House is clean, everyone is gone, leftovers prepped for tomorrow, so it is me and three half empty bottles of wine that guests opened but did not finish. I know what I have to do. I already had my daily Little Feat (I listen to Little Feat once a day every day to keep me sane) while cooking, so what should I listen to? I’m in the mood for AOR, so I might rock Yes-Relayer.

Live at Leeds Back in Black. Babe, I’m Gonna Leave you.
Getting up at 5 AM for our latest Teen Car Control Clinic. Sorta like teens outa control, but in a very safe place at Thunderhill Raceway Park in Willows, CA, We have them practice all the stuff you can’t practice on the street; emergency stops, emergency lane change, slalom, skidpad, two wheels off the road, and, at the end of the day we take them on the track in our cars, then they hoon their folks’ cars on the track. Oh, and CHP gore-fest videos after lunch.
Good times!

You could always drop some window pane and lie on the floor with some headphones on and trip out on The Dark Side of the Moon. That would be interesting, especially if you blogged about it in realtime.
We’re waiting.

Oh well, shine on you crazy diamond, anyway.

John! Happy belated Thanksgiving! I am putting off the inevitable having to read 60 comments about drones. Yes, drones kill people and the federal government is infatuated with them. And, since this is FDL, Obama sucks, also too. Please tell me more.
(In the previous thread, EW was trying to show Kucinich doing something good, which she acknowledged to be symbolic in part, and at least 5 people were having none of it because of HCR. What are you going to do?)
Led Zeppelin looks obvious.

Zeppelin was so obvious two people got there first.
After I looked at what KSHE played today, Lynyrd Skynyrd and SRV would be two other choices.

@licensed to kill time: The whole album’s great, but I think my favorite song is “My God”, which never gets played on the radio, at least in the US.

I’m enjoying the IFC Arrested Development marathon. I missed the show when it was on and it is everything I had heard it was. If he decides to run, can we call Evan Bayh the world’s first Psycho-Analrapist?
The prophet Nostradumbass
@Suffern ACE: Heh. that show was pretty awesome, but for me, IFC have beaten it into the dust, and I can’t stand to watch it any more, at least for a while.

I actually saw them do Aqualung live in the early 70’s (can’t be more specific because, well…see the windowpane ref above)…Ian Anderson was like some mad elf in tights blowing that flute and prancing and rearing about the stage.
The prophet Nostradumbass
@licensed to kill time: Cool! I saw Jethro Tull in, I think 1984, my freshman year in college, a night after seeing Motörhead (!), and it was an awesome show. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many bongs before, or since.

Every time I get hammered Zeppelin is on the playlist. Hell, Physical Graffiti and Animals by PF are my fav turn them on and fall asleep albums.
BTW- I need new speakers. Lookin at the Polk LsiM’s.

When I get drunk, and am at loose ends, I tend to start flipping thru the iTunes play list at random, or use the iTunes DJ feature. Right now, it’s serving up Black Flag.

I saw Led Zep back in the day too…I was a naive teenager and had never heard double entendre lyrics before (the squeeze my lemon til the juice runs down my leg was kind of…uh, wtf? ) but later was introduced to the whole genre of old blues that was just dripping (heh) with ’em…
“now, if it don’t fit I’ll push it up and down, and if it don’t fit then I’ll push it round and round – oh please let me have it! I just gotta have it! oh baby won’t you give it to me please (I mean that diamond ring) oh baby won’t you give it to me, please!”
“I’m just a coalman, selling the hottest stuff in town – if you empty your bin I’ll put it right in, because I’m just a coalman, baby, selling the hottest stuff in town”
Butterbeans and Susie, check ’em out

The late and much-missed Sara had a comment in the thread, so I got my wish. Predators were used to patrol the Canadian border and there was some publicity about using them to chase storms. In general I was forcefully reminded that when EW’s posts got frontpaged the IQ level dropped 10 points. It was always like that.

“The Best Of Ray Charles” always puts me in a great mood. It’s one of the best “best of” albums out there…
Let me tell you ’bout a girl I know
She is my baby and she lives next door
Every mornin’ ‘fore the sun comes up
She brings me coffee in my favorite cup
That’s why I know, yes, I know
Hallelujah, I love her so
Or you can just get the Led out. I dearly love Zeppelin but sometimes it can be a bit heavy if your not in that kind of mood.
CaliCat
oops, you’re not your…I hate when I do that. Then again, it’s the middle of the night…snore.

While not in any way rockin’, if you want a good tune that I think really feels like it is appropriate for the current atmosphere, check out Arlo Guthrie’s, “In Times Like These”. It really strikes me as an anthem for the Occupy movement. The last line of the tune is: I walk with friends from every nation on freedom’s highway in times like these. Yes, Arlo is still around making music. I think this tune was written around the time of our invasion into Iraq.

Next for our Republican friends and their super patriotism is John Prine’s, “Your Flag Decal Won’t Get You Into Heaven Anymore”. This particular version from 2004 has a great little rant in the middle of it.

Finally, since you seem to be in a grateful and reflective mood I would suggest Townes Van Zandt’s – To Live Is To Fly. Anyone that is not familiar with TVZ, he is truly one of America’s great songwriters. Honestly, comparisons with the likes of Dylan are not unwarranted.

Scissor Sisters cover of “Comfortably Numb.”
Trust me, it’s totally worth it. It’s not that it’s a great song or anything. In fact, on it’s objective merits, I’m sure you’ll hate it.
But listening to it is like waking to a future where an overly self-important stoner’s head explodes in impotent rage…. forever.
Also, +5.

