Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Bad news for Ron DeSantis is great news for America.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Joe Lieberman disappointingly reemerged to remind us that he’s still alive.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

We’re not going back!

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

As long as McCarthy is Speaker, the House will never be in order.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Spilling the end game before they can coat it in frankl luntz-approved dogwhistles.

… among the most cringeworthy communications in the history of the alphabet!

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Ron DeSantis, the grand wizard, oops, governor of FL

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

After roe, women are no longer free.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Especially other Republicans:

The best argument for hoping Gingrich stays close in the race is the guy is just ruthless and will have no problem gutting any of the other candidates if he thinks it will be advantageous to him at that VERY minute.

@burnspbesq: I am not convinced, though would be pleased to see it.

Comparing the very strong, ‘Romney is inevitable’, air I get from the radio now versus a month ago, when newt looked very strong, I suspect this will end VERY fast. No joy for the popcorn crowd.

Only a few hours left until Romney wraps this thing up.

When he wins in Iowa (or even if he comes in second to Paul) he’s still on the march to win the nomination. A win will do it more quickly, a second place finish to Paul only slightly less so.

Even Santorum finishing first would not be totally catastrophic. The only thing that can really stop Romney would be a 1) Santorum 2) Paul 3) Romney, but that won’t happen.

Romney will very probably win this thing outright.

I know we’re a little nervous seeing as the Republicans have always held the title for most atavistic troglodytes. But, really; aren’t they going into the Convention in chaos?. Aren’t their campaigns burning like crosses in Mississippi?

Whomever they crown as overachiever come Convention; aren’t they behind the shot-clock at mid-court?

I don’t hold out much hope that the evil-slasher clown show that is the GOP Presidential candidate field will cause any of the 27-percenters to decide to consider instead voting for Obama in November. I do hope it will de-motivate enough of them from turning out, however. The biggest effect it may have is to discourage GOP-leaning independents from turning out in November.

Heard that Gingrich interview this AM. It was quite interesting.

He’s on a war against Democrats. But the people who’ve earned his true hatred are his fellow Republicans. I am guessing a failure to acknowledge his genius is the problem, as it always has been his entire life.

No wonder his fellow GOPers have been hitting him so hard out of the gate. They’re (with good reason) scared to death of the payback he’d inflict if he could get into power.

You misunderstand the new term ‘liberal’ Matt S. Historically, Liberalism was the embrace of our Five Senses, the Seven Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the free exchange of ideas, to counter the power-grip of the Catholic Church. It, in my opinion, was a glorious celebration of man and discovery, and led to stuff like space flight and fast food.

This current crop just wants to shut you up, tell you what to eat, watch you with cameras, and take your money. These are the consequences of Truth being replaced with Religion, or Belief in the Absence of Perception. When observations are articulated (sight, sound, touch, taste, smell) that run counter to the Dogma, they are suppressed by calling the voicer of observations names. Then they censor you. Then they blow you up. Consider the book 1984.

My other half and I went to a gathering of our college friends who live around us. Almost all of these folks are now republicans with libertarian/militia leanings. They know we’re liberals & Democrats but don’t give us too hard a time. When I started playing Devil’s Advocate bringing up the Republicans in Iowa, not one of these very conservative people had one good thing to say. Every one of them thought all the candidates sucked and were very unhappy. The only candidate they thought who actually meant what they said was Ron Paul and they don’t like his foreign policy views (warmongers gotta war I guess).

I was impressed they weren’t pulling a Fox News thing where there is never good news about a Democrat or bad news about a Republican. Mind you, they still all hate Obama and believe the things we all laugh about republicans saying here, but if Northern Cal is a sign, it is a very bad sign for Republicans. Does that translate into good news for Barack? Hardly. Look at the media. They act like they want Obama to lose & I think they do. But it was nice to know.

I don’t take much solace in the die-hards unhappiness, because they will vote on November 2012 against Obama, and someone like Romney could pull along independents.

It’s the only position a true lover of liberty could take.

States should be allowed to choose whether they want to re-segregate schools or not.

. . . the guy is just ruthless and will have no problem gutting any of the other candidates if he thinks it will be advantageous to him at that VERY minute.

Which makes him different from the others, how, exactly? Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

    @The Moar You Know:

I am guessing a failure to acknowledge his genius is the problem, as it always has been his entire life.

That would be his diagnosis of the problem. Those of us in the reality based community would call his failure to be a genius the underlying problem. The reason Newt looks so bloated is because his ego is trying to physically manifest, and no human body is big enough to contain it.

    @Gin & Tonic:

Just makes me wonder, if you’re posting, say, comment #638, what purpose are you serving?

You’re settling a score with whoever posted comment #635, who you know damn well is still actively reading because they posted six other comments in the past 15 minutes. Nothing is ever settled by a big shouting match where the positions boil down to “you’re an idiot” and “no, you’re the idiot”, but that doesn’t stop people from engaging in them in person. Why should on-line be any different.

As a denizen of Flori-Duh, I can report that the general feeling of sucki-tude among the pig-people is palpable. I really do think you’re going to find that a lot of regular GOP voters down here just aren’t going to be persuaded to open their pocket-books (gawd, I can’t believe I am actually using that phrase. I have become my grandmother!)

With the negative coat-tails that pRick Scott has after only two years in charge and the internal fighting and out-and-out hatred among the pig-people’s elected representatives, it’s going to be a really wild ride this year.

    @kindness:

[…] Mind you, they still all hate Obama and believe the things we all laugh about republicans saying here, but if Northern Cal is a sign, it is a very bad sign for Republicans.

According to facebook, same with my hillbilly cousins who’re enormously depressed with their candidate field.

I’d say they’re suffering from the same fatigue as Marxists started suffering from halfway through the twentieth century – namely, having your people come to power again and again and yet the earthly paradise they promised you keeps failing to materialize. There’s only so many times you can say “they didn’t do it right,” “they weren’t really on our team” and “give us another chance because the real problem is that we weren’t [insert ideology here] ENOUGH all these other times.”

Which doesn’t mean Movement Conservatism’s on its last legs by any means – after all, the USSR kept on keeping on for years after the average Soviet citizen stopped believing what his leaders were pretending to believe.

The most amusing thing about those headlines is
    1. They are both factual statements
    2. You can reverse the positioning of the names in those headlines and the still would be factual statements

Newt Gingrich wants to be president, period, -30-, end of story. He will do anything to achieve that end. That includes microwaving live kittens or feeding fellow Republicans headfirst into a wood chipper, for that matter. He regards himself as a man of destiny, and at this point he has nothing to lose – this is his last shot.

And of course these same people who are bitching about Romney Anonymous PAC being able to hit and decimate without having their fingerprints on it will have those same complaints when Romney is the candidate against Obama…
