You really have to watch this 15 minute CNN piece to fully appreciate the Breitbart gang’s flop sweat:
And then the idiot woman claiming the tape was not available in 2008. You could almost feel Soledad O’Brien want to choke someone out, and it really is amazing how Joel Pollack and those like him were drawn to Breitbart. In case it comes up at a water cooler, watering hole, or dinner party near you, here is a link to the Wikipedia entry on “Critical Race Theory,” an academic legal debate that seems to have enflamed the Breitards. (N.B. Wikipedia itself notes that the entry has “multiple issues.”)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_race_theory
Notable in the CNN clip (and I watched the exchange as it occurred this morning) was the remark by panelist Errol Louis, himself the host of a nightly political affairs show on NYC’s cable channel NY1, that Breitbart’s organization attacked Derrick Bell posthumously. Besides addressing the cowardice of their tactic, Louis effectively demolished any claim to newsworthiness of this alleged expose.

The whole point of the clip is to make Obama the tool, or the product, of a black radical / ivory tower nexus. It’s a painfully late-’80s early-’90s frame of reference. See also Allan Bloom’s Closing of the American Mind, one of the Robert Bork books, and the original Dinesh D’Souza book. Railing against “critical race theory” and “critical legal studies” are smack in the center of that moment.
I was in college from 1988-92. It’s totally of that moment’s campus conservative zeitgeist. That’s why it’s not playing in the second decade of the 21st century. It’s ancient fucking history. It’s like saying Obama went to a Karen Finley performance-art event.

A little context about the journalist here:
She is obviously not intelligent enough to know that the Derrick Bell was full of crap when he talked about the legal system systematically mistreating minorities. Thank god for smart guys like Pollack – who went to Harvard Law and seems to have not learned much from the experience. BTW, at Harvard he was an acolyte of Dershowitz, so he is one to talk about the pernicious effect of insular minority groups organizing themselves in opposition to the dominant culture.

MINI-BART: I’m not racist so stop calling me that. And I’m not afraid of black people. In fact, I’m not even sure blacks are people to begin with. There ought to be a quota system for civil rights violations. MKL is the only non-scary black man in history.
SGT. CARTER: I’m gonna say something just as stupid as you and that’s gonna bring you up short.
MINI-BART: (IS BROUGHT UP SHORT)
SGT. CARTER: I’m just being a bro, bro, except we’re white, so we’re white bros, bro.
MINI-BART: That’s exactly what Andrew Breitbart… uh… (fuck, how the hell do I even bullshit on whatever the hell that guy just said?)
CLUELESS BLACK WOMAN: I don’t understand how the time-space continuum works!
O’BRIEN: Is it me? It’s them right?
CLUELESS BLACK WOMAN: I don’t understand how documentaries are edited either! And I’m a “news anchor!”
O’BRIEN: Black guys hugging creeps you out?
SGT. CARTER: White bros hug bros too, you know.
BLACK HARVARD GRAD: I know my ass from my elbow, and let me tell you, Harvard professors are some boring shit. Now move along with your toy reality distortion gun there sonny.
CLUELESS BLACK WOMAN: I know the tape is insignificant, but we should have put it on the air so that the American people could decide for themselves it was insignificant. And red meat is yummy!
O’BRIEN: You lot are so stupid I actually wanna go back to Mini-Bart. And that’s saying something. So dude, how will I be kicking fragments of your skull into your windpipe in the coming days and weeks?
MINI-BART: I still haff my teeff! See? (SHOWS GUMS)
O’BRIEN: (KICKS GUMS DOWN THROAT)
MINI-BART: When I accuse people of having radical racist views, you’re not allowed to bring race into it.
O’BRIEN: Dude, people are laughing at you! Laughing! You’re a clown!
MINI-BART: I have no idea what minority means.
O’BRIEN: I’m sorry, I couldn’t hear you over the laughter from the control room in my earpiece. So, what delusions are you working on next?
MINI-BART: The VETTING is nigh! Repent! And I’m so crazy that I’m going to dare you to kick my tongue down my throat.
O’BRIEN: Oh, believe me, I’ll be looking forward to that.

