Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Everybody saw this coming.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Republicans in disarray!

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Let there be snark.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

The revolution will be supervised.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

After roe, women are no longer free.

I’m a little bit surprised about the wingnut freak-out against Sandra Fluke. As a generally uptight person, I’m hesitant to go here, but it seems so obvious: do Republicans really want to campaign against sex-crazed co-eds? If you outlaw sex-crazed co-eds…

I wonder how many male college Republicans have, do, or wish to engage in sex with “sex-crazed” co-eds on their campus?

Of that group, how many want to marry said “sex-crazed” co-ed and/or father children with said “sex-crazed” co-ed?

I’m guessing many want to get laid, few want to wait to get married and most don’t want to be someone’s baby-daddy.

Amazing how the crazies have full control over the Republican Party, to the detriment of the Party rank-and-file.

‘Want’? Yes. ‘Have been avoiding because it’s electoral poison?’ Also yes. This is Obama’s ultimate political martial arts move, driving his opponents so mad with hate that they do something stupid. And then something stupider. And then something stupider than that…

You have to remember, Doug, that they aren’t reaching for the under-25 set. Hell, they’re not even reaching for the under-30 set. But this plays well with their last constituency, older white people, and particularly older white men. The slut shaming goes to the whole “society is on the verge of collapse due to the libertine morals of the younger generation/minorities/women voting/etc, zomg!” thing that culture warriors thrive on. Since they see themselves as the last bastion of all that’s decent, this kind of thing will play well. Bonus points because it allows them to moralize about the younger generations without having to deal with the fact that their granddaughters are part of that generation. They are protecting their precious, innocent little girls from sluts and whores like that, after all.

I’d also note that any young people who are voting republican at this point are people who were ALWAYS going to vote republican.

Aaaaaand — Mitt supports the Blunt bill.

The Blunt amendment, which is scheduled for a Senate vote on Thursday, would permit employers to deny coverage of birth control or other services they deem morally objectionable.
    __
Romney’s position had been brought into doubt after tweets from a local TV station reporter suggested the candidate had objected to the proposed bill. The candidate’s campaign released a statement saying, “Regarding the Blunt bill, the way the question was asked was confusing.”
    __
To clear up any confusion, Romney himself weighed in, telling radio host Howie Carr, “I didn’t understand the question. Of course, I support the Blunt amendment. I thought he was talking about some state law that prevented people from getting contraception.”
    __
But team Obama didn’t buy his explanation, accusing him of a “flip-flop” and fiercely denouncing his ultimate position.
    __
“In one hour, Mitt Romney showed why women don’t trust him for one minute. It took little more than an hour for him to commit his latest flip-flop. Even worse, he ended up on the wrong side of an issue of critical importance to women,” said Stephanie Cutter, the deputy campaign manager of Obama For America.
    __
Cutter said Romney is “in a race to the bottom with Rick Santorum to see who can pander most to the far right-wing.”

Shorter Mitt: “I was for roundheeled sluts before I was against them.”

Well of course they do. Just like they campaign against The Gays, all while having secret gay sex with various guys they meet on Craigslist, like when CPAC is in town.

What they say and what they do are not the same thing. They’re happy to sleep with sex-crazed co-eds, those that aren’t secretly gay anyway, but they won’t admit it in public.

I’d go with the under-60 crowd. Folks born after 1952, were 18 by 1970 and probably were on the vanguard of getting their freak on outside of marriage.

Sure some of them are rabid right-wingers, who just hate Obama to be haters, but there’s probably a large chunk of them that remember screwing around in the 1970’s.

If their male, they may have daughters and realize the problems daddy’s little girl will have. If their women, they probably realize how bad this would be for most other women.

    @Linda Featheringill:
There’s something to that. My father is of the tea party generation and has had long-time friends that turned to its madness. He claims that they’re angry because they’re the generation that saw the hippies, Vietnam, and especially the end of segregation in their formative period. They felt helpless in a world where the rules were yanked out from under them and bad people (you know, like blacks) were rewarded and praised. This anger has festered in them their entire life, and it’s finally being vented without control. The sexual revolution IS one of the ways the world left them behind forty years ago.

