    The only thing I not is that the Bully Pulpit is not a thing. It isn’t a noun really. It’s a metaphor.

    The bully pulpit as coined by Roosevelt is means a the Presidency is a great pulpit from which to espouse a position. When people criticize Obama they don’t mean that he needs to scare people like Bush did. They only mean that he could better use the Presidency to advocate for what he believes in.

    Obama sometimes lacks the ability to articulate clear ideas. He achieved Healthcare Reform! But that doesn’t really mean anything. The devil is in the details.

    Weirdly, that is the way the system is designed to work.

    I think of it as more of one end of a spectrum of options the Pre has, OO.

    I interpreted kwAwk’s comment to mean that Obama didn’t push the Congresscritters hard enough from a rhetorical standpoint. And yes, it’s the “bully pulpit” if you will.

    The days of LBJ-style arm twisting are long gone, I think, and getting out on the road or on the tube are probably the most effective tool Obama has short of the veto (which isn’t going to affect positive legislation) given the dysfunction of Congress.

    I’ve been pleased to see Obama step up his criticism of Congress in the past year. People have to realize that the root of our problems lie at the feet of a deeply broken legislative branch. They don’t for the most part. I don’t know if Obama pointing this fact out for the next five years would educate Americans, but that education has to start somewhere and I think that short of a functional press corps, the Prez is in the best position to get the message across to the people. I also think the “pass the bill” thing from Obama was the turning point from attempted cooperation with congress to the slow tightening of the rhetorical screws.

    I can almost believe some little piece of what our good friend Anal Probe has written: a child might find an overreaction to revealing sexual abuse more damaging than the abuse itself, if for some reason the victim didn’t have a strong reaction to the abuse.

    I don’t know if that ever happens in real life, and Mr. Glass-in-the-Ass hasn’t provided any citations other than his own recollections of how he felt in his youth. There might even be some occasional ten-year-olds out in the world who are psychologically mature enough to be able to give informed meaningful consent to sex with a 60-year-old, since people mature at different rates and all. (It still seems unlikely even in the case of Kola Nut, given the maturity level apparent in his trolling.)

    Legally, of course, that’s irrelevant since the minor was below the age of consent. Even ignoring the legal issue, if a child would be psychologically traumatized by being interrupted in the middle of “voluntarily” being penetrated by a 60-year-old in a gym shower, that child is not anywhere close to being mature enough to be able to consent meaningfully to that activity. There is also no way for the 60-year-old to know whether his victim could give meaningful consent. There’s no situation in which intervening and stopping the activity and reporting it to competent authorities leads to a worse outcome than ignoring it: in the best case a child gets counseling and a pedophile gets taken off the streets; in the worst case a child gets sexy fun time interrupted and learns that it’s appropriate to wait for when ze is older to partake in sexy fun time with older people, and a pedophile gets taken off the streets.
