Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

T R E 4 5 O N

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

It’s a good piece. click on over. but then come back!!

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Disagreements are healthy; personal attacks are not.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

Is trump is trying to break black America over his knee? signs point to ‘yes’.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

So very ready.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

The fight for our country is always worth it. ~Kamala Harris

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

When I was faster i was always behind.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

Also, I thought the President’s speech at AIPAC was…about as good as you’re going to get from a President running for re-election and speaking at AIPAC, and I’ll leave it at that.  Stone silence on anything that referenced diplomacy, sanctions or peace, wild applause at mention of anything military, force, or defense-related.

Have at it.

Worst analogy ever: some British Catholic bishop:

Disingenuously, the Government has suggested that same-sex marriage wouldn’t be compulsory and churches could choose to opt out. This is staggeringly arrogant. . . Imagine for a moment that the Government had decided to legalise slavery but assured us that “no one will be forced to keep a slave”.

If only he could have also worked in the Holocaust.

what i find curious……..is Panetta and Obama sternly warning Israel off…and in particular Israel refusing to give its ally, the US a pre-strike warning.
No one is talking about that.
What is the first thing that would happen in an Israeli pre-emptive strike on Qom?
Every american troop, Xe contractor, embassy employee, CIA agent, christian missionary and NGO worker in MENA would be slaughtered without warning.
Israeli embassy workers and diplomats would be warned i guess.
Wouldn’t that instantly result in the US being dragged kicking and screaming into WWIII?

Peres is little more than a figurehead in Israeli politics, as the President can’t do boo and all political power rests with the Knesset. The person I’m pissed at right now is Tzipi Livni. Either she fully concedes to Netanyahu’s position (which is possible and makes me gag) or she is an amazingly incompetent party leader. Netanyahu does NOT have a majority in the Knesset. I’m convinced half of why he’s doing what he’s doing is because he has to keep sucking up to Shas to keep them in his coalition. With Livni refusing to build one out of the remaining unaffiliated parties (including two Arab ones) we’re dealing with Bibi. Shoot me now.

Thank you David Axelrod for finally putting this out there!

Obama aide: Limbaugh made ‘sort of quasi-apology’

…President Obama’s top political aide said this morning that Limbaugh made only a “quasi-apology” to the law student he called a “slut,” and that his initial comments were “predicated on a lie.”

“The lie was that somehow she was asking that taxpayers pay for contraception,” Axelrod said on ABC’s This Week. “The policy is that in basic insurance policies, contraception — contraceptive services, birth control, should be included.”

Axelrod added, “Even in his sort of quasi-apology last night, Mr. Limbaugh continued that falsehood, and it needs to be challenged.”…

posting this here from an earlier thread cause rarely do I ever say “I agree with George Will”!

George Will Mocks ‘Depressing’ GOP Response To Rush Limbaugh
George Will Mocks ‘Depressing’ GOP Response To Rush Limbaugh

Conservative columnist George Will on Sunday tore into top Republicans for their tepid response to Rush Limbaugh’s smear of Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke, declaring that the GOP is “afraid” of the radio host.

“It would’ve been nice if they had shared that with the larger public, the Republican leaders,” Will said on ABC’s This Week. “Instead, Mr. Boehner comes out and says, Rush’s language was inappropriate. Using a salad fork for your entree, that’s inappropriate. Not this stuff. I mean, and Rick Santorum says well, what he says was absurd, but an entertainer is allowed to be absurd. No. It is the responsibility of conservatives to police the right in its excesses, just as the liberals unfailingly fail to police the excesses in their own side. And it was depressing, because what it indicates is that the Republican leaders are afraid of Rush Limbaugh. They want to bomb Iran, but they’re afraid of Rush Limbaugh.”

I give credit where credit is due…that line ” They want to bomb Iran, but they’re afraid of Rush Limbaugh.” is a very good turn of phrase…props to George Will for that.

    Gotta love Ron Paul…

Ron Paul: No Aid for Tornado Victims

“The people who live in tornado alley, just as I live in hurricane alley, they should have insurance,” GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul said Sunday, just a day after a string of deadly tornadoes touched down in five states, killing at least 38 people. Say what you will about the Texas representative, but you can’t accuse him of being inconsistent, as he stood by his libertarian views on CNN’s State of the Union talk show, insisting that the new victims shouldn’t receive any emergency federal financial aid. “There is no such thing as federal money,” Paul said. “Federal money is just what they steal from the states and steal from you and me.”

Oh, but hey…noun, verb, “war on drugs” or whatever

I take this shit personally, as a Katrina survivor. I’m not kidding, when I tell you that my current relative ease and stress free lifestyle in owed in large part to FEMA and the help given to me and my family by the Fed government. I lost my car and my apartment thanks to Katrina and we had renters insurance. It’s thanks to FEMA that I was able to rent my first apartment here in DFW while I looked for a job and it’s the reason I was able to buy a car so that I could broaden my ability of getting around DFW and therefore being able to broaden my job hunt. That car BTW, I have today, I finished paying for it last month and now I own it. It’s the first actually bit of property I own and don’t rent.

“FU” Ron Paul and I don’t mean “forget u”

I think the jelly bean thing is a bit silly. Not sure their assumed percentages will hold as the primary season continues and not sure the “super” delegates would be willing to rock the boat. I think Romney’s got the nomination down pat. It’s just a matter of whether he can get it in a way that convinces the media and public that he’s a strong candidate or if he falters and comes in as a weak one. The nomination itself is probably all but certain. I think the piece comes off a bit as yet another example of people in the media loving them a horse raise cuz it makes a good story. But it has more to do with the sort of stories they like to tell than what’s really going on.

