Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Everybody saw this coming.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Bark louder, little dog.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Celebrate the fucking wins.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Let there be snark.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

Consistently wrong since 2002

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

I didn’t comment (or even read for that matter, I hate +1 lovefest death threads) on the Hitch death post, but I find it ironic that while JC called for restraint in talking about him, one of Hitchens’ most popular pieces of writing was a posthumus takedown of Mother Teresa.

Heh. This is good — Gay Republican Mayor Outed By Expensing His Canadian Gay Sex Store Purchases:

Receipts from embattled Southaven [Mississippi] Mayor Greg Davis reveal that he had the city pay for wide-ranging expenses including thousands of dollars worth of liquor, expensive dinners at a local restaurant and a visit to an adult store catering to gay men while on a recruitment trip to Canada.
    __
    […]
    __
As for the receipts, Davis, a Republican who ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 2008 on a conservative, family-values platform, said he couldn’t discuss specifics on the advice of his attorney.
    __
    […]
    __
… a review by The CA shows that Davis spent thousands of dollars at the Mesquite Chop House in Southaven and thousands more at local liquor stores. Also included in the receipts is a charge for $67 at Priape, a store in Toronto that is described by its website as “Canada’s premiere gay lifestyle store and sex shop.”

I’m thinking maybe this guy wanted to get caught. I mean, expensing your gay sex shop purchases to the city when you’re a closeted Republican? That’s just a whole new level of stupid.

I mentioned this very late last night… I was at the gym yesterday and one of the TVs was on CNN. John King’s (awful) show, to be precise. And what did I see but a full screen splash of the recent “annual collapse” post, credited to “Progressive Blogger John Cole, balloonjuice.com”. Was I really the only one who saw that?

    Liberal blogs letdown over Obama

Liberal bloggers reacted with renewed despair over news that Democrats could drop the millionaires’ surtax provision in their version of the payroll tax cut extension and that the president backed off his veto threat on legislative language about terrorism detainees.

“It appears Obama will not veto the Defense bill with the hideous detention policies, and I just heard that the Democrats have dropped the millionaire surtax for the payroll tax cuts. I never knew the amount of depression and self-loathing that was involved in becoming a Democrat. I honestly think I hate Democrats more now that I am one than I did when I was a Republican,” wrote progressive John Cole at Balloon Juice, in a blog post titled “Time for the Annual Collapse.”

I’ve got the Jefferson’s Theme song in my head for some reason…”Moving On Up”!

How did Róisín Murphy get eclipsed by people like Ke$ha?

On of my favorites by Murphy is a cleverly-veiled song about global warming, “Dear Miami.” It sounds like it’s about Miami scensters, but it’s about how all these self-obsessed people are running around oblivious to the fact that the world is falling apart.

“Dear Miami, you’re the first to go

Completely disagree where Apple is concerned. Every Apple product I have ever owned, going all the way back to the Mac Plus I bought in 1987, has exceeded expectations. I get why some people choose to go elsewhere. For me, Apple has always been the way to go, and continues to be so.

AT&T is the heavy in this episode. How do they not get that at this time of year, people want to take things home and put them under the tree? And there is no technological barrier to what I want to do, which is no different that what would happen if I ordered the kid’s new phone online.

Dunno if anyone’s mentioned it here yet, and if you read Reddit or Slashdot you’ve probably already heard, but the latest version of the popular AdBlock Plus extension (version 2.0) now includes a whitelist of “acceptable” advertisers which by default overrides your blacklist entries and subscriptions.

“Acceptable ads” include those which run third-party scripts and plant tracking cookies, meaning you could be exposed to drive-by malware downloads and violations of your privacy.

If you’re using the AdBlock Plus extension, click the ABP icon in the Add-on Bar and select “Filter Preferences” (or simply press CTRL+SHIFT+F) and then deselect the “Allow non-intrusive advertising” checkbox.
