Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Nikki Haley, who can’t acknowledge ‘slavery’, is a pathetic shill.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

This really is a full service blog.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Biden: Oh no. We’ve upset Big Pharma again.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

I’m more Christian than these people and I’m an atheist.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

“Cheese and Kraken paired together for the appetizer trial.”

When you’re in more danger from the IDF than from Russian shelling, that’s really bad.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

“And when the Committee says to “report your income,” that could mean anything!

There’s always a light at the end of the frog.

So is Greenwald right about the NDAA, or are we freaking out over not much? It seems like it’s codifying what was already happening, though that in itself is troubling to begin with.

    @BruinKid:

    NDAA:

If this bill just codifies what is actually happening, then I guess we are replaying the drama of Draco, who got into trouble with the ancient Greeks because he put into writing all the crimes they were killing people for.

That doesn’t make this bill morally correct, of course.

@BruinKid: Adam Serwer is probably a better person to go to for analysis on the bill. GG’s disdain for Obama tends to cloud his view sometimes.

It doesn’t allow the government to indefinitely detain American Citizens. It doesn’t stop the President from putting foreign terrorists in Article III courts. It does give the military a more prominent role(a role they don’t want).

As an aside, Lindsey Graham is f’n crazy.

@amk: I don’t think Greenwald is in any way a “rightist.” He seems to be a classic civil libertarian, which means he’s extremely skeptical of governmental control over anything, and has a hair trigger about encroachments upon liberty. For that reason he shares some of the rhetoric you might hear from Don’t Tread On Me types, but none of their obsession with the evils of redistribution (to Those People, you know the ones, they don’t work hard and always ask for handouts).

But like you I wish people wouldn’t group him with “the left.” He doesn’t seem to have much in common with the social justice left or the tried-and-true “bleeding heart” stances that my 1970s Berkeley parents tried to instill in us.

Samara has mentioned that the Republicans have to win 65% of the white vote in 2012 to win the presidential election.

I looked into that idea and did some research.

Minority voters in California participate in elections at close to the rate that white voters get involved, so I chose not to bother with that variable.
    http://www.ppic.org/content/pubs/jtf/JTF_CAMinorityVotersJTF.pdf

Minorities make up about a third of the population in the US, 35% actually.
    http://www.politicsdaily.com/2010/06/10/minorities-make-up-35-percent-of-u-s-and-over-50-percent-of-fou/
This is not the primary source, which is the census bureau, but the official statistical layout confused me so I used this predigested source.

In 2008, Obama apparently got 43% of the white vote. That would leave 57% for McCain.
    http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/chatterbox/2008/11/what_we_didnt_overcome.html

Does all of this make that 65% figure reasonable? I’m not sure. But it might be worth thinking about.
