I was following the English FA Cup quarterfinal Tottenham Hotspur vs Bolton Wanderers. Five minutes from halftime, Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba collapsed on the field, and has been taken to hospital. No word yet on his condition, but the stadium has gone quiet and everyone is very worried. Referee has abandoned the game.

The other day, I saw a bumper sticker on a pickup in a parking lot that showed a picture of Obama and the words “Gas was $1.78 when I took office.”
I was soooooo tempted to updated it with “And before the economy crashed, it was $4.00.” I had a Sharpie handy, and there was plenty of empty space on it.

I really wish CNN would stop with the SXSW coverage.
Enough.
Y’all wouldn’t make it through August, anyway.

There was a brindle Boxer female who lived about a block from me when I was in grade school, she’d lay in the front yard and wait for a kid to ride by on his bike, she’d jump up and run beside the bike for a block or two, then turn around and go home and wait for another kid to ride by. She never barked, never bit anyone. She just loved to run along side bikes. I asked Mr. Hanson, her owner, why she did that he said, “No idea, been doin it since she was a pup.” No matter how hard we tried we could never wear old Susie out!
Betty Cracker
@Jager: It’s damn near impossible to wear a boxer out. I walk my two at a brisk pace until I’m about ready to drop, and they’re as bouncy as ever when we get home.
They stay puppy-like until the last, too. Our first boxer lived to be 12 (which is ancient for that breed), and he really didn’t slow down until he was 10 or so, and even then, he’d bounce around and play before collapsing in a heap.

@Amir Khalid:
Not to make light of the situation, nor to get overly pedantic, but – why do some people eliminate the definite article “the”?
I hear this all the time – “taken to hospital” vs. “taken to the hospital”.
Is it just a stupid American thing? We’re just slinging extra words in there?
Comrade Mary
@kdaug: It’s a Commonwealth thing, but keep in mind North American usage is kind of inconsistent.
We usually say “I went to school” not “I went to the school”. We use the second construction only if we’re making a point about going to a specific school. So while “taken to hospital” might sound abrupt, it makes sense if we’re not making a point of specifying a particular hospital, right?
Ruckus
@kdaug:
Americans waste a lot of words when, although they may be correct, they are not needed for comprehension.
Like that.
MikeJ
@Amir Khalid: The Guardian didn’t sound very hopeful.
Amir Khalid
@kdaug:
The definite article is not essential to meaning here. No one, even in America, speaks of going to “the” work or on “the” vacation either, do they? As for Fabrice Muamba, who is only 23, reports are that he collapsed with no other players nearby, and was still not breathing unassisted when they put him in the ambulance. Game abandoned with the score at 1 – 1.
kdaug
@Comrade Mary: Ah.
So an overabundance of hospitals?
Jager
When we lived in Boston I was having a St Patricks Day pint with an old Irish guy I worked with. He ordered us a shot of Bushmills. He tossed it back and said, “I got so damn drunk and sick on this shit when I was 16, I missed the state track tournament. Never had another drop of it until my 17th birthday.” Good old Billy G, here’s to ya old man!
Amir Khalid
@kdaug:
Also, too: Saying “the” hospital would, in this context, mean I was referring to a particular hospital. No report has identified the hospital Muamba was taken to; and not being a Londoner, I wouldn’t know which one is nearest to Spurs’ home ground.

Did anyone else watch Real Time last night? Am I alone in thinking that Alexandra Pelosi is a fast-talking idiot? So many words, none of which actually said anything.
And, in honor of St. Patty’s Day, my favorite version of Danny Boy, sung by Harry Belafonte.
Okay, my favorite serious version. It is hard to top The Muppets.

There is probably already a thread up on Drudge or Faux “Obama drinks too much”. “Obama hangs out with IRA terrorists”.

@nichole – I wonder. If I stopped watching all shows that invited on the children of pols or press mavens as people whose opinions I should care about, would I have any news and opinion show left to watch? I might be better off not watching regardless.

Here’s the video to go along with Obama’s outing to the Pub.
He was with his cousin 8x removed Henry from MoneyGall and the MoneyGall guy who owns the pub where Obama went in MoneyGall during his trip to Ireland.

Here’s one from CNN, but I think it’s the same.