EDIT – Note that he has no sympathy for this hate, it’s only what he sees going on in people that he’s known since way back then. Trying to talk sense into them led him very quickly to the discovery that they’re not interested in sense. They’re just angry, and anything they say is the result of that anger, not the cause.

Yet I some how do not hold it against college age girls today or expect them to be any less interested in recreational entertainment of the physical variety than the boys.

@Linda Featheringill: Not exactly–just that it plays well with the old white conservative crowd that has checkbooks.
There’s also the younger conservative male set who get to pass judgement on the women who aren’t having sex with them, as well as the younger conservative female set who are primarily interested in slut shaming the young women who are having more fun than they are.
But yes, it’s primarily playing to older males.

In other words, some of the most repulsive specimens of rightwing maledom available. And they’re going to go to war against the purported “sex-crazed coeds?” Good fucking luck, losers.

They’re living in the world they were warned about growing up, where a black man can be your boss (and the president, EVERYBODY’S boss!) and gays serve openly in the military, and young women run around wearing skin-tight pants with bare midriffs, and those are the modest ones, not the rebels! And if you accuse someone of communism, nobody younger than you gives a flying fuck anymore! They’re completely freaking out.

Wow. Check this out at Lawyers, Guns and Money:

The dice recommends where partners should caress or kiss each other, if they have run out of ideas in their long marriages. (Hands, as scandalous as that is, is one of the recommendations.)
    __
Customers can buy the dice separately, or in a “romantic evening package” that comes with raunchy underwear, massage oil and a book called “Theology of the body – blessed by John Paul II.”

There’s much more at the link.

@Omnes Omnibus: Well, and I want EVERYBODY to know that I am ONLY GUESSING here, but when I was a surgical tech, I wore size 8 gloves on top (outside) of 8.5 gloves. Since my glove size was right about an 8, putting the smaller gloves on second made both pairs easier to get on and also made them fit very snugly which made for better tactile feedback. This was common practice amongst thos of us who had to put latex (gloves) on a lot.
Perhaps, and again, I’m ONLY GUESSING you fricking pervs, but that might have something to do with it.

Also too, it’s your misfortune to be newly single right as the economy is improving in an election year, and hating on the ghey isn’t working for them anymore.

I’m a little bit surprised about the wingnut freak-out against Sandra Fluke.

The question this raises is how do we get them to do it a lot more. This is poison for the GOP and they just can’t stay away from it. How can we get them to double down, amp up and crank the slut shaming to 11? They’re completely out of control and all they need is a red cape waved in front of them to go galloping off a cliff at top speed.

    It’s marvelous.

@pragmatism: I graduated high school in 1977, so I was right in the middle of all that fun, pre-AIDS, and had at least my share of sex. What I’ve told my daughters, both now in college, is that no matter how casual you think it is, sex always means more than you think it does. That, and several conversations over the years about sex and relationships, has given them what I think is a more measured attitude about sex than I had at their age.

Also class of ’77. It used to be you could tell a lot about a person by how old they were in 1967. If you were 17 to 22 years old the Summer of Love probably hit you pretty hard one way or the other. I don’t think there’s been a comparable breakthrough event that defines a generation (or part of a generation) since.

Given various articles I’ve read over the past few years, wingnut and fundie attitudes towards sex are something strange anyway. You know – wetsuits, wide stances, Senators wearing diapers, crystal meth and rentboys, all that good shit. So their freaking over the prospect of young women having non-procreational sex, and worse, having the audacity to actually enjoy it….is pretty standard.

People, people, people. You are all misunderstanding this. It’s not that sex is bad. It’s that free sex is bad. You have to be punished in one way or another: unwanted children, STDs, birth control prescriptions, bar fines, escort fees, loveless dead-end marriages, rape…
