Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

One way or another, he’s a liar.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

Shut up, hissy kitty!

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

75% of people clapping liked the show!

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Everybody saw this coming.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

A New Virus To Be Injected Into the Public Discourse

Lovely:

Impressed by the effectiveness of the liberal Center for American Progress, a group of conservative journalists and operatives are preparing to engage in their own sincerest form of flattery — launching an advocacy group with a similar name and mission but very different target.

Part assault on CAP and part homage, the Center for American Freedom’s goal is to wage a well-funded assault on the Obama White House and the liberal domination of partisan online media.

Based in Washington, it will have an annual budget of “several million dollars,” according to its chairman, Michael Goldfarb, and will house a new conservative online news outlet, the Washington Free Beacon, edited by former Weekly Standard writer Matthew Continetti. It will also include a campaign-style war room led by two former chiefs of the Republican National Committee’s vaunted research operation, and a media-monitoring shop that aims to do to MSNBC what Media Matters has done to Fox News.

“This is a fairly modest start-up that really hopes to combat the Center for American Progress and create something that in the not-so-distant future can be competitive,” said Goldfarb, 31, a former Weekly Standard writer who is now a partner in the lobbying firm Orion Strategies, where his clients include Charles and David Koch — liberal bugaboos and dominant funders of a range of conservative causes and politicians.

There is no slimier person in politics than this guy:

There seriously is no bigger douchebag on the planet, and I don’t mean Rick Sanchez. That the right wing is willing to throw millions of dollars at him to spew his bile tells you EVERYTHING you need to know about the modern right. Oh, and Matt Continetti? That’s this winner.

I guess I’m confused. I thought CAP was an advocacy group that was created to respond to the conservative think tanks like Heritage Foundation, American Enterprise Institute, and Plausible-But-False-Koch-Bullshit-Group. (I made up one of those names.)

So this new group would be a response to a response? Or is CAP doing something different than Heritage and AEI?

You shouldn’t have to use fractals to understand thinktanks…

Then again, most people have not heard of them, and the whole organization may exist more as a scheme to absorb Republican donations than be effective.

Then again there is plenty of Republican money available for those with the right pitch so might as well set of several such groups and see which are the most tractable.

    GOLDFARB: Rick…
SANCHEZ: You said he hangs around with people who are anti-Semitic. Okay, we’ve got Khalidi on the table. Give me number two. Who’s the other anti-Semitic person that he hangs around that we, quote, “all know about.”
GOLDFARB: Rick, we both know who number two is.
    (silence)
    SANCHEZ: (shaking head) Who?
    (pause)
    SANCHEZ: Would you tell us!?
GOLDFARB: No, Rick, I think we all know who we’re talking about here.

I see this as a sort of mirror-image of the left’s history of looking at Rush and his sort, and wondering “why can’t we do a liberal version of that?” The answer is that there is no liberal version of Rush (because the liberals are short on articulate-seeming-because-they-spew-hate-so-fast knownothings) just as there is no possibility of a teabag version of CAP. Because a conservative CAP would require that the teabaggers deal in ideas that have some plausible connection with reality, that being what CAP is about.

Damn, I’m really on the wrong side! Seems all you have to do nowadays is put together a front organization, whose brief is too slam those lefties (cause no one else is doing that) and the super rich suckers will throw wads of cash at you.

@Calouste: Totally! I’m seriously annoyed at what wingnuts have done to the word “freedom.”

@Calouste: Only counter-example I can think of is the EFF, and I’m sure there’s more than a hundred ‘freedom’ foundations. You may be on to something.

    @joes527:

Wait – I thought that Olberman was today’s designated douchebag.

Nah, Olbermann’s just a douche, not a douchebag. He’s still your friend, but every so often, you roll your eyes at each other behind his back because, well, he’s being a douche.

The douchebag is the guy not in your group who tries to hit on your girlfriend when you go to the john.

ETA: If you saw that Zooey Deschanel show “New Girl,” Olbermann is Schmidt.

How can you be stupid enough to get owned by Rick Sanchez, but still have enough brain power to breathe?

I read that as “Washington Free Bacon”. Now I’m disappointed.