Boy, people sure hate this Obama fella dont’ they. Maybe I didn’t notice, but I don’t recall people being as excited to see GWB outside of Texas or the Bible belt or GOP confabs anyone else?
Steve in DC
@lamh35
GWB got cheered in DC as well. Of course, he didn’t go to bars as he no longer drinks. But if you go into any political area you’ll get cheered no matter your party. DC lives off the federal tab, all of them are fine. And the partisanship is silly and nobody cares. Go to the Hawk and Dove or other political bars. Democrats and Republicans right next to each other getting tanked as hell and having a blast.
The bush kids were a sight to see stumbling all over the place though.

@Steve in DC: Is there no subject on which you won’t just declare that reality is what you would like it to be?
Yes, when one party routinely uses federal workers as political pinatas, tells lies about how they are overpaid, tries to cut their benefits, oh, and uses Congress’ power over DC to force social and political issues on the city that they could never get through back home and that are completely contrary to the will of the people here, yeah, sure, everyone concludes “partisanship is silly” and nobody cares.
Unless, of course, “DC” is just the young Republicans you hang out with, the college students you’ve mentioned, and staffers who will head home if their boss gets voted out.
But by all means, prove that it’s not all in your head; find some reference to GWB dropping in somewhere in DC in 2004 to cheers and excitement.

I broke out some records this afternoon. Been listening to It’s a Beautiful Day, Credence Clearwater Revival, Quicksilver Messenger Messenger Service, the Moody Blues and other late 60’s music. Sometimes I just want to hear music off of the real thing, those big, dusty, unwieldy old records. All through high school and college, there was this little used record shop in the town where I grew up. Whenever I had $10 or $20, I’d bike over there and spend a few hours flipping through the racks of battered records. Sometimes I’d be looking for something specific; sometimes I’d just be poking through to see if something leapt out at me. I’d take a chance on something I’d never heard of, and sometimes it would end up being a real find, and other times a bust. I stumbled upon Brewer & Shipley that way by happenstance, and I’ve never understood why they weren’t better known…
I don’t live there any longer, and the shop is gone anyway; I need to find one around here now. It’s been a while since I played anything on the record player, and I’d kind of forgotten how much I always loved doing it. CDs are great, and I love Rhapsody.com, but somehow, I’ll always love records best…

Such a beautiful day here in central NC! I’m supposed to be doing indoor chores (company coming next week) but I even spent an hour or so pulling weeds in the front flower beds, just because. The Carolina Hurricanes just beat the Wild 5-3 and Ky plays in the NCAA tournament tonight at 7:45pm! During the Elton John concert last night (awesome!), we discovered that Lehigh beat Duke in the tournament so we bought tickets to the games tomorrow in Greensboro to cheer Lehigh on (my guy went to school there). Oh, I wish all weekends were this GOOD!
Steve in DC
@Redshift
Good lord you’ve never even been here have you? Both parties and their staffs hang out at the same bars and do the same things. Nobody fights or quarrels and they don’t spend time talking about the latest fiasco on the news. They just don’t give a shit. If their boss gets voted out they’ll go work for another, politicians are a dime a dozen around here. Or they’ll go to work lobbying.
I hang out mostly with global NGO types, aka non profits in global health, my specific company does maternal and infant mortality it’s full of die hard Democrats. None of them give a damn if we run into some Republicans or lobbyists, we work right next to K Street it’s going to happen. Still get drunk with them, still hang out with them, who cares? Shit several of them date them.
Not everybody here is a Tea Partier or from the Great Orange Satan determined to turn everything into a rabid debate. Your work is your work and that’s that. Doesn’t matter if you’re a lefty or a righty. And nobody other than the most mentally deranged gives a damn.
You really think people are going to throw a fit over politics because they run into a congressman from another party at lunch?

If anyone is still interested: Reuters reports Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba is in stable condition after collapsing on the field at Tottenham Hotspur during an FA Cup quarterfinal.

@Suffern ACE: Right? This is two weeks in a row that show has had me yelling at the screen. Having seen that A. Sullivan is one of the guests next week, I won’t bother watching, so as not to make it three.

@Amir Khalid:
Further to this. BBC says Fabrice Muamba is in critical condition in the London Chest Hospital’s heart attack center ICU.
WaterGirl
@Amir Khalid: Yikes. I assume this is a pretty young, healthy guy, right? I hope he ends up okay.
I am glad they stopped the game, something like this is very different from an “injury”, where the game goes on. (At least in the sports I watch.)

Obama is drinking beer! Does this mean:
(1) He has special dispensation to drink beer to lull people into thinking he is not a Muslim.
(2) He is drinking fake beer to fool people into thinking he is not a Muslim
(3) He drinks foreign beer to show his hatred of America.
