Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

All your base are belong to Tunch.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Presidents are not kings, and Plaintiff is not President.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

A last alliance of elves and men. also pet photos.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

This fight is for everything.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

“But what about the lurkers?”

Americans barely caring about Afghanistan is so last month.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Eh, that’s media spin. biden’s health is fine and he’s doing a good job.

Song of the week

FacebookTweetEmail

I meant this as an antidote to the Madonna halftime show. From JPK as always, but WordPress eated it at the time.

Boss Hog, “Ski Bunny” (1995)
This is my favorite song of all the Jon Spencer projects that I know, from the second, self-titled Boss Hog album. In typical Spencer fashion it lopes along at top speed, sounding at times like the players can barely keep up with one another. It’s full of good jokes even for as short as it is. I like the way it switches up expectations on the swearing, turning on a single word to convert it from a predictable moment of postpunk ragegasm into a hilarious junior high school plaint—and then going back again on that later.

Update. Weird, I can’t watch it, I was able to watch it before.

Let’s make this a Super Bowl open thread if we need another.

I know it is illogical to root for one car manufacture over another, but I’ve been conditioned my whole life to be a Ford man. That being said, I think Chrysler’s adds highlighting them being from Detroit and all that supposedly entails has been a stroke of genius. And generally I hate car adds. So this marketing scheme has overcome two of my default positions.

I blame you for this tonight DougJ, you switched to that name before the Jets game and the Pats lost, you kept from it up till the bowl but then broke out the hex for the big game and suddenly Brady’s giving the Giants 2 points with the first play of the game for the offense.

I’m curious about DougJ-BE’s view of Jon Spencer and Pussy Galore’s ‘s cover of Exile. I’m assuming an affinity for Spencer for picking this to post from elsewhere, and anyone who even only reads the thread titles knows of his love of Exile on Main Street.

Up until the fang album I was a pretty big JSBX fan. Aside from the magic that occasionally erupted from little-known bands in dive venues, catching JSBX at Toad’s Place many years ago was probably the best live show I’ve ever seen.

@JGabriel: Why? @JGabriel: Why not? People still have a voice (for now). If they can convince people like my father, they may still have a chance. My dad doesn’t seem to think unions are a force for good, even thought they paid for his unemployment checks when I was a teenager and they paid for his health insurance when he needed triple bypass surgery (my mother was/is a government union worker[teacher]/union worker with a pension). I am trying to convince him, even though my mom seems to have given up).

    Why? Why not?

Historically, the networks have been very leery of accepting political ads during the Super Bowl. For instance, this 2004 ad from Move On was rejected by CBS for being political. Not “too” political, but for being political at all.
