Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Everybody saw this coming.

I really should read my own blog.

Let there be snark.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

T R E 4 5 O N

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

“More of this”, i said to the dog.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Santorum way up in MO with a quarter in, up in MN and CO, but with under 5% in.

I still don’t see how Romney can lose the nomination, but who knows? Everything will be fine, I’m sure, just so long as voters are making appropriate apolitical judgements.

Update. Teevee calls MN and MO for Santorum.

I see the Romneytronic 3000 is currently running in third in Minnesota, and is only a hair’s breadth ahead of Newt in what little of Colorado has reported. If “Mr. Inevitable” comes in third in two out of tonight’s three contests, he won’t react well. And, as we all know, that inevitably leads to Romney sticking his foot in his mouth in hilarious fashion.

Seems to me the harder this slog gets for Willard, the thinner-skinned he becomes, and it’ll get harder for him to maintain the campaign’s desire to keep him away from the press. All in all, a weaker Romney presents himself as the beneficiary of Obama-hatred. At least that’s what I hope, ’cause I well and truly despise Willard Romney.

Romney’s campaign keeps making the point that these are all non-binding, but if the R’s award the delegates in these states in a different proportion to the votes, doesn’t that hurt them/Mitt with the people who bothered to vote today? Not to mention the Village will thrive on the horse race narrative.

It doesn’t matter to me which one of these clowns get the nod. Romney is likely to win the nom, but by the time he gets the requisite number of delegates, everyone but maybe his mom is going to despise the slimy motherfucker. The Obama hate factor will likely guarantee him 45 percent of the vote in a GE, and I don’t trouble my mind much over worries of him winning the WH, cause it will just mean the Mayans were right and were always right. At least about this half baked republic. With all the hot spots in the world, that could go boom at any time, we are so very lucky to have a smart cool customer of a president presently. Romney’s inability to seal the deal – even after Florida, even against a bag of bloviating philandering lard and an prig in a sweater vest who’s a national dirty joke – is really something to behold. Karl Rove’s Trained Monkey in 2000 would be back home with his boots up by now, and Romney is (as of this writing) getting swept by someone who lost his last real election by almost twenty points.

My precinct in Missouri, with a turnout of 5.78%:

    WBG SE-1/MONTSERRAT
    US PRESIDENT REP REP
    Total
    Number of Precincts 1
    Precincts Reporting 1 100.0 %
    Total Votes 194

    KEITH DRUMMOND 0 0.00%

    RICK SANTORUM 111 57.22%
    RON PAUL 14 7.22%
    (UNCOMMITTED) 12 6.19%

One rural precinct (well, okay, more rural) with a turnout of 6.04% gave Willard 8.54% of the vote. Santorum got 64.63%.

Voters don’t register by party in Missouri. After you sign in they ask you to point to a list for the party ballot. It’s quite amusing for the poll workers (who are designated by party) when someone they know as a strong Democrat pulls a republican ballot in these situations.

The rules they have set up are confusing as heck. The Denver Post says

This early stage in the process of assigning the state’s delegates for the national convention is “nonbinding,” which also could be another word for “confusing.”

More than 45,000 Republicans pre-registered to participate in tonight’s caucuses and another 22,000 went online to find their caucus location, said Chuck Poplstein, executive director of the Colorado Republican Committee. About 3,000 people have signed up to volunteer.

That could put the party on track to exceed 2008, when about 70,000 people participated.

At the meetings tonight, participants will take “straw polls” to find out which candidate is the preferred one. Results from those polls will be what the public hears later tonight.

The expected winner should be former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, but former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum from Pennsylvania is also expected to have a good showing.

But the process for assigning delegates doesn’t stop tonight.

Attendees at the meetings also elect two precinct committee people and delegates to go to the county assembly in late March.

The final consideration for the Colorado’s delegates will be made at the state convention on April 14.

ETA: That should all be in the blockquote, FYWP.

Beyond making matters look even worse for Romney, if CNN is correct that gives Paul a couple of delegates, encouraging him to continue and making it take that much more time and money for Romney to get the 50% delegate count.

Meanwhile here in Florida Obama’s campaign ads are already starting up.

Normally I’d say that a holdup in vote counting in a GOP contest means they’re figuring out how many fraudulent ballots they need to stuff in to get the right result, but I’m guessing this time they have to get more printed to cancel out the unexpectedly powerful surge of Santorum.
