Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

After roe, women are no longer free.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

We still have time to mess this up!

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

All your base are belong to Tunch.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Golden Globes Open Thread

Was watching the Giants game and got this panicked feeling as I suddenly realized I hadn’t heard the girls lately- “Did I leave them outside? What are they doing wrong?” and so forth. Went into the bedroom and found out why they were so quiet:

I guess that is about as good a way to spend Sunday afternoon as watching football.

Not being one to tramp on a new post, even an open thread, I’ll note with some small happiness that SOPA appears to be effectively dead, at least for the time being.
ACTA and PROTECT IP are still alive and kicking in the Senate, but this is good news.

@Soonergrunt: I’m thrilled it’s dead, I just wish people hadn’t felt it necessary to lie so much about what it did and didn’t do.

It did 1) make US based DNS servers irrelevant 2) increase penalties for counterfeiting.
It did not require 20 years in prison for singing a song on youtube. In fact there was nothing about casual infringement by individuals in the bill. If you ran a web site outside of the US that had files that infringed on US copyright or sold dvds on the street in St Mark’s place you were in big trouble.

People kept making up all sorts of shit that simply wasn’t in the bill. Thank god and greyhound it’s gone.

Once again, we hear the jackboots of President Bush-Lite Obambi bringing us the DRONES, PEOPLE, DRONES! IN AMERICA!

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A Russian tanker with a cargo of much-needed fuel for Nome was moored less than a half mile from the Alaska town’s iced-in harbor Sunday morning, holding for disturbed ice to refreeze before crews can finish work to deliver the fuel, the Coast Guard said.
    __
Teams on the ground were preparing to deploy two small drones to survey the ice before laying down a fuel hose from the tanker to the shore.
    __
“Today’s unmanned flight operations will involve imaging the work to lay the hose and provide an aerial perspective the [sic] the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and the industry team to support their spill response planning/preparations,” Greg Walker, who runs the drone program at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, told msnbc.com Sunday morning.

Yeah, sure: a peaceful use for drones. Unpossible!

Damn, Cole. That is just an overdose of cute.

I need it. Henry has stopped eating altogether (though he is still drinking and will eat a treat). My John has finally come to the conclusion that it really is time to call the Rainbow Bridge people. We hope that Henry goes on his own, but this week is the end, either way. I can’t bear to see him so helpless much longer and John has finally resigned himself to the inevitable.

Even Otis is sensing that things are coming to the end. He is being sweet to Henry, this after years of, at best, pretending he doesn’t exist or, at worst, open animosity. John already is a basket case and I’m well on my way there. I just have to be the strong one until we say goodbye. And then I’ll fall apart like a cheap suit.

Give your doggies lots of love, Cole. And keep our Henry in your thoughts. He’s been a very, very good dog.

I just realized that the only TV network show to win anything was on PBS. You need cable to watch the other shows. I guess since I won’t be able to afford to get Showtime or HBO, I won’t get to see those shows. Neither will anyone who can’t afford cable.