I just talked to him (can’t be at the hospital because we’re having satellite tv installed today) and he tells me they are giving him another. His physical therapy is going very, very well. She makes a crucial mistake in that video when she conflates Romney’s percentage of the VOTE in the first twelve states with Romney’s percentage of the DELEGATES. At about 3:00, she says he needs half the DELEGATES in the remaining proportional states, but so far he’s only gotten 36% of the VOTES. True, he’s only gotten in the 36% range of the vote, but he’s gotten half the delegates, and he’s on track to get enough of the delegates for the nomination. He’ll probably get all of the delegates in Virginia, for example.

What Yutsano said. They’ve also likely got a drain in his knee and are closely monitoring blood/fluid loss and trying to compensate for that.

The body has a lot going on just trying to compensate and repair the trauma from surgery. Topping off with a pint our two of fresh juice if he’s a bit low is just less bodily resources diverted from repairing damage/intrusiveness from surgery and fighting off any potential infection.

@geg6: OK, I’m not a doctor and obviously don’t play one on the internets. Also obviously, a lot of factors we don’t know are in play. How many indicators here does he match:

The amount of blood loss in a primary cemented total knee arthroplasty (TKA) seems to vary in different reported studies. We carried out a prospective study to determine the factors affecting the peri-operative blood loss, hidden blood loss and blood transfusion requirements in a primary cemented total knee arthroplasty. The factors analysed were gender, diagnosis, tourniquet time and body mass index (BMI). We included a total of 66 consecutive patients who underwent primary TKA by a single surgeon (A.M). There was significantly more peri-operative blood loss in male patients than in females (p=0.001, Student’s t test). The patients with rheumatoid arthritis did not show any statistical difference in peri-operative blood loss compared with that in patients with osteoarthritis. The tourniquet time and the surgical time showed a positive correlation with peri-operative blood loss. The BMI did not show any correlation with peri-operative blood loss. The incidence of blood transfusion was significantly higher in patients with rheumatoid knees as their pre-operative haemoglobin value was low. The amount of hidden blood loss in our series was 38%. We concluded that gender and tourniquet time plays a role in blood loss in TKA, but diagnosis (advanced osteoarthritis [OA] or rheumatoid arthritis (RA) does not. The blood transfusion depends on both pre-operative haemoglobin value and intra-operative blood loss. The post-operative transfusion trigger can be brought to 8.0 g% in a haemodynamically stable patient.

God damn it, I’m sick of this shit:

Voters in Ohio and Vermont are now getting calls from former First Lady Barbara Bush on behalf of Mitt Romney. Via the Washington Post, here’s the script for the Ohio call:

Hi, this is Barbara Bush calling from Romney for President on behalf of my friend, Mitt Romney. The Ohio Republican Primary is next Tuesday, so I’m calling to remind you to vote for Mitt. I’m supporting Mitt for one simple reason: America cannot survive four more years of Barack Obama, and Mitt is the man to lead America, and we need him now.

I realize Barbara Bush is a disgusting, vindictive old bat with no more dignity or restraint than that other corpulent turd we’ve all been talking about this week, but when is somebody going to come out and say that this “America cannot survive” Barack Obama routine is, if not actually treasonous, at least a not-too-subtle instigation to treason?

@rikyrah: I used whole wheat pasta. Low fat, low cal Sharp cheddar, mild cheddar and 2% velvet a cheese with skim milk. I’m only cooking for myself, so I make exact serving measurement i.e. 1 cup skim milk, and them I used 1/2 servings of the cheeses instead and of course portion size. So the whole pan of Mac and cheese is like 2000cal, but divided into 6-8 portions each lowers caloric intake and the only fat cal is from the cheeses.

It came out really well with very cheesy goodness

    @lamh35:

There is no such thing as federal money,” Paul said. “Federal money is just what they steal from the states and steal from you and me.”

This is the part of the Paulite world-view that infuriates me the most. I would respectfully refer Rep. Paul to the first three words of the preamble to the Federal Constitution. The Federal Government exists because we chose to have it. Federal money is what we voluntarily give to the Federal Government.

For someone who professes to care about the Constitution, Rep. Paul sure doesn’t understand it.

    @geg6:

But why would he need a transfusion at this late date?

We’ve been hoping this day would never come, but I’m afraid it has. I hate to break this to you, but your John is a vampire now. It’s okay – he still loves you, and nothing needs to change. Well, other than the whole going out in daylight stuff, and what coupons you clip for the grocery store, but aside from that it’s all going to be fine.

Bibi is trying to fuck up a second term for Obama because he knows that if Obama wins hes going to bitchslap Israel into a two state solution.
But Bibi got righteously served with the Jeffrey Goldberg interview.

If you are not watching Illinois State-Creighton, you are missing a really great game and the essence of March.

(I saw Jeremy Lin today, too. All that needs to be said is that before he came, the Knicks didn’t have a season, and now they do.)

But the real question is why is his hemoglobin level dropping?

I would call the doctor and see what’s happening. It might not be serious at all.

Mitt Romney’s 2009 Op Ed on health care reform has been making the rounds in conservative circles because it called for a federal mandate to buy insurance, but what strikes me is the closing paragraph:

Republicans are not the party of “no” when it comes to health care reform…. Republicans will join with the Democrats if the president abandons his government insurance plan, if he endeavors to craft a plan that does not burden the nation with greater debt, if he broadens his scope to reduce health costs for all Americans, and if he is willing to devote the rigorous effort, requisite time and bipartisan process that health care reform deserves.

Mitt Romney, despite years of working at Bain Capital where you would think he might have learned something about turning around troubled companies, predicted that the automobile industry bailout wouldn’t work. And now he’s demonstrated that he doesn’t understand Republican politicians, despite being one himself. Is there any topic on which Romney isn’t clueless?
