Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

If West Virginia and San Francisco had a love child.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Donald Trump, welcome to your everything, everywhere, all at once.

The rest of the comments were smacking Boebert like she was a piñata.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

No Justins, No Peace

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

How can republicans represent us when they don’t trust women?

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Come on, man.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

I was promised a recession.

He really is that stupid.

This fight is for everything.

From Can’t Explain (who does all of these, not me)…..

Janet Jackson, “When I Think of You” (1986)
Given the long-simmering rivalry between Prince and Michael Jackson, I always used to wonder what it meant when producers/funk savants Terry Lewis & Jimmy Jam broke away from one of Prince’s biggest pet projects, the Time, and made their own project of turning Michael’s little sister into a superstar. Also too, given that rivalry, I wonder why Michael Jackson named not one but two of his kids “Prince.” Well, anyway, the good news is that whatever problems existed between those two never amounted to an “either/or” choice for the rest of us, but rather a “both/and”—nothing stopping anyone from loving both Control and Parade, both Sign O’ the Times and Rhythm Nation 1914. “When I Think of You,” a Flyte Tyme production, was Janet Jackson’s first #1, and still one of my favorites by her.

Can’t get enough of the Flyte Tyme sound:
SOS Band, “Tell Me If You Still Care”
Alexander O’Neal, “A Broken Heart Can Mend”
More at Can’t Explain.

Wasn’t one of Michael’s nicknames prince of pop? Or was it king of pop?

IIRC, The Time was actually Alexander O’Neal’s band before Prince took them away. Some people I worked with in Mpls were kind of pissed that Prince messed with Flyte Time.

    @harlana:

Hang on. We’re in the midst of a paradigm shift in consciousness – like birth pangs – and not everyone is going to survive the convulsions. The hive mind is recalibrating human intelligence and it’s just going to take some more dying off of the slow-to-adapt members of the herd. Sorry red staters.

    I love me some Janet.

BTW, if you want to start a gripping conversation in your neighborhood Black barbershop, go ahead and ask ’em MJ or Prince. Besides the usual, questions like “back in the day who would have thought that MJ would become a bigger freak than Prince? The rest of the discussion would be very interesting.

I love all the early Janet stuff, but this one was on loop in my cassette player (remember those…lol) .

Janet Jackson – Let’s Wait Awhile

Mainly because I was the age where most teenaged girls are thinking about more “adult” things if you know what I mean…lol.

Sweetest song about virginity and first love ever, IMHO. Funny enough, Janet was already NOT a virgin, she was secretly married to one of the members of Debarge!

Oh, I have always loved that video, and haven’t seen it in years. Thanks, DougJ!

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the entire video a long take?

I’m an R&B girl all the way, and I love me some Pop R&B and Janet J was the biggest during her heyday.

But I was raised on R&B quiet storm classics, so even though I”m only 35, that’s where my musical heart lies. It’s want overpopulates my Ipod music files and it’s what I play when I need to unwind.

Totally unrelated, but maybe not that much, but there have been a number of articles lately about AA love, marriage, dating, etc and many of them suggest that Black women should date outside of their race more often … my response has always been…”find me a white/latino/arab/asia/whatever other raced-dude who loves Frankie Beverly & Maze as much as we do in NOLA and I’m all in”…lol

Maze & Frankie Beverly “Happy Feelins” Live in New Orleans

Frankie Beverly & Maze are an INSTITUTION in New Orleans. As anyone (especially an AA) from New Orleans if the love of Frankie Beverly & Maze would be a deal-breaker and I betcha they will pause to think about it..lol

OT, but I really hope that this guy was also BJ’s troll:

St. Petersburg Times has discovered that one of the more frothing racist loons littering the comments section on its news articles with vulgar diatribes is — GASP — an elected Republican officeholder!….technically this is “newsworthy” because in addition to the bucketfuls of hateful slop that this Pinellas County Commissioner Norm Roche regularly dumped under his brilliant commenter handle “Reality,” he also went around anonymously insulting all the local officials in his county (which includes St. Petersburg) that he apparently just pretends to work with when he isn’t feverishly spewing bile at them online.

As a guitarist, JJ’s Black Cat is a rockin’ piece to jam to. I really hoped that she would continue in that vein (rock) but unfortunately it was a one-off song.

    @JenJen:

JenJen, it is filmed to appear to be one long take, but if you pay close attention, you can see that there are maybe four breaks, where doorways or extreme, split second closeup/blackouts are used to mask a break between takes.

Regardless, I LOVE LOVE LOVE this video. Never can decide if Control or Rhythm Nation is my fave.

Either way, Miss Jackson (if you’re nasty!) rocked the 80s.
