Over at our sister site, Rumproast, they are holding a fundraiser for StrangeAppar8us, who has suffered an undisclosed brain injury. If you can help out a friend in need, that would be awesome.

If you have a blog, help spread the word, also too.

    I hear Strange is now doing better, which is good news for sure. Kind of puts things in a more human perspective. Get well soon, dude, I miss your witty words at Rumproast.

    If I make any sales, I’ll donate a bit more. But I am glad to hear he’s back and recovering.

    Rumproast is a sister site?

    Is this now the Balloon-Juice media empire? When do you start hanging with Nick Denton?

    He’s blind. I don’t know if it’s permanent. Makes me want to weep. Such a good soul.

    Thank you so very much, Mr. Cole.

    @General Stuck: It is true that Strange is out of danger, but sorry to tell you that he will be fighting an uphill battle for years to come. This is no small thing and he won’t be “getting well soon.” He has lost his vision, as well as having to recover from traumatic brain injury. How I wish I could tell you better news.

    With time, and adaptive technology that I hope we will be able to fund, he could conceivably write again, and I, an unreligious person, pray that he’ll work through this loss and find his unparalleled voice again. My deepest gratitude to all of you.

    Thanks for linking to us, John. It’s greatly appreciated.

    Maude, unfortunately, Strange is going to be permanently blind. They thought there was a chance he might retain some of his sight his first day in the hospital, but they changed that prognosis the next day.

    @Kevin K.:
    Thank you for telling me. I’ll be thinking of him every day.
    He can blog if he can dictate. That is, if he wants to in the future. Sounds odd, but he has a lot of love for him at Rumproast.
    I can’t donate as I’m hoping to make December rent. When I have a bit of scratch, I will send it along. This is for down the road, not just now.

    @Mrs. Polly:

    I didn’t really know the extent of his injury. This is very sad, jeebus. At least he has some very good friends to help him along the road to recovery.

    @General Stuck: Friends he does have. And Maude, and other people who are not able to contribute monetarily right now: this is this ultimate example of “marathon, not a sprint.” A trust is being set up for Strange, and we will be doing our best to find ways to raise money for him down the line.

    Rumproast will endure, find our funny again, and be there both for our dear friend and to make sure there is always a source of childish humor/jokes to keep your work firewalls busy. ;->

    If you haven’t ever visited Rumproast, well, what the hell is wrong with you? It is one of Mr. Cole’s favorites. I urge everyone to go back through the archives and read StrangeAppar8us’s stuff. His blogging persona is a little like DougJ but rather than musical refs more anime/comics/scifi nerd stuff. Not to mention wickedly sharp political commentary. He is one funny and deep dude.

    Then, like I did, kick in what you can.

    @Jewish Steel: JS, all that and T.S. Eliot, too. Considering his expertise in energy and electronics, it came as a surprise to one of our slightly stuffier trolls that he’s an English major, but he actually did a college-level analysis of Eliot’s Four Quartets when he was in high school.

    Unfortunately, I cannot contribute anything right now. But, fortunately, I’m pretty darn sure I’ll have a job in a few weeks. Helping Strange will be one of the very first things I do when I have money again.

    I’m sending positive vibes his way.

    @Michael D. (or handy): Could you find out from your IT guys what blocking software/service they use? I thought I got Rumproast released from most of the major blocking companies, but I guess there are a few I missed. Thanks.

    Just another StrangeAppar8us fan chiming in with the Thanks For This Brigade.

    He can blog if he can dictate

    Now I’m picturing the world’s most perplexed secretary. “Sir, I’m sorry, can you repeat that last part? (tap tap tap) Newt Gingrich… (tap tap tap) Mogo the sentient planet… no no, don’t bother explaining, I’m sure it’ll make sense to your readers.”
