Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Usually wrong but never in doubt

We still have time to mess this up!

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

The revolution will be supervised.

A last alliance of elves and men. also pet photos.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Being the leader of the world means to be the leader of peace.

Let there be snark.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Republicans in disarray!

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

All your base are belong to Tunch.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

So, the Greedy Old Perverts have their long-term agenda. What’s on everyone’s short-term agendas?

My short-term agenda is trying to reach the nytimes to accept my 50% off my subscription rate. Reaching them is as likely as Santorum winning in Iowa though.

That comic is all too true, unfortunately, and here in the great state of Indiana we know it all too well, courtesy of Mitch Daniels and his gang of orcs in the legislature. Indiana, always a trendsetter for troglodytes. I’m giving serious consideration to proposing that as a personalized license plate slogan.

I walked in the woods for an hour today, and I’m still coasting on the endorphins. Got to do that more often. And swimmng. I’m swimming tomorrow.

I’m heading to the gym to try to counter the effects of recent overindulgence in rich food and good red wine, plus another damned birthday (I know, I know, that last one is still better than the alternative…).

I’ve been back form NOLA since Monday evening and I’ve been fighting a cold since Monday morning. I always seem to contract something whenever I visit home. I guess I’m just not used to the NOLA weather anymore…boo hoo.

Right now, I’m catching up on politics and my blogroll.

I had a great time with the fam, and I was especially happy to see my god-baby Madison who’s all “grows up” (she’ll be 1 year old next month!).

Check her out: Maddie Says Hi

eta We just finished off the last of a huge batch of turkey-okra gumbo I made and froze in quarts for the holiday.

eteta Did you see any Treme Krewes out filming?

You know that cartoon would be funny if it wasn’t so damn true. Bless Gov Purdue here in NC for vetoing that shit.

Here in Tennessee yet another 90+ year old woman was told she will be unable to vote because of invalid ID. In this case, the woman in question cleaned the state capitol for over 30 years, including the governor’s office.

When she went to the driver’s license center to get her ID she was accused of being an undocumented immigrant because she doesn’t have a birth certificate. She was born in 1918 in rural Alabama, delivered by a midwife.

But hey, this woman who was trusted inside the governor’s office after hours *might* vote fraudulently! Can’t take any chances!

    @Raven:

I spent most of my time with the fam in N’awlins east (part of the 9th ward, but not the lower 9th). Didn’t venture out much except to see a movie (Mission Impossible, which even with my dislike of Tom Cruise, I’ve got to admit was damn good) and to 2 malls in Jefferson parish. So I didn’t see or here about any Treme film crews.

Only thing on NOLA’s mind was Christmas and the Saints vs Da Durty Bawds (Falcons) on Monday.

Pulling ethernet cable around, rejiggering the LAN to free up some switch room for a new device. Been recording my Pandora shuffle stream and copying the MP3s over to a flash drive to run the tunes in my truck.

@lamh35: I love how she’s just chilling with a crown on, nothing to see here. Plus, those legs! Those cheeks!

On Topic, my agenda is not letting my anger and bitterness at closing the year even broker than the last year with even less to live for, rule the next few days.

Bless Gov Purdue here in NC for vetoing that shit.

Amen to that! I just hope she’s able to hold off Mayor Pat for a second time. After the Thom Tillis fiasco, I hope my fellow Tarheels have learned that there ain’t no such thing as a moderate, reasonable Republican.

In other news, I was offline a couple days and missed JC’s first announcement about the 2012 B-J Pets Calendar. As soon as I saw his reminder yesterday, I ordered mine. I feel a little guilty about having 3 of my furballs in it but since that’s less than 50% of the ones living here, I figure my greed/pride is somewhat excusable.

Urgh. At least you have your kittehs. And if you haven’t started thinking about alternative living arrangements (to put it delicately), you may want to consider making some plans for 2012. Endings suck, but not as badly as letting things continue on the way they are. Just sayin’.

@Linda Featheringill: I don’t think anyone whose math for computing the water consumed includes a constant human population of the Earth of 6 billion people over the last 3 billion years and apparently thinks everyone gains 2kg/day from drinking water without getting rid of it is going to understand any basic science.

Watching Australia have their way with India in the second innings. India needs 198 more runs to win, and they only have four wickets left. Aussie bowlers have been stone killers today.

Here’s something that might interest people: Rob Zerban, who is running against Paul Ryan in WI-1, showed up on Reddit to answer questions:

    http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/nu501/i_am_rob_zerban_challenger_to_rep_paul_ryan_rwi/

The guy clearly knows how to talk the talk. Here’s hoping he can take down Ryan in November.

@lamh35: Maddie is a real sweetie. Have the parents ensure they do not leave her unattended in one of those walking sround stroller things (Maddie B photo). Have heard of little kids getting to a set of stairs in one of those & then tumbling down.
