I made the mistake of having coffee with dinner again, so I’m watching reruns on the food network. The beasts don’t care, though:
Worthless beasts.
I do love that “knowing” glance from Rosie, though. We’ve really been having a lot of breakthroughs the last couple months, and she is starting to be a really sweet companion. I knew it would just take time for me to charm her into submission.
By the way, I was born in 1970, and one of my fondest memories is my mother singing Dream a Little Dream of Me when I was a kid. For some reason, I also remember my dad spending hours rubbing my belly, trying to get me to go to sleep. Regardless, go listen to some Mama Cass and then listen to Adele. I think it is kind of freakish. Almost as scary as the fact that I hear my mother every time my sister Devon is on the phone.

Rosie has that “You had coffee at night again?” look.
ETA: Hey, Cole, no cheating – I said it first.
MikeJ
Tunch looks disappointed with you.
Mary G
Great pictures of all three, and Rosie looks like a different dog than the one who hopped into your car when you weren’t looking. Love the alt-texts.
Brother Shotgun of Sweet Reason
Ah, yes, I know where my pets are, sadly. Like Dorothy Parker, they’re in an urn in a file cabinet until we decide what we’re going to do.
On a happier note, our mutt had a face just like Lily’s. Although she was an escape artist extraordinaire, she always won us back over with that look.
And with the ladylike crossed front paws when she was lying down.
Sheesh it’s late. I put in a 10 hour day today and I have to get up in 3 3/4 hours and do it again tomorrow. And here I am reading blogs.
Michael Demmons
I am doing the insomnia thing as well. Episodes of How It’s Made on Discovery Science and Secret Service on Discovery Channel.
Jugular
Mine are in my bed, depriving me of leg room… and I won’t have it any other way.
John Cole
@Michael Demmons: I don’t think it is really appropriate to call this insomnia. I knew what I was doing when I had the coffee.

About 9PM Monday night here in NZ!
I’ll do a hard sudoku puzzle before sleeping tonight.
No TV, or computers.
This helps me clear my mind and I zonk out.
Mind you I’m awake again at 4:30am
Have a great night!

I agree, Tunch looks disappointed. Was the Great Feed unsatisfactory?
asiangrrlMN
I so love Tunchie. One boy is on my lap (not sure which). The other is gallivanting around. Just as I typed, the boy on my lap hopped off.
Soonergrunt
@Brother Shotgun of Sweet Reason: You have Dorothy Parker in an urn in your cabinet? Cool!
Can’t sleep. Every time I lay down, my sinuses drain down my throat and the irritation makes me cough and hack so bad I spit blood. Watching Star Trek, Deep Space 9 on Netflix.
reality-based
Well, Archie the Magnificent, the Charcoal tabby, is dozing on his accustomed stack of pillow on my bed, waiting for me to shut off the computer and come snorggle with him. Edith, the sleek black ballet dancer of a cat, is at the foot of my bed, chirping occasionally for me to come to bed, as well.
Tunch looks majestically sorrowfull. Also, he looks LARGE. I can’t tell from the pix, but does he have pale-orange front toes, as well as the charming pale orange ear splotches?
You know, I’ve been reading the blog for 5 years – but I never heard exactly how you acquired Tunch – he must have been an ADORABLE kitten.
Warren Terra
I heard on Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me that half of all American dogs are overweight.
Looking at that picture, I think that half of all Americans cats are Tunch. Well, half by mass, anyhow.
Elizabelle
Good pet portraiting.
That is all.
Debbie(aussie)
Beautiful animals! Lily and my dog Patch(a minature foxie) have similar shaped faces, but he is coloured like Rosie. Hope you are finaklly getting some sleep. Almost 8.30pm here in Aus, nearly my bedtime.
abo gato
So, so glad to hear that Rosie is working her JRT magic on you. I had high hopes that eventually you would come around.
Her alt-text is perfect!
I too was unable to sleep last night, but instead of getting up, I just flopped around in bed from about 12:30 until 4:00…..much suckitude here, I have to go to freaking Dallas this afternoon for an insanely stupid meeting tomorrow. All day, Valentine’s day to boot, won’t be getting home till probably 8 PM depending on my flight.
Truly insane. The meeting is horseshit on “Leading Through Change” just leave me the fuck alone.
Montarvillois
Rosie’s nails need a manicure?

From the shrill one:

