There’s a reason why nobody runs the option in the NFL, eventually, your QB is going to get hurt, period. The personnel you need to run the option is different from a “pro-style” offense. If your option QB gets hurt, you better damn well have a backup option QB, because you can’t just flip a switch and start running a “West Coast” offense.
Their athletic department is monumentally stupid for firing Turner Gill after only two years. Jesus Keerist His Ownself couldn’t have cleaned up Mangino’s mess in two seasons.
Gill won at Buffalo, fer Crissakes. The man can coach. This is going to haunt the Rockchalks for a decade, minimum.
I think quite a few people would argue (including me), that being a coordinator at LSU or Alabama, is a better job than being head coach at the majority of schools in the country.
Someone like Mike Leach is exactly who they are going to end up with, now that Rich Rod is off the market. Head coach at Illinois is a hard sell in 2011 for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is that, you are going head to head with Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Notre Dame for the same recruits. Even with Penn State weakened, it’s still a daunting task.

As a Bears fan I have to say I despise Mike Martz. The dumbest fucking offensive genius ever. You have second and 1 from the five, you’re running the ball at will, and you decide to try a screen pass? Even if your QB wasn’t starting his first game ever, this would have been a moronic idea. And it’s not a regular screen, but one where the QB roles to the right then throws all the way back across the field, making it even more difficult. So instead of going into half-time with at least a field goal and the lead, the interception is returned 80+ yards and gives a score and the momentum to the Raiders.
This guy makes more idiotic calls in the red zone than any coach I’ve ever seen, all trying to prove how unpredictable he is.
And how difficult is it to figure out that with an inexperienced QB, and your running backs averaging over 5 yards a carry against a woeful run defense that maybe, just maybe, you should spend the bulk of the game handing the ball off. Is there anything more pathetic than a coach that is incapable of adjusting his game plan to the conditions that actually exist? I’ll bet he’s a Republican and believes that the answer to every economic condition is deregulation and tax cuts.

OTOH, the Broncos seem to have done a good job of moving from a conventional pro-style offense to the option when they decided Plan A wasn’t working. Maybe the option is a good choice as Plan B. From an Iliini message board:
Zook is a class act, a great guy. I think it is time to start fresh with a new coach however. We had some really memorable times under coach Zook’s tenure. We were an illegal formation call at Iowa from a Big Ten title, the year we went to Pasadena. He did everything you could have asked out of a coach, he ran a clean program and he loved our University, but the one thing he didn’t do was get the W’s. Maybe the next coach can, maybe not. Either way it was time for a change, I wish him well in his future, good luck Zook
I’m sure to some of the players, Zook was the only father figure they have ever had. This must be a very difficult time for those players, but I’m confident in saying they were in good hands with Zook, and they will carry themselves as better men for it.
At the very least, it’s different from what defenses are used to trying to stop. I think there’s some value to being different from everybody else.
Yep. That’s what me, and the rest of the fans of Georgia Tech, tell ourselves too.