Amusing note about the junior Breitbarts… per LGF they have reconfigured the Big*.com sites to the effect of rendering inoperative all the links that have ever been made to them in the past.
They have wrecked the place as thoroughly as any hacker might have wanted to.

He has …issues, clearly, and is a sad, frustrated creature. When he first showed up, just about every comment from him alluded to JC as some kind of proto-libertarian, but I rarely (if ever) saw links from him to back up the nonsensical claim. Ditto for subsequent nonsensical claims.
I assume his continued postings here are a cry for attention. But it’s only when that is combined with the unprovoked nastiness and unsubstantiated bullshit that makes him particularly irksome. I recommend scrolling or pie filter, depending on your preference.

@Xenos: Fascists? You don’t even know what the word means. I think one of the funnier parts of Soledad’s responses was when asked to define “Critical Race Theory”. Don’t you think? She doesn’t explain it!
different-church-lady
@Blogreeder: So basically you stopped watching at the 3 and a half minute mark. I dig. We’re all busy people.

Soledad has no idea what critical race theory is. She was fed that line from Wikipedia over her earpiece. Pollak made them all look the idiots.

TBogg, FOR THE WIN!
http://tbogg.firedoglake.com/2012/03/07/help-a-brother-out/
Blogreeder
@different-church-lady: No, I did watch it! I like Soledad. I remember her from her old PC review days on MSNBC. But, there’s a big difference between explaining something and having a dry definition read through your earpiece. If it’s just the “intersection” between race and law then why use “Critical”? What’s the theory? I know how liberals like to spice up phrases. Like, it’s no longer contraception but “a Woman’s reproductive health issue”.
Xenos
@Blogreeder: She did a fairly good job describing critical race theory – it is a fairly fluffy sort of academic exercise, so she can be excused for giving a fairly fluffy description (‘…it is about race, class, power, and how they interact’) as it is not worth much more description than that.
Contrast that to Pollack, who mutters the equally fluffy comment that it is about white supremacy, trying to imply that Bell wanted to impose black supremacy, and further describes it as ‘antisemitic’. Being a race pimp himself, Pollack assumes everybody else is, too. It shows.
As for fascism, Batista & co. were probably not exactly fascists. But most of their apologists in this country were and are.
Blogreeder
@Xenos: No, she did not do a good job of explaining it. This is what she said “Critical Race Theory looks into the intersection of race and politics and the law”. Sorry, that’s no explanation. Later on, there was more but I’m just talking about right then. It was funny!
Mnemosyne
@Xenos:
Considering that the people who were most pissed off about the revolution were in organized crime, I think it’s hard to argue that Castro and Guevara were wrong. When the actual Mafia is running your country, I think it’s justified to throw them out.

@Xenos:
She was incredulous the whole time. Sure she asked Pollack to identify the bombshell in the video–a good question–but she would cackle and let him dictate the flow of discussion, allowing him to play the victim and “prove” that the media conspiracy to cover for Obama. Which really is all he was trying to accomplish. He got to perpetuate a fake controversy without having to answer any questions and reinforce a shopworn meme about the MSM. So, win for Breitbart guy.

@Citizen_X: You would think that supersmart HLS grad Pollack would himself have a coherent definition of Critical Race Theory than ‘it is about white supremacy… and it is antisemitic’. He is the one who raised the issue, the burden is on him to define it correctly. Is O’Brien supposed to be versed about every latest wingnut-crackpot buzzword?
Xenos
@Blogreeder: I did not say she explained it, you dullard. I said she described it. Asking her to explain an academic legal theory that she herself did not introduce into the conversation is just ridiculous. She knew enough from a 30 second glance at wikipedia to know Pollack is full of crap. That is all she needed to do, and all anyone should expect from a generalist journalist.

