Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

All your base are belong to Tunch.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Presidents are not kings, and Plaintiff is not President.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

John Fetterman: Too Manly for Pennsylvania.  Paid for by the Oz for Senator campaign.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

A Senator Walker would also be an insult to reason, rationality, and decency.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

“Squeaker” McCarthy

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

A lot of you have pointed out the change.org thing was messing up the screen, so I removed it. Are there any other minor problems that need to be addressed?

Yes. This AMC thing about showing hokey-assed 50s and 60s westerns on Saturdays makes me want to run death panels for the sorts of old people who find that sort of “entertainment” to be desirable.

Yea, how about getting some real bloggers instead of these typing monkeys.

The worst of the worst typing monkeys are:

Anne the black helicopters are coming to shut down OWS Laurie
Mister All Cain all the time Mix
Doug Meet Me at the Mens Room at Applebees on Saturday J

And add yourself to that list Wrong Again Cole….However, like your opinions, that one is clearly not practical.

Why does the site sometimes not let people edit comments, even if they’re within the five minute edit window? It’s an intermittent problem, but definitely happens. Is it just FYWP?

Also, more John Cole posts and more Tunch, Lily and Rosie pics, please. Videos of them would be excellent. And Ginny and Guesly pics and videos would be a real bonus, especially if they’re messing up your dad’s nice clean room after he’s vacuumed.

    @Violet:

Why does the site sometimes not let people edit comments, even if they’re within the five minute edit window?

Don’t know for sure is this is true, but: I read somewhere else on this site that when a comment gets released from moderation (or deleted), WordPress screws up the ownership tag for the subsequent comments up to the time of release. So, if a comment gets taken out of moderation during your 5 minute window, you’ll lose your right to edit it.

Your block quote comes inside the paragraph, instead of outside of it, which is wrong. For example, on the last post you made, in regards to the protestors, the code looks like this (and I’m using bracers instead of brackets so it’s visible) :

[p] [blockquote]During the early afternoon hours and because of the request to take down the tents, … [/p]

[p] To this effect, I am forming a task force made of faculty, students and staff … [/blockquote] [/p]

This is improper syntax and it causes havoc on some browsers. Consistently, the second paragraph looks like it is outside of the block quote on my reader. The block quote should be outside the p’s. Since it is inside, it is being closed by the closing P in the first paragraph and subsequent paragraphs look like part of the blog post commentary instead of part of the quoted material.

    It should look like this:

[blockquote] [p] During the early afternoon hours and because of the request to take down the tents, … [/p]

[p] To this effect, I am forming a task force made of faculty, students and staff … [/p] [/blockquote]

Maybe our society is just numbed by the abuses of authority figures

That’s exactly what they’re thinking, John. They’re thinking that they can get away with it, and many of them got into the business of exercising physical authority because they like bullying and abusing people.

Good cops know this and if they can do it without reprisal, they’ll point out the psychopaths around them, lickety-split. The problem is that the current cultural norms reduce accountability to the level that the psychopaths often succeed and flourish.

Neither is my thinking what it was back when I was a practicing software geek, so sometimes I realize only too late that I haven’t represented my thoughts very well.

@WeeBey: Late getting back and I see others have responded, but I think Target’s taking a ridiculous angle here. It’s irrelevant even if it’s true that the employee already had Black Friday off. He’s not doing it for himself. He’s not calling attention to it for himself. Maybe it’s a crazy thought in today’s world, but perhaps he cares about his fellow coworkers?

Look, I’ve been in the food & beverage business for most of my life. I’ve worked plenty of Thanksgivings and Christmases. Thing is, I sure wasn’t making $8.00 an hour, and I knew going in that especially in the bar business, you’re open on Thanksgiving. This opening-on-Thanksgiving or at midnight thing is relatively new to retail. I think it’s a horrible trend based on greed, and I feel especially for low-wage employees who have to leave their families on one of the most sacred of American holidays just to face the mobs of shoppers. It’s gross.

Just my opinion, but can’t Target go six hours without shoveling in money? Same goes for any of the retailers opening on Thanksgiving itself. Midnight is bad enough.
