The godson:

This is right after Cole was born, so he is still in “WTF I HAD IT MADE, PUT ME BACK MODE.” He’s got everything in the world ahead of him. I’m jealous.

He’s just so tiny and pink and perfect.

Aww…so sweet and tiny. Just wait, though. He’ll just get more and more awesome as time goes on, and he starts to smile and develop his own little personality. Months 2 through 9 are just golden.

my youngest godchild (I have 3 total, 2 boys, 1 girl) is my Aunt’s “change baby”. She had her in January and at the time she was 42 years old (she’s now 43) and she is fabulous. I don’t think I could love her more if she was my own.

Welcome to the joys of god-parenthood Cole. It’s got lots in common with being a grandparent. Oodles of love and kisses, none of the diaper changes ore all night feeding and pooping…lol.

I didn’t get the honors of the one I thought I should have (her godmother whipped her as an infant for not tolerating the diaper routine in the proper fashion) but I have made a connection with that terrible one and the one I was eventually given the same great honor to.

It’s one of the things I admire about the Catholic church. It binds me to both girls — because I know one’s godmother will screw her eventually and because I will be able to take care of both the one I am obligated to and the one who will not be so lucky if that unfortunate situation comes to pass.

I am bound to their survival and happiness and I love it.

Congrats on coming into this new responsibility.

Congrats to parents, John, and to Cole himself – it’s hard work being born, after all. I think being a godparent is the best of all possible worlds: you get as many baby fixes as you want, but also get to hand him back to his parents at the end of the day.

If you really want to be The Best God-Parent Ever:

Give the new parents about 4-6 weeks, then offer to babysit the kid overnight (if you feel comfortable doing so). The new parents after 6 weeks will have not slept more than 1 hour at a time, and will be so grateful for a night off it will make you feel like a superhero.

Be prepared, though: you will be feeding him every couple of hours, changing his diaper however many times, and walking with him when and if he has a melt-down. There’s a reason his parents look like pandas in bathrobes, and need the night off.

Wait until he starts to talk. It’s a hoot. I’ve been so lucky to have bilingual little ones who live in South America, but spend about 3 months of the year with me. When they’re toddlers, they have no idea there are 2 languages going on. It’s kinda fun to see the looks you get in public if you verbally prompt them in Spanish. Little blonde gringos speaking Spanish raises more than a few eyebrows.

What a cute little peanut! Mrs. JP just became a great aunt a few weeks ago and her grandniece is, of course, a totally adorable little peanut. She’s getting the usual flood of photos through Facebook. That’s partly the reason why I bought her a $300 plane ticket to Florida for right after New Year’s. It’s been about two and a half years since she’s seen her family in Florida.

Speaking of which, Mrs. JP and I could use bit of help this Xmas after our recent assault by battery. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

His speech has exploded in the last three weeks, and with it, has come a bunch of new skills. The kid can actually read a few words. And no joke about how fast they grow up — I can still remember being handed my son after he was born, and my husband joking over who was going to tell our oldest that the little sister she had been asking for was a boy… Now he is 17, more than a head taller than both of us and has a scraggly beard.
