First things first, RIP Davy Jones. I liked this remembrance. What do you remember?
B-52’s, “Deep Sleep” (1982)
Here’s my shuffle prize this week—I loved this band all the way through Whammy! What sounded good to you this week?
Hey looka me, I can embed video. Here’s something else to kick around if you’ve a mind—artist, album, and/or song. I love the song so much I love “Highlands” (full 16:32) even more, which I rate with “Desolation Row.” YMG2MFV. So what do you like? What do you hate? Who’s fooling who?
Or treat as an open thread.

Not a fan of Bob Dylan.

By the way, who are you JPK? You new around here?
JPK
Oh I’ve been around awhile, mostly a lurker. I remember Cole before his conversion!
CaseyL
What do I remember about the Monkees?
Davy Jones was one of my first crushes. I think he’s also the first of my teen idol crushes to die. Which definitely feels weird.
I remember “Head,” a hallucinogenic movie starring The Monkees, and I think I’m one of maybe 10 people who ever saw it.

So Mittens response to Rush-bo’s bs is “it’s not the language I would have used..” really, that’s as strong as Mittens can get??? I hope the next question posed to Mittens is “well what fuckin’ language would you use guv’na”.
These men are fuckin’ cowards!

@cathyx: There’s always the My Chemical Romance cover of Desolation Row. It’s pretty impressive if only from the standpoint of how far they were able to take it.
I was 12 when an older neighbor brought his copy of “The B-52s” over to my house to play it because his turntable was busted and he had just bought it and wanted to listen to it. I was hooked. It was the first music I became attached to and was my first album.

Get advertisers to boycott Rush. That is the only way to get that fat blowhard to shut his fucking disgusting mouth.

@lamh35: I think the standard for GOP candidates is “trollop.”
Martin
@amorphous: It can work. It got Glenn Beck off the air. Too bad Rush has a gajillion dollar multiyear contract on paid radio, though.
MikeJ
@CaseyL: I love that movie. Lots of great cameos too. Written by Jack Nicholson.
When TV switched to digital, all the existing channels got a lot of extra channels, so most of them carry old sitcoms or infomercials on the people’s airwaves. One of the nets that exists solely to fill this void, AntennaTV, is going to have a Monkees marathon this weekend, showing every ep.
One of the other new rerun nets, MeTV, is going to show the ep of the Brady Bunch where Marsha invites Davey to the prom and two eps of Love, American Style with Davey.

For me, the band of the week has been Mott The Hoople so song of the week would be Violence (unfortunately the only good version of it on YouTube cuts the song off just as it starts to head over the cliff).
Anything by Billy Joel. I liked some of his stuff at the time but I’ve gotten over it.
General Stuck (Bravo Nope Zero)
would someone release my comment in mod. I have no idea why it got sent there. thank you.

I listened to Desolation Row last week when I took a day trip around Lake Pepin. The MN portion of that trip is on Highway 61, so I always grab that album for the drive.

Age 8,9,10, Monkees (esp Davey) were my crush band. Not until I was about 50 (!) did I find out that ‘Last Train to Clarksville’ was about the Vietnam War, that Clarkesville was one of the bases where troops were shipped out to Vietnam. Between that, the lyrics to Pleasant Valley Sunday, and Head the movie – Respect Monkees, deep respect.

Can anyone point me to a recent article about the ties between a Romney funder and the Paul campaign? I really need to rub a friend’s nose in it. And this friend is a conspiracy nut… except when it comes to Paul.
I read Pierce on Esquire, BJ, and Washington Monthly, but damned if I can find it there.

Cathyx: Which Bob Dylan? There’s about four musically distinct Dylans.
cathyx
@Martin: It’s not even the songs themselves, but his voice.
Joe Bauers
I certainly hope Rush Limbaugh dies soon.

@cathyx: Ah, I love Bob’s voice. It’s supple and creaky all at once, and he has killer phrasing.

Just saw rotating header on the top of the page and it said: “I survived the Breitbartcalypse!”
And then it hit me–indeed we did.

Bill O’Reilly attempting to defend Rushbo by doubling down on Rushbo’s lies…what a actual sexual harrasser defending a pervert…COLOR ME NOT SURPRISED!

@inkadu: Not the Christmasy Dylan.

Sun is setting. Sitting out in front of Peets on Lakeshore digging the end of the day. Nice. Strong coffee. Going to an Ethiopian place for dinner with friends. Wish i had a laptop to type on instead of this iphone.
Still, life is good.

@Comrade Mary: And that’s why there is vanilla and chocolate icecream.
Comrade Mary
@cathyx: Yep. More Bob ice cream for me! Whee!
cathyx
@Comrade Mary: And I’ll take a scoop of not-Bob icecream.

For some reason (other than it’s a great fucking song), my song of the week has been Fan Mail by the Dickies. Enjoy!

When I was 12 I went to a Monkees concert in Florida, where I was visiting my father, and had the surreal experience of seeing the opening act: the Jimi Hendrix Experience. I didn’t care about them, of course. I had a 12-year-old’s crush on Peter Tork. Later on, I realized what had happened.

@cathyx:
I am a big fan of Bob Dylan as a writer, not so much as a performer. For almost all of his songs I can think of someone else’s cover that I like better, although there are some songs that can be done only by Dylan, e.g., “Positively Fourth Street,” which I heard on the way to the grocery tonight.
ETA: But Dylan is the go-to guy for most of his later stuff, which other performers don’t seem much interested in covering. I guess I meant “classic” Dylan above.

A 60s band that got far too little play in the US was Taste. Here’s a fine track from ’67, How many more years. Can listen to it over and over and over.

Most Likely You’ll Go Your Way (And I’ll Go Mine) from Blonde on Blonde
came up on shuffle the other day. This afternoon I found myself listening to Randy Newmans’ Good Old Boys. Seemed strangely appropriate in a back to the future kind of way. Last night I saw Lester Maddox on a TV show…

Good song. Has me hunting for my CD of Keef Hartley’s Halfbreed. “Sacked/Confusion Theme.” (Sacked by John Mayall.)

@Steeplejack: Thanks! I didn’t read it there, but I’m looking forward to seeing my friend next weekend. He’ll be missing an arm. “Hey, Mark, what happened to your arm?” “I chewed it off after I read that article you sent me.”
smintheus
@Steeplejack: Thanks for that. Have never gotten into Keef Hartley, though I now realize I need to check him out.
Here’s the opening track from the Taste album, also pretty good: Wee wee baby.
Steeplejack
@smintheus:
Can’t vouch for all of Keef Hartley, but Halfbreed is wall-to-wall awesome. I always thought of it as a one-shot masterpiece, sort of like if Moondance had been the only thing Van Morrison ever did. I admit I was a little surprised to see references to at least one other Hartley album on YouTube.

That article has links to other sources. I thought I originally read the story in Slate, but this is what came up on the Google (first page).

The best new record I’ve heard so far this year is “Seasons,” by guitarist Anthony Wilson (you know him from Diana Krall’s road band). Four great players (Wilson, Steve Cardenas, Julian Lage, and Chico Pinheiro) enjoying each other’s company in a live setting. Audiophile quality recording. Available a a CD-resolution FLAC or Apple Lossless file for nine bucks.
