Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Come on, man.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Let me file that under fuck it.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Consistently wrong since 2002

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Disappointing to see gov. newsom with his finger to the wind.

Hat tip to commentor Burnspbesq for the best comment I’ve seen on tonight’s debate so far. From Mark Kleiman at Reality-Based Community:

Expert opinion by Mark Kleiman
__
When Newt Gingrich says that a campaign has gotten “unnecessarily personal and nasty,” I think we should believe him.
__
I’m just afraid, with all the clearly true things that Mitt Romney is now saying about Gingrich, that some low-information voters might be fooled into thinking that Romney makes a habit of telling the truth.

Any cooks around? I want to make something like a tater tot casserole, but use up my Aidell’s Pineapple & Bacon Sausage and Alexia Sweet Potato Puffs in the process. Any ideas what cheese and/or other binders I should use to hold it all together? For some reason, goat cheese and cream of celery soup are sounding good, but I’m open to suggestions.

The pineapple and bacon sausage has an Asian-y taste and the sweet potato puffs are really sweet, almost dessert-like, if that helps.

That sounds promising, but I’m half Irish and I like potatoes in any and all fashion. This is my favorite dish of all time. From your ingredients, you sound like you’re more than halfway there. Just remember you can substitute as needed. You don’t need Cream of Mushroom, any Cream of… soup will do.

If you ever have to deal with a Pauline bleating about the wonders that would occur after we return to the gold standard, it’s quite useful to know about this little gem:

    http://www.igmchicago.org/igm-economic-experts-panel/poll-results?SurveyID=SV_cw1nNUYOXSAKwrq

    Summary here:

    http://blogs.wsj.com/ideas-market/2012/01/23/survey-no-support-for-gold-standard-among-top-economists/

One of the linchpins of Ron Paul’s insurgent campaign is a return to the gold standard. The Initiative on Global Markets, at the University of Chicago’s business school, asked its panel of economic experts — all of them scholars at the top research universities, Republicans and Democrats alike — whether they agreed with the following statement:
“If the US replaced its discretionary monetary policy regime with a gold standard, defining a “dollar” as a specific number of ounces of gold, the price-stability and employment outcomes would be better for the average American.”
The results were unambiguous, with the only disagreement among the experts lying in the degree to which they disagreed with the proposition. (Forty-three percent merely disagreed, while 57% strongly disagreed.)

My husband probably doesn’t really qualify as a low-information voter, but after having watched the last 40 minutes of that debate, in which he had only mild interest, he absolutely believed that Gingrich could debate Obama and could have done it better than McCain in 2008. All I could say was that these debates are between generic party labels, but Newt isn’t going to settle to be a generic party label, especially when he helped so much to create what the generic Republican label means.

    4jkb4ia

    January 24, 2012 at 2:45 am

Very impressive how little Gingrich had to reach on the “Who’s a true conservative” question and how much Romney had to reach. And all those things Newt reeled off are true, too, although they may not help him in the general.

i love how romney’s debate tactic is still ‘run out the clock’. he spends a full minute and a half not answering the question. when he does have an answer, it’s an answer to a question he flubbed at the last debate and got pitched a second time.

Go Newt! And drive’em down into the ditch with ya!

If Newt wins Florida he’ll also win Nevada, his SuperPAC sugar daddy is a Las Vegas casino mogul. Romney will have to regroup for the late February/Super Tuesday contests.

But I just can’t see Newt as the nominee, I never saw Romney winning either. I’m in brokered convention territory, i.e. Jeb Bush.

I’m sorry but remember when liberals were TOO ANGRY to be elected? We were told to not be so fucking ANGRY all the time? Massive amounts of column space and airtime on the bobblehead shows were devoted to how ANGRY liberals are and how Americans don’t vote for ANGERY people.

And then we’ve got these kunckledraggers of the GOP deciding they want Newt because he’s so angry he’ll KICK BUTT.

PeakVT’s comment above (#20) modestly proposing that GOP presidential candidates in Florida be strapped onto NASA rockets, prompted my curiosity about just how active NASA is now in the business of rocket launches.

According to NASA’s Launch Schedule, there are only three possible ones from Cape Canaveral this year, two with tentative launch dates in August and December and another under review.

I imagine that as a boy in the 1960s I must have believed that by the 21st century rocket launches and space flight would be as routine as aircraft travel
. The words “NASA” and “Cape Canaveral” still hold much wonderment for me, and the eclipse of the agency is a source of true sadness.

Blame Congress: There are at least 5 US companies that could get to ISS within 3-4 years. They just need the money to do so.

But, alas, the Senate Launch System (which might even fly by 2020) must not be interfered with, so the commercial companies get only $450 million between them this year (the Obama admin asked for 850).

To put it in perspective, the Russians will get ~$650 million this year from NASA, to fly astronauts to/from ISS.

@Southern Beale: a telling observation, but then lying, slandering, xenophobia, bigotry and the like don’t qualify as anger or “anger” as it’s understood by by the exalted guardians of CW that make up the village–they’re just Republicans being their usual lovable selves–real anger is, e.g., pointing out that inspections have discovered no WMDs, that torture is an act of supreme wickedness and a crime against humanity, that ever lighter taxes for the wealthy aren’t doing the country any good and so on.