@ruemara: Right on. It would be great if BigBreitbart.com said something and everyone ignored it, but they still drive news, they still need to be addressed head-on instead of ignored (as Kerry ignored the swiftboating, to his detriment). These scumbags need to be exposed… Once exposed, then you can blackball them (a la WBC, which I guess is why they moved on to the lawsuit grift).
Another Halocene Human
@David Koch: Great. Followed that link, checked out the blog, stepped into it in the most recent comments thread which is full of BrightFart’s keyboard commandos (“Wolverines!”) repeating half-literate talking points about someone they don’t even know. I mean, they can’t even spell Bell’s name correctly but pretend to know everything about him. (He’s near, I guess that’s all they need to know.)
ETA: That got me to thinking. Ever noticed how Fox News dittoheads always think that the current Democratic leadership is “the most leftwing member of congress”? Like, Sanders may be a socialist, but Pelosi is the radical leftist? Remember when Hilary Clinton was supposed to have been the most leftwing member of congress? (I mean, seriously.) How do these people say this s*** with a straight face?

Joel Pollack’s family is from South Africa.
Pollack portrayed his family as opposing Apartheid when he was running for Congress (IL-09).
Funny this is, the Pollack family left South Africa about the time Apartheid ended.
Pollack is also a Right Wing Jewish Zionist.
Pollack was raised to see the world as ethic groups engaging in zero sum competition. It was part of the country he lived in; it was part of his religious experience; and it seems pretty likely that it was part of his family’s values.
For his to come to the United States and stir up racial animosity is offensive.
Another Halocene Human
Why is nobody talking about the fact that Joel Pollak appears to have no lips? It’s really creepy.
Carl Nyberg
Pollack always aspired to be a huckster on TV. It was openly discussed that his campaign for Congress was more of a resume builder for getting on cable TV than a serious attempt to get elected in what is arguably Illinois’ most progressive district.

I mentioned that exact thing in a thread about Obama a day or two ago. Its what they do. If Bob Kerrey were the Dem nominee for Prez (Pasta prevent) he would instantly be THE MOST LIBERAL member of Congress EVAH! He would be a wild-eyed radical bent on destroying America. This has been the story since the Atwater/Rove type operations took over the GOP campaigns at least. Even Nixon didn’t try this crap against Humphrey.

Pollak is really the sickest kind of racist. He is actually married to a black woman yet he pushes this filth in public.

@Blogreeder: Critical Race Theory does look into the intersection of race, politics, and the law. Once you go beyond that thumbnail, each legal theorist went in a different direction so it is hard to characterize in more detail.

I mean who doesn’t like prime rib? WTF does that have to do with anything… These false equivalencies and then attacking the question is what the media needs to finally start pushing back on.
Kudos to Soledad O’Brien for finally stepping up (albeit slightly) to the plate.
It would be funny if it wasn’t so damn sad.
Carl Nyberg
@Someguy: The woman he introduced as his wife when he was running for Congress didn’t appear to be “Black”, but she was from South Africa.
She had dark complexion, but seemed to be of European descent.
Rafer Janders
What’s even crazier about this is the Breitbart folks’ insinuation that the video somehow lets us know something that we didn’t know before — but, uh, everyone knew that Obama was the first Africa-American editor-in-chief of the Harvard Law Review in 1990, and that Professor Bell was the first African-American tenured professor at HLS and was teaching there in 1990. I mean, this is all public knowledge, well known at the time, well known therefter. The only “scoop” they had is a video of the two of them together, but everyone already knew they knew each other and were friendly.
Patricia Kayden
There were slave masters in Brazil who were married to Black women, so that’s irrelevant.
Just like this video is irrelevant and says nothing about President Obama, except that he was always a great speaker.

@Mac G:
That’s the most worrisome part about this clip to me. I knew that Brietbart’s organizational suit would completely fictionalize Dr. Bell’s work and positions to bring out that ooga-booga that’s so important to the supporters, but Amy Holmes’ response. She appears nominally intelligent, but all the questions she asks are pointless.
Amy, if I may call you Amy, the reason that you don’t remember seeing this video and the reasons it was not discussed, despite being shown in 2008 (not completely! OMFG!!), was because just like today, in 2008 there was nothing to discuss about the tape. There is no there, there. It’s shit. What the fuck is there to discuss? It’s a distraction, and not even as good a distraction as all the Jeremiah Wright poo that the media (the MSM also!!) was happily slinging about. Sweet Fancy Moses.

I don’t know if you ever saw the SNL skit “Wake Up and Smile” on which the teleprompter for a morning chat show breaks down, and the hosts break down along with it, but that’s the basic dynamic.
