Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

After roe, women are no longer free.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

“Why isn’t this Snickers bar only a nickle?”

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

“woke” is the new caravan.

Don’t expect peaches from an apple tree.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

You cannot shame the shameless.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

We’re not going back!

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

An unpunished coup is a training exercise.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Aw, schweet! (I confess I never heard of #5 Katie Roiphe.)

Hey, look at who Breitbart’s been stealing from.

I’ve never seen a pic of Erick Erickson. Why am I not surprised that he’s got two chins and no neck? Just another hyperovercompensating wrong-wing hatemonger.

Delicious stuff. I love that Halperin is #1, but I love even more his piece on Katie Roiphe. I hate that woman with a white hot hate and he just slays her.

OT, but I have been inspired by the death of Christopher Hitchins to order four of his books from the university library. Two I had already read (God Is Not Great and Letters to a Young Contrarian) and two I have not but look forward to (Thomas Paine’s Rights of Man: A Biography and Thomas Jefferson: Author of America). To think we will not have any more of that wonderful prose!

@The Moar You Know: that’s a little extreme. I’d be content with just having them assigned to minimum wage jobs in flyover America.

You know, the kind of job where you get to learn what life for average Americans is *really* about… and with the added bonus that if you try to express your opinion about anything, you get told to STFU and keep the fries coming.

Meh…..I say the professional left deserves the award simply because their method of trying to undermine the left and prop up the right is less obvious and not always intentional. It’s so hard to pick just one though. From Greenwald to Hamsher, Cenk, Olberman, Moore and of course the queen bee Arrianna Fluffington. It’s a very fertile field of dangerously stupid/subversive.

The entire staff of Atlantic was overlooked. There’s at least 2 or 3 over there that could have made the list. I guess Atlantic is now too much of a boutique and obscure media outlet to make big time lists.

    Log Cabin Republicans.

Self-loathing types who hope that if they suck up to Daddy enough, he will finally love them and stop beating them OR they simply see that there’s profit and power to be had by betraying one’s brothers and sisters.

The fact that Wolfie made the list doesn’t surprise me. Obviously his track record speaks for itself but I go back with him, kinda, to his days as CNN’s Pentagon correspondent.

Didn’t know him personally but I worked with a bunch of guys on the DoD side (back during my intel officer days) who did. Routinely they respected most of the press corps assigned there. The one notable exception was Wolfie. Dim bulb is putting it kindly.

It’s no wonder he’s advanced in his profession.

    @13th Generation:

I don’t get the idea that people who disagree on, say, the Assange accusations or the DSK accusations are the worlds worst monsters. This list read as is it was animated by grudges in a couple of high profile cases. Wolf has written some wrong-headed things (do you remember the military coup?), but she’s on this list because she disputed the rape charges against Assange in the Wikileaks case. It’s bizarre logic that made me a lot less interested in the concept (and author of the list.)

@Marc: I agree. Some of the libs on the list smack of tokenism. He had to cast around for some to include, and the criteria were a little inconsistent.

Should there be sidekicks on the list?

Morning Joe’s side kick seems like a hack.

And after hearing, and clearly identifying the Caddell and Schoen (sp?) duo during the Fox GOP debate, I think Caddell’s sidekick should be on some list. The most charitable thing I can think to say about their bloviating was that they sounded like they were drunk.

Edit: anyway, bottom line is that I think there must be more well rounded liberal hacks out there.

@Marc: The whole dumping on Naomi Wolf made no sense. It was just some spat Pareene had with her – all seemed within the bounds of normal disagreement between writers. He didn’t even mention her Napolitano/OWS conspiracy foolishness.

In a lot of ways it’s a very personal list. Some silly looking French guy nobody ever heard of, and a lot of good-looking women who play airheads on the TeeVee News taking space from the usual crowd, most of which were on last year’s list. Definitely some selection by picture.

If Alex Pareene were as motivated as the other hacks – he’d be on that list too.

Double, nay, TRIPLE for David Sirota (a more annoying and lazy writer, I’ve not seen at salon). See his craptastic “throw away your smartphone cuz it’s destroying your life” nonsense. Or his blatant race trolling articles. Or his vegan rampaging/moralizing bullshit. If there was ever a reason to punch a hippy, it’s name is David Sirota.

I’d rather read Robert Reich, the ask a pilot guy, or even Cary Tennis. heh.

  52. 52.

    jl

    December 16, 2011 at 4:54 pm

    @Downpuppy:

that is why the list is worth a skim, for specific instances of malfeasance and unethical conduct by the hall of famers, or the soon to be hall of famers.

