I meant this as an antidote to the Madonna halftime show. From JPK as always, but WordPress eated it at the time.
Boss Hog, “Ski Bunny” (1995)
This is my favorite song of all the Jon Spencer projects that I know, from the second, self-titled Boss Hog album. In typical Spencer fashion it lopes along at top speed, sounding at times like the players can barely keep up with one another. It’s full of good jokes even for as short as it is. I like the way it switches up expectations on the swearing, turning on a single word to convert it from a predictable moment of postpunk ragegasm into a hilarious junior high school plaint—and then going back again on that later.
Update. Weird, I can’t watch it, I was able to watch it before.
Let’s make this a Super Bowl open thread if we need another.

Just me, or everyone?

They say that Texas is a whole other country…
scav
Well, if we’re now importing things from Detroit, maybe that explains it.
West of the Cascades
Whatever country the video is available in, it is not Oregon.
Soonergrunt
Okies really do live in a different world. Now apparently we’re in a different country as well.

Canada is DENIED.

I know it is illogical to root for one car manufacture over another, but I’ve been conditioned my whole life to be a Ford man. That being said, I think Chrysler’s adds highlighting them being from Detroit and all that supposedly entails has been a stroke of genius. And generally I hate car adds. So this marketing scheme has overcome two of my default positions.
Wag
Denied in Colorado, as well.

Was on my way to sleep, but can’t go the sleep yet! Last scene of Dirty Dancing on ABC Family coming up. Gotta watch Baby and Johnny do that final dance.

Steeplejack
Denied in Atlanta as well. Here’s a live version of the song. Doesn’t sound that good to me, but I’m very old and unhip.

Thanks for that Can’t Explain link! I have a feeling I’m going to waste the rest of my night cruising his list of 100 songs and travelling through time listening to stuff I haven’t heard forever.
89. Bran Van 3000. Flashback: 20something, sick of living on an island, about to move back to the States (but I didn’t know it). Funny how a song can trigger memories like that.

I blame you for this tonight DougJ, you switched to that name before the Jets game and the Pats lost, you kept from it up till the bowl but then broke out the hex for the big game and suddenly Brady’s giving the Giants 2 points with the first play of the game for the offense.
Mnemosyne
I got through my cooking class with all of my digits intact AND I found a knitting book for $15 that’s running well over $200 online. So I had a good Superbowl Sunday.
Was there some kind of game that also happened today?
Three-nineteen
Wow -, I am amazed but not surprised that Eastwood made this commercial. I expect this to play in many Midwest areas with great effect. I hope my father (a retired car saleseman) will see this and be convinced.
burnspbesq
The Giants winning takes away some of the bad taste from earlier in the day, but not all of it. How the fuck to you lose to Miami? At home? This is turning into a trying season for Dookies.

Wow, a Jon Spencer reference on BJ! Great record. If I had a nickel for every minute I spent smoking cigarettes and listing to Boss Hog, Pussy Galore, and Blues Explosion in my 20s ….
MikeJ
I’m curious about DougJ-BE’s view of Jon Spencer and Pussy Galore’s ‘s cover of Exile. I’m assuming an affinity for Spencer for picking this to post from elsewhere, and anyone who even only reads the thread titles knows of his love of Exile on Main Street.
burnspbesq
Oh, also too, a heads-up for Dead fans. If you have a decent vinyl rig, you definitely want the remastered vinyl edition of Europe ’72. It is indescribably good.
MikeJ
@MikeJ: Grrr. I should know better than to mention the Galore side project from Mr. Spencer. FYWP, FYWP, FYWP.

Up until the fang album I was a pretty big JSBX fan. Aside from the magic that occasionally erupted from little-known bands in dive venues, catching JSBX at Toad’s Place many years ago was probably the best live show I’ve ever seen.
Elizabelle
@sloan:
It’s a great site. Got it bookmarked.
Catching up on the Puppy Bowl.
MikeJ
@Mnemosyne:
I would have been happy had you told me Chelsea would tie Man U had I not seen them ahead 3-0 before two penalty shots and a very pretty goal. Tying when it’s not expected: good. Blow a three goal lead and winding up with a tie: sputter splutter I have no words.
JGabriel
@Three-nineteen:
I was very surprised that such a — not overtly, but not subtly either — political ad was able to get aired during the Super Bowl.