Wish I had a live album of the best concert I saw: The East Grande Ballroom in Detroit, November 1969: Jethro Tull, with an opening act of Chicago. It cost $5.
I just heard Michele Bachmann interviewed on NPR. You could hear her eyeballs spinning.
burnspbesq
“Kind of Blue,” then “Giant Steps,” then “Blues and the Abstract Truth.” hard to go wrong there.
Or Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 if you’re in the mood for the truly sublime.

Thanksgiving dinner was good. Relatives of all political stripes stuck to safe topics of conversation, agreeing that Jerry Sandusky is scum, college is too expensive, we don’t really miss the NBA, and whipped cream in a can is a great invention.

@licensed to kill time:
I saw them doing Aqualung in Boston, probably the same tour as yours. As much as I liked Aqualung, I’d have been much happier if they’d done Benefit and Stand Up instead.

@Kirbster: Decades ago a friend mentioned that Thanksgiving was a nightmare because the son was very upset about that canned whipped cream.
I make my own whipped cream but if I were that mom I’d be tempted to empty the can on his head.

Hope all BJ’s had a great holiday.
We had our first holiday celebration at my mother-in-law’s retirement village condo – cooking in her new kitchen rather than join the line at the steam tables. Other than setting off the smoke alarm because we didn’t know the location of the exhaust fan switch, it was great.
Today, ice skating lessons and maybe the Muppet movie.

Turkey breast came out reeeeeeally well. I might just brine next year, kinda getting the hang of this whole “cooking food” thing. Of course, having a working oven gave me a big leg up on it lately.

I survived the holiday relatively unscathed. There were fourteen of us. I roasted a 27 pound turkey and there isn’t much left. I made a ten pound bag of potatoes into a fluffy, creamy, buttery bowl of mashed potato magic, and not a spoonful remained. I slow-cooked five pounds of green beans for seven hours and there was not anything left in the pot. There were countless side dishes to suit any taste.
And we had nine different desserts, all but one homemade.
So, that’s a success in my book. Now I have three glorious days off to work on my latest rug-hooking project and not cook anything.
Cermet
Well, Cole, you must be very pleased by the Thanksgiving Day results since the Ravens won and by an overwhelming measure (in defense.) The Steelers couldn’t be better positioned – they play KC and next up for the Ravens, Cleveland: a guaranteed defeat for the Ravens (they always lose to an extremely weak team after any big win.) Only the mini-by may help them prevent a total beat down (and lose close, instead.) If not, the Steelers are in trouble unless Cleveland gets the upper hand in Baltimore – that is not likely (San Diego looks to be in trouble and are too good for the Ravens to lose to.) Cinci will win their next meeting with the Ravens (that QB is the best upcoming QB in the NFL and looks to be for real – both the Ravens and Steelers will not be happy next year with Cinci) but Cinci’s win does not get the Steelers in free for the AFC title – so the Steelers had better hope that Cinci gets in, too but then it is Cinci that has to play Ravens – otherwise, the Steelers are toast.

Thanksgiving is probably my favorite holiday. Great food, good company and three days off to recover. It is truly the Great American Secular Holiday.
As far as music for Black Friday I think a Black theme would do. Start with Black Friday by Steely Dan, 1952 Vincent Black Lightning by RT, Black Magic Woman, by Santana, anything by Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Etc.

Went to the University of Malaya Medical Centre to replenish my meds, as I do every month. Discovered that the doctor who saw me earlier in the week had left one important medication off my new six-month prescription. Feh. Had to rush to UMMC’s heart clinic to get a prescription written just for that one medication. Grump.

It amazes me that pepper spray is sold to the general public in America. It’s just the sort of thing a stickup artist might use to persuade his, um, benefactors. Here, it;’s about as legal to carry as an unregistered firearm.

Wow. Thanks for all of these. I especially love the Arlo song — didn’t know he was still around. And good.

@Svensker:
I saw Arlo in October at the Guthrie Center in Great Barrington. In addition to his hits and great stories, he led us all in a sing along of This Land Is Your Land. It was at the beginning of OWS, and brought it all home. He’s more relevant now than he’s been in a long time.

Today we’re still dealing with police raring to use all the “cop equipment that they had hanging around the police officer’s station” on citizens. The equipment is a lot more lethal these days but the motivation hasn’t changed since 1965.

@Svensker:
Glad to pass along any music that people aren’t aware of, or forgot about over time, which might enrich their day. The true genius about the net, and sites like youtube, is access to the obscure.
Also, catlady is right that Arlo is quite a fun time to see live. He intertwines music with storytelling that can be everything from poignant to humurous. And I love the fact that “This Land is your Land”, is considered to be a super patriotic tune, when in fact it was written by Woody Guthrie as a response to “America the Beautiful”, and the verses that never get sung are basically DFH/ commie proclamations.

Haven’t been able to listen to Yes since first hearing The Ramones. Went to see Jools Holland at the Royal Albert Hall tonite and Chris Difford came out to sing Take Me I’m Yours and Cool for Cats, so I’m gonna suggest you put on some Squeeze. BTW, Gilson Lavis is a monster! Or, you could try my band, Color School, just click my handle! We’re even available in iTunes!

For me, it will always be Steely Dan.
My back to the wall
A victim of laughing chance
This is for me
The essence of true romance
Sharing the things we know and love
With those of my kind
Libations
Sensations
That stagger the mind
I crawl like a viper
Through these suburban streets
Make love to these women
Languid and bittersweet
I’ll rise when the sun goes down
Cover every game in town
A world of my own
I’ll make it my home sweet home