Tunch’s paws are sweet swizzle sticks for your coffee.
amk
tunch made you sleep on the floor, didn’t he ? hi contemptuous look is a tell-all.
Citizen_X
I do believe you’ve got your pronouns reversed there, Mr. Cole.
“That bowl should’ve had more food in it.”
Oh, and note to abo gato: I must regretfully inform you that the weather in the DFW area sucks right now.
Betty Cracker
@abo gato: My sympathies. I used to have a job where I’d be required to go to stupid meetings like that. “Driving Results Through People.” Crap like that. What a load of horseshit, not to mention a waste of time, effort and money.
harlana
meds – i sleep like a baby – thanks for the pics, which are just overwhelming considering we’ve never had all three in one post, to my knowlege! what beautiful babies!
Schlemizel
@Betty Cracker:
Those kinds of meetings are an admission by management that they don’t have a clue how to manage.
On the other hand they often employ people with little or no skill at, what I can only assume, are well above average wages. So there is that I guess.
harlana
Tunch realized you love Lily more than him – that’s why he looks that way
harlana
i know where my pet is this morning, eating cornbread crumbs off the rug – i had no idea she liked cornbread – probably just cuz its on the floor
Joe Scarbutt will be writing some kind of shit on Politico now – not that I ever read it. but much ado about that this morning – and why the hell i watch, i have no idea and once you become famous, you never know who really loves you
sad about Whitney – i was never a fan of her stuff, not my thing, but she did have a hell of a voice, so talented but so troubled and too young to die, i feel for tortured souls with incredible gifts, some just never find peace here on earth
harlana
also, too, drink decaf!!
harlana
nice “touching” comments on the Fox News site regarding Whitney’s death.
there are a lot of sick mofos in this world. stay classy, Fox-suckers.
(snatched from digby’s site)
harlana
i did not know she was Dionne Warwick’s cousin – i love me some 60’s Warwick
harlana
hellooooo??? seriously, you peeps just stay up all nite and sleep all day and leave me lonely here in the morning
fine!! i can talk to myself just like i do in real life anyways
:)
JPL
John, You have a beautiful family.
DanielX
His royal rotundity….it’s Tunch’s world, y’all just live in it.
harlana
Lily’s ears always seem to be flapped back when in her pics, it’s so adorable.
harlana
@harlana: oops:
JPL
Whitney’s death was sad but can the news please mention the singer who won 6 Grammys last night which is the same amount that Whitney won during her career.
Omnes Omnibus
@JPL: There was a bit more to Whitney Houston’s career than 6 Grammys.
harlana
@Omnes Omnibus: Well, even though i wasn’t into her stuff, her music certainly was a backdrop to my younger years – i’d never heard of this Adele chick until this past year. Anyway, I don’t watch the Grammy’s – music ain’t what it used to be – yeh, get off my lawn, Adele!
;)
JPL
@Omnes Omnibus:
Whitney was a great entertainer and I certainly understand that. I didn’t watch the show and was hoping to catch of the highlights on the news this morning. So I’m being obstinate.
harlana
@JPL: i’m half kidding, she (Adele) does have a good voice, i just don’t listen to new stuff anymore, i just feel like i have to wade through so much crap to find a gem here and there, i discovered this after 2000 or so (is there some correlation with the bush presidency? hmm) just gave up, too much work, there is enough good old music to last me the rest of my lifetime anyway, just me, i’m weird that way. i really find most music today to be predictable and boring. and don’t even get me started on what is still considered “country” music somehow.
harlana
but, Bush years were horrible years for me personally – i really did take it all very personally and it was deeply painful to watch the waste of blood and treasure, i used to cry about the dead bodies, on both sides. well i guess it’s “waste” depending on whether you benefit. i also became very disgusted and disillusioned with the Dems. That, too, was painful. i felt somewhat betrayed. but then, i guess i had not been paying enough attention until then, when the impending war that i knew was blatantly unjustified, grabbed me by the collar and shook me awake.
BGK
We had a cold snap last night (got down to 40), so I had my Polartec fleece blanket on my bed. Even though the heat was set at 66, I had four cats absolutely glued to me all night. I really do think they can alter the local gravitational constant. True, it was 60 pounds of cat, but I shouldn’t have had to grip the window sill and pull myself out of bed this morning…
Rosalita
Love the Rosi-tude; is she batting her eyelashes?
Sad Iron
Keep it up Cole, I’m loving these posts mixed into the larger fray.
Violet
Oh, they’re all so gorgeous! Love them! Lily looks like the sweetest doggie in the world. Adorable. Tunch is so fluffy and I can’t believe how far Rosie has come since she hopped in your car. Wonderful.
AliceBlue
I think LIly has the sweetest little doggie ears I’ve ever seen. Tunch is looking like a grand old Sphinx and Rosie has bloomed. You’re a lucky guy, Mr. Cole.
Betty Cracker
@harlana: If I didn’t have a teenager, I’d probably be in the same boat (listening to mostly 90s stuff). But with all the tidal wave of crap on today’s top 40 (not that it was any less crappy when I was younger), Adele stands out. She really does have a great voice and writes her own stuff too. I was glad she won a pile of Grammys.
Rancher
John, I’m so glad Rosie is finally getting you trained. I knew she could do it! You will be much happier if you just let go and obey when she psychically wills you to do something.
Tercali
Longtime lurker 1st time poster. I’ve been humming “Dream a Little Dream” now for about an hour. I think my 7.5 month old son Lucca will appreciate a new (to him) song in my repertoire – though I have been singing “Close to You” by Karen Carpenter since he was born and have it down solid. I think my cat Max will appreciate it too. I was born in ’72 and grew up listening to all that good stuff. Anyhow, I enjoy your late night posts while I am up in the wee hours tending to the sleep usurper…
GARY CAMPBELL
Dude,
At the risk of getting banned……
Your dogs are ugly and your cat is way too fat and ugly too.
I guess everybody has to love someone.
I never did see what people saw in loving little dogs that only eat, bark and shit!
but life is life! I do, however, like your site.
Jill
Tunch has the “shit on you” face to end all “shit on you” faces.
