Globastardization in action. Why do you hate me so, my love? is, after all, one of the great universals (see Green, Cee-Lo). Blame it on commentor Comrade Mary (who also provided the background).

Open Thread, so, I just played some WoW battlegrounds. I suck at it, but it’s fun anyway.

So I work for the State of Texas and I just got my monthly paycheck direct deposited (and, yes, getting paid once per month sucks as much as you think it would).

My check is about $60 less than normal. Why, you ask, since there weren’t any withholding changes for 2012 (the check is dated Jan 1)? Because the House Republicans took so long to pass the payroll tax extension that the TX Comptroller’s Office had already payroll for the entire State.

Apparently they are going to fix it, either with a special run or a one time adjustment in the Feb 1 payroll. Either way, I get to have not one, but two, (now, and when they fix it in a few weeks) truly awesome teachable moments with my coworkers about the tangible ways that the Republicans want to fuck over the middle class. And how the extension was only two months, and they need to keep holding feet to the fire.

@Gromitt Gunn: I just checked my monthly pay that was likewise posted today (not from the state of Texas), and it is also less than normal. I won’t be able to see the actual stub until next week, but the difference is consistent with the payroll tax difference.

Christ in a crosswalk. This is a teachable moment indeed.

So before my first cup of coffee I learned several things…there is a language: Tamil. And take it step further: Tanglish. I really like Bollywood movies, so I guess it’s no surprise I like this song. Guess I’ll have to search out Kollywood movies now.

Good morning. I have to work today. I hope everyone has a very safe and happy New Year’s weekend.

@Gromitt Gunn: Agree, drive it home. How much do you think those special runs are going to cost the state, too?

    Yep, still like this song.

One more neat twist on this: the singer, Dhanush, can portray a “soup boy” (lovelorn sad-sack, I guess) very well, but his father-in-law is a macho, stylish, stylized, balding, self-mocking superstar in Asia (including Japan):

Jackie Chan is the highest-paid actor in Asia, and that makes sense. Besides producing, directing, and starring in his own action movies since 1980, he’s earned millions in Hollywood with blockbusters like Rush Hour and The Karate Kid. But the No. 2 spot goes to someone who doesn’t make any sense at all. The second-highest-paid actor in Asia is a balding, middle-aged man with a paunch, hailing from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and sporting the kind of moustache that went out of style in 1986. This is Rajinikanth, and he is no mere actor—he is a force of nature. If a tiger had sex with a tornado and then their tiger-nado baby got married to an earthquake, their offspring would be Rajinikanth. Or, as his films are contractually obligated to credit him, “SUPERSTAR Rajinikanth!”
    __
… Indian message boards are alight with Rajinikanth jokes, the equivalent of Chuck Norris jokes. (“Rajinikanth was bitten by a cobra. After four days of intense suffering, the snake died.”) Onscreen, when Rajinikanth points his finger, it’s accompanied by the sound of a whip cracking. When he becomes enraged, the director cuts to a shot of a gorilla pounding his chest or inserts a tiger roaring on the soundtrack. Echo is added to enhance his “punch dialogues,” rhyming lines uttered at moments of high drama. “When I will arrive, or how I will arrive, nobody will know, but I will arrive when I ought to,” he snarls, confusingly. Or, “I will do what I say. I will also do what I don’t say.” Then he punches some goon so hard that he flies through the windshield of a minivan and continues on out the back window. Can’t argue with that.
