play. I think my vicious Khajiit would make Tunch proud.

Spendin’ the evening drinking Meyers’s rum, petting a cat and watching Fringe. Except for a rather nasty cough, life here on the Left Coast is pretty damned good.

@SiubhanDuinne: Further, I don’t really subscribe to the idea that you can only complain about wealth distribution in our country if your totally destitute. That’s completely asinine. You can be a winner in this system and still recognize that your pay out is bigger than it ought to be and that runners up are being paid less than they ought to be.