In my opinion, if Pareene wanted to do something useful, and a little different he should broaden his horizons. For example and hack list for bad reporting, which is common.

One irritating example is reporting of the (artificial) Post Office crisis. I listened through an ‘in depth’ radio news report on the Post Office problems, not even a mention of the bogus ridiculous, and unique, Congressional requirements for retirement prefunding .

Or a list of the various hackish, self proclaimed, and very pretentious and inconsistent, and untransparent, ‘fact check’ organizations, some of which seem to be editorial rooms at random newspapers.

  53. 53.

    December 16, 2011 at 4:55 pm

@trollhattan: I confess I never heard of #5 Katie Roiphe.

Amanda Marcotte occasionally fisks Roiphe’s nonsense. I love this intro from a post last year:

Honestly, it must be exhausting to be Katie Roiphe, to have to spend so much time ginning up stories where the whole point of them is to be so wrong that it makes people physically uncomfortable. I mean, if I could get paid like she does to be wrong in ways that delight and invigorate the privileged as they strafe against the guilt trips laid upon them by those who have no real power over them, maybe I’d be able to summon the energies to be so very, very wrong all the fucking time.

@MikeJ: I meant his blond lady sidekick, whose name I can never remember to spell. I’ll take a shot at the first name: Mika? I think she is Spignew’s (sp?????) kid.

Edit; on second thought you have actively do something, or for some types of hack, actively do nothing on a regular basis to be a hack, so never mind. Mika only passively slides into random tantrums and episodes of poutrage. Not enough to even rate hackdom.

Fla. governor tries relating to black students with public housing tale

Confronted by a group of angry Florida A&M students outside his home on Thursday night, Florida Governor Rick Scott (R) attempted to generate some empathy by telling the mostly black crowd that he grew up in public housing. The students were protesting the governor’s call for James Ammons, president of Florida A&M, to be suspended following the hazing death of one of the school’s students.

Incredibly, Fox has decided to run the Josh Block story – that is, they’ve decided to run Block’s smears as a story, and cite Block as the source:

Media Matters, Think Tank Ripped for Israel Remarks: David Brock’s Media Matters, left- leaning group under fire for comments on lawmakers’ support of Israel

Top trending on their front page. Now that’s some balls, your story gets blown before you can post it and you run it anyway

Which is why Ask A Pilot is one of my favorite sections. And also, when he steps in it (like he did with his tranny-air gag) he fesses, acknowledges, moves on. Very professional.

Nearly every other contributor at salon could learn a thing or three from him.

Robert Reich, also too. He puts more thought into his material than most of the rest of the writers combined.

And FTR, Joan Walsh is an idiot – even when she’s right, double for David Sirota.

I don’t know why Salon didn’t farm the rich tapestry of idiocy it has in house. They didn’t really need to go outside for half of that list.

She’s not. She doesn’t even break stories. She just springboards her posts off of the other staff there (watch, she reacts – she doesn’t act). She’ll write a piece only after the rest of her minions are finished exhausting it.

I also suspect that another source is potential private carriers who want some action for doing less with more. And since there will be hoots of protest when regular delivery is unavailable or too expensive in many rural (and mainly conservative) areas, nice government outsourcing that will force them to do way less with way more, which GOP loves for their corporate base.

Too get back on topic, Pareene’s list is getting a little too precious. Should take on some more daring media and press hackitude, and a lot of reporting on USPS fake crisis falls into that category.

Clearly, the way to deal with a never-was-has-been like Cohen is to award him Hack Emeritus status and leave it at that.

It was good to see David Brooks make both lists — a testament to his important role as the country’s designated “reasonable conservative.” On the other hand, a pig like Erick Erickson is better suited to a list of the world’s worst and most useless human beings than to one of media hacks, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t belong on the 2011 list. (The porcine reference has more to do with Erickson’s character than his girth.)

    @Bago: huh?

my nick was selected after partaking in a potentially dangerous amount of keif.

it came from invader zim, I suppose.

Speaking of nicknames – Bago is a nickname of a friend of mine in meatspace.

Doubt you are he, but it’s a funny coincidence.

@tomvox1: I figure sully’s only major accomplishment in life was growing that grotesque beard.

(Some people can pull it off, I think – Krugman does the egghead, tweed-clad professor look pretty well – it works for him)

But in sully’s case – it just doesn’t work, he looks like the guy I imagine who scrawls his phone number on a truck stop restroom stall, for a tawdry cruise.. dunno why – he just does…

How many of these individuals have a degree in journalism or even bothered to enroll in a JOUR 101 class?
