Commentor David N. forwards a bleg from his friend Susan:
Yesterday afternoon someone drove by my cul de sac and dropped off two dogs in the middle of the street and sped away. I caught them and they are in my back yard.

Elvis is not thrilled to have company in his domain and is trying to be a good sport. They are also not “cat fans.” They hiss at Matisse, Diego and Monty through the screen door.
__
They look like chihuahua terrier mixed dogs. Very sweet dispositions. The male has not been neutered. Don’t know about the female.
__
Have named them Romeo and Juliet, as they have been literally kicked to the curb by their family. I would like to find a good foster home/or place them together. Juliet is blond and Romero is a black tuxedo heartbreaker.
If you’ve got any suggestions — even for rescue groups in the area — leave a comment, or email me at [email protected] (click my name near the top of the right-hand column). Anybody here dealt with the Chihuahua Rescue & Transport people?

What beautiful animals and hopefully they find a happy home.
Elizabelle
Beautiful dogs. Wish I could take them; Juliet’s winsome. Kudos to Susan and David for rescuing them.
Maybe try Long Beach’s Hearts for Hounds? They take adoptable dogs to the farmer’s market every Sunday. (For permanent homes, not ragout ingredients.)

Hope they can stay together.

Dogs are the best people in the world. Both of mine are rescues. I can’t count the number of time that either my wife or myself has expressed our happiness that they are part of our family now. They are constant, trust worthy companions to our children who learn about love from them. We’ve had Vespa for 9 years and Hope came to us about 4 years ago. Somebody really lost out on a devoted, unwavering, and endlessly loyal friend in each of them. If you are a person considering adopting Romeo and Juliette, I can assure you that you will gain MUCH more than you give in bringing dogs into your life. (Plus, rescuing dogs is the right thing to do.)

They’re Rat Terriers. I already have one – they’re a handful, individually, but dropping them off in the street? If I were closer I’d consider a blended family.
Now I’m going to make a sad face and hug my little buddy, Chachi.
Nom de Plume
Good. Now call the cops on them, but first beat the shit out of them for abandoning their dogs.

The top one looks a lot like Lily, right down to the long ladylike toes.

Too bad they didn’t get the license plate number… though I don’t know what good it would do, officially.
Being a heartless a-hole is still legal.
Good luck to them! Check Rat Terrier Rescue for some leads, and maybe put up a post?
WereBear
@WereBear: I meant “a post on the rat terrier site” and the local shelter will let you Petfinder them, too, while being “fostered” in a home.

So, so cute. Good luck finding them a home.

Arrrrggg….
I have taken in so many dogs temporarily. Back when we lived in an apartment, our parking lot was like a stray dog and kitty magnet. It’s not as bad out here in the country.
It’s so hard not to try and take them in for one night when its cold and they are skin and bones, but then I feel like I’m the one abandoning them if I don’t find them a home after that.
We’ve had to take a number of them to the humane society knowing that they just turn over anything they consider a “stray” to animal control. They kind of stop believing the whole “Our neighbors moved out of state yesterday and left their dog so he’s not really a stray….” after about the fifth time.
So hard. I saw a stray that was just skin and bones a couple of days ago as I was pulling out of our neighborhood. I called at him through the window and he looked at me all happy and expectantly, but he bolted when I opened my car door. Made me cry thinking about what a fundamentally good, innocent being he was and that I couldn’t help him.

I think I know the people involved in CRT from college and subsequent reunions. It is my impression that they are good and compassionate people.

There are a number of animal rescue orgs in the LA area, all you need to do is Google. My beloved Jenny, now deceased, came from Pet Rescue in Tujunga, which is pretty far from Long Beach but a very reliable group.

Yeah, I see the resemblance… and thank you, and the other FP’ers and the commentariat for making this blog a place where dog and cat blegs make sense. I am really glad I found this place!
These dogs look a lot like Juno to me – so if anyone is on the fence about adopting them, you should know that Juno is a non-stop fountain of love and fun, very affectionate, but still doesn’t constantly demand “amuse me! amuse me NOW!” She really is a fantastic pet and companion, and I am sure these two would be also. Being a pair, they would probably amuse and distract each other a good bit of the time.
Thank you again, Anne Laurie!

@Elizabelle:
Minor quibble, but in the interest of credit where credit is (or isn’t) due, I had nothing to do with rescuing them – I live about half an hour away – Susan sent me an email after she rescued them. My big contribution was requesting this post from Anne Laurie.
And I too really hope they get adopted together.

… and now I am off to walk my pups, and be happy I have them, and think bad thoughts about people who abandon dogs…

I live in Long Beach, and I also drive as far as the SFValley for work, and let me tell you, in the last couple of years, from really just after the bad times hit, I started noticing dogs of this size and type running stray almost everywhere you looked. Usually solid light brown, but they were almost all that size and type, the face, the tail. Dozens of them. As if some puppy mill ran out of money and started releasing them one by one in various places.

Jesus. WTF.
I’ll just assume it was someone in economic distress on their way to jump off a bridge, with no time for an actual plan.

I am so touched by all the responses regarding Romeo and Juliet. I am the lady who caught them. Glad to know they are rat terriers. That helps. I contacted 12 rescue groups. These two are like Joseph and Mary: there is no more room at the inn. Everyone is plum full due to the dire economic straits of these most interesting times.
I found a place in LB that will spay and neuter inexpensively, Golden State. Perhaps that will make someone more apt to take a leap of faith and open their arms to these two dilettantes. They are unbelievably entertaining. Jumping in concert, performing their ballet on two hind legs and chasing my poor beagle/basset mix Elvis round and round.
Actually went to farmers market at Los Alamitos Bay to seek out Hearts to Hounds, but alas, they left early today, rats. So I missed them. Will try to contact her on the web. If only I didn’t have four furries already in residence. My husband has the patience of Job, but we both agree we cannot afford two more as I am unemployed at the moment.
Will try the other suggestions in these posts.
I thank you one and all for your comments and suggestions.
Best Regards,
Susan C.

Glad you found a low-cost spay/neuter program near you. Getting them fixed will definitely make them more adoptable, so that’s a good investment. Have you tried Ratbone Rescues rat terrier rescue?
Btw just for future reference, the Humane Alliance has a widget where you put in your zip code, and it gives you a list of local low-cost spay-neuter programs. Dunno if John would go for this, but you can install the widget onto any website.
But anyway, I tried it with a Long Beach zip code and it returned a whole bunch of programs, including the one you mentioned. Best of luck to you and the sweet doggies!

Not sure if anyone is still monitoring this thread so I’ve also emailed this to Anne Laurie. The logistics may be impossible to work out but if we can figure out a way to get these two to NC (I’m just north of Charlotte), I will give them a good home.
Liz
@merrinc-My dog was shipped from Arkansas to New Hampshire after I found him on Petfinder. Perhaps you can check that site for transport options?? I really hope you can get them!