Cacti
In preparing my Super Bowl feast, I learned today that Red Oak is a terrific smoking wood for beef.
Svensker
That was a fun game. Heh.
Poika
Saw the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion in Chicago on the Now I Got Worry tour-one of the most energetic shows I’ve ever seen.
JGabriel
@Elizabelle:
What the flipping heck is a Puppy Bowl?
(Note how I didn’t write “fucking hell” because puppies. So it’s a family safe comment.)
.
Mnemosyne
@JGabriel:
Mmmmmaybe. First, I have to make the sweater pattern I bought it for. And maybe a few other that are in it, too.
Yes, the reason it’s a collector’s item is that the people who have it generally don’t want to give it up.
Little Boots
@Svensker:
there was a game?
Mnemosyne
@Elizabelle:
We stopped on Kitty Half-Time and Keaton was enthralled.
murakami
Wow, I hadn’t thought of Boss Hog in ages. Saw them w/Cibo Matto at the Bottleneck in Lawrence. Tight loud crazed show. Loved it. Cibo Matto was also really beautiful fun weirdness with a very bouncy Sean Lennon.
Scary to think about how long ago that all was.
joeyess
Due to my job, that was the first Superbowl I’ve watched with audio in nearly 20 years.
It was also the worst Superbowl I’ve seen in a long time.
I should have gone to work.
JGabriel
@Cacti:
I did a double take there, because I first scanned that last word as ‘weed’.

Little Boots
So is John’s dad okay?
amk
Two days and they’re still counting clark county ? Guess there were gazillion votes to count. Or the rethugs really really suck at this game.
Elizabelle
@JGabriel:
It’s on Animal Planet for about another half hour. Cute puppies running toys around, sometimes in to the end zone. (Think they score whichever end zone they hit.)
They have a water bowl cam.
No Cee Lo, regrettably.
Little Boots
so, hope he’s okay. hope John’s okay too, for that matter.
Mino
@JGabriel: And here I thought Eastwood was a take-no-prisoners wingnut. Sure sounds like an endorsement for the second round of somebody not named Mittens.
Three-nineteen
@JGabriel: Why? @JGabriel: Why not? People still have a voice (for now). If they can convince people like my father, they may still have a chance. My dad doesn’t seem to think unions are a force for good, even thought they paid for his unemployment checks when I was a teenager and they paid for his health insurance when he needed triple bypass surgery (my mother was/is a government union worker[teacher]/union worker with a pension). I am trying to convince him, even though my mom seems to have given up).
Little Boots
@Mino:
nobody likes mittens. nobody.
Mino
@Elizabelle: Did they have the mini-pig contingent? I forgot to check in.
Little Boots
@Three-nineteen:
with all due respect to your dad, what the fuck is wrong with him?
Little Boots
great. another morgue.
Elizabelle
@Mino:
They do have the mini-pigs.
And a tail-gating section (fans’ lounge) with a JRT.
Haven’t watched this for several years. About 45 mins is fine …
Little Boots
damn, is that how you spell morgue?
hell, where the hell is omnes?
Little Boots
okay, fine, I will entertain myself.

@Little Boots:
Here’s a post from this morning re John’s dad is doing fine:
“Dad had the catheterization this morning, and they found an artery blocked so they put in a stent. They found another artery partially blocked, so they are going to put him on medication for that.
They are going to keep him in the hospital until Monday.”
https://balloon-juice.com/2012/02/04/dads-ok/
He had some earlier posts up too.
Little Boots
@Elizabelle:
good. john’s a good guy I think. every time I’ve interacted with him on this site, it’s been weird, but he really is a good guy, I think, and I’m glad to hear his dad is okay.
Little Boots
and I think I really like the name Elizabelle.
Elizabelle
@Little Boots:
Oh yeah. And other than that, it is kind of quiet out tonight. Lots of threads, though.
Little Boots
SHEETS.
do people do that, cause there’s new thread.
Elizabelle
@Little Boots:
Ah, thank you.
Echoing in here. I’m thinking of winding down soon too.
They’re just cueing up about the 3rd rerun of “Puppy Bowl.” You may have no adults to interact with, but cute dogs abound.
JGabriel
@Three-nineteen:
Historically, the networks have been very leery of accepting political ads during the Super Bowl. For instance, this 2004 ad from Move On was rejected by CBS for being political. Not “too” political, but for being political at all.
.
Martin
Dear NFL,
Your halftime show was better than the game. Just think about that for a minute.
Signed,
A guy who watches one NFL game per year, and may now consider that to be too much.
Joel
@Martin: I can’t honestly comment on the quality of the game. I’m sure there have been many, many better ones.
However, if its immoral to watch football, the Patriots are doing a good job at getting me to quit.
FlipYrWhig
Why this bitching about the quality of the game? It was close throughout. Just that makes it an anomaly. I can remember a lot of 30+ to 13- games from my youth.

@wasabi gasp:
i was more of a Delta 72 fan myself.
