Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

People are complicated. Love is not.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Republicans in disarray!

I need a cold shower.

I seriously want to renounce my gender so I can act on the lesbian fantasies I am having right now. WHY IS IT SO HARD FOR OTHER PEOPLE TO DO WHAT RACHEL JUST DID? She called a liar a liar.

“The too-big-to-fail institutions that amplified and prolonged the recent financial crisis remain a hindrance to full economic recovery and to the very ideal of American capitalism. It is imperative that we break up the big banks.”
Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas Annual Report 2011

    Letter from the President:
    __
If you are running one of the ‘too-big-to-fail’ (TBTF) banks — alternatively known as “systemically important financial institutions,” or SIFIs — I doubt you are going to like what you read in this annual report essay written by Harvey Rosenblum, the head of the Dallas Fed’s Research Department, a highly regarded Federal Reserve veteran of 40 years and the former president of the National Association for Business Economics.

She had Chris Hayes on for the next segment, and the two of them discussing the War on Women was also one of the smartest discussions of the issue you’re going to see on TV. How can you watch her and Chris Hayes’ show and then watch Bob Schieffer? There’s something about truth telling that resonates and won’t be denied, and she’s all about it.

“The Ed (Schultz) Show” is a much better example of hyper-partisan political porn for liberals. The difference with Rachael Maddow is that in any one on one debate with Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, or any conservative media personality you care to name, she’d eat their lunch and drink their milkshake, because she’s not just brilliant-smart (she was a Rhodes scholar), but she always comes to discussions deeply researched in indisputable objective facts to back up her viewpoints, and has wicked-sharp rhetorical skills to frame them with.

What I liked about that segment is that she avoided — probably with care — the modifier “pathological”, even though it seems to fit. Also nice to include the Newt clip, where dimwit Norah O’Donnell is mortified by the response, because it illustrates both the Village’s difficulty in dealing with pathological liars, and the way that even pols consider Mittens to be as familiar with truth-telling as he is with caffeine.

I loved this, but I also hope that the Democrats also hit Mitt hard on being gutless and ready to do anything the batshitinsane segment of his party wants him to do.

I’ve seen a few anecdotes from people who reported that they know other people who think that Romney’s just being smart about being the nominee and that he’ll be a nice, safe moderate as president. (Cue also the firebaggers who play the “not a dime’s worth of difference between Obama and Romney” game.)

I’m afraid the average swing voter, barely paying attention until two weeks before the election, has absorbed all the usual bromides: all politicians lie, it’s no big deal, they all flip-flop, no big deal, and if a party or politician says they’re good for the economy, then they probably are.

I am not at all complacent about the fall, because I live in a country that just gave that snake Harper a majority government and a city that elected Rob Ford, an ineffectual, innumerate bully who pushes the voters resentment button at least as well as Sarah Palin, as our mayor.

@AA+ Bonds: I’m sorry. At what point did ratings mean truth, honesty, or intelligence? I’ve always heard this argument from the right that Fox News is better because it has more viewers. So? Being bigger is not always better. And as for the numbers? When your primary viewing age is above 50 and all you have to do is sit at home and be crotchety about all the young person liberal jibber jabber, you watch Fox. If you look at Fox and their viewership, or any right wing blog, the most astonishing stat is the average age of the person using that medium. It invariably is skewed so much higher than those who use left-leaning sources because it is easier to be stuck in your ways and listen to people who agree with you and your views all the time, than it is to actually challenge your perceptions with people who think differently than you.

As for Rachel, she is an astute member of our society because she actually looks at issues, has her staff help her research them, and then she conveys that research in a clear and concise manner. Kudos for a fantastic segment and an excellent show on a nightly basis.

Because I can feel free to tell you right now, that if all she done is to misidentify a fucking handgun, then I wonder how anyone can ever meet your standards. She’s been to Afghanistan to actually speak to the folks on the ground, She’s gone to the gulf and spoke with the people getting their hands dirty during the cleanup, she’s bearded the talibangelicals in their C-Strat lair, she’s been respectful of her guests and when she makes a mistake, I’ve seen her make an apology, a real one, regretting the inaccuracy because she actually appears to care about being accurate and truthful.

Because one time maybe she got taken in on something, nothing else she says is worth anything?

I reading today how America loves, loves, loves the NFL.

I bet most people don’t realize how it’s a well regulated socialzt enterprise.

Stadiums built by taxpayers. Employees groomed by public high schools and public colleges. Shared revenues among the teams, no matter how small or large. Minimum wages. Pensions. Salary caps to prevent loony billionairers from cornering resources.

The NFL puts the red in the red, white, and blue and it thrives beyond any capitalist’s wildest dream.

Anyone notice how Sullivan regularly quoted Steve Benen as one of his common voices of respected members of the Left until he moved to Maddowblog?

The references to her that I’ve seen on the Dish have consistently referred to her as “smug”, yet there’s this:

I’ll be on Real Time with Bill Maher this Friday night – live from Los Angeles.

Bill Maher is many things. One thing I can count on him being is smug, even when I agree with him. It’s part of his appeal.

Part of me thinks that, given Sullivan’s predispositions, that his biases are showing, and that pointing out the inconsistencies in this regard is fair, and not based in untruth. The fact that he re-evaluates where he is from time to time is human, and he may come around, but I can’t help but find a gender-based schism here.

That he protests Maddow and no longer listens to Benen because he categorizes her reporting as smug and appears on Real Time regularly says something.

Rachel Maddow is the best interviewer on TV.
She’s genuinely talented at asking the right questions and eliciting an actual informative dialogue.
Her interviews of Rand and Ron Paul were just perfect, and beautiful, because she’s actually listening to their responses before she poses the next question, which is very difficult to do.
She’s asking questions, not directing a narrative, and when you listen, you recognize what you’ve been missing in TV interviews.
    I’m so glad she’s successful.

Even Rush Limbaugh questioned whether the remark was an error or a deliberate campaign strategy to send the message, “Don’t worry, we’ll do the right things to get the moderates.”

Who do these moderate voters expect to see manning the important agencies and cabinet positions in a GOP administration?

She’s very good for cable news (not intended as damning with faint praise) but she also suffers from a bit of self-satisfaction and did a crappy job when she had climate-change denier Sen. Inhofe on her show recently. I don’t think she was prepared for him to be so slick and dishonest. She also went off on a tangent about something wildly inaccurate he wrote about her in his book – but which had nothing to do with the subject – which made it seem like she was more interested in making herself the issue rather than nailing this douchebag on climate change. It raised questions about his credibility but it was utterly oblique. I felt certain that Chris Hayes would have done a much better job of dealing straight ahead with Inhofe’s BS. I have to admit, listening to that smiling shit I realized why people who I find totally abhorrent can get elected in certain states. (Hell, even Connecticut. Rachel says Ohio Art Company said they felt bad about moving production overseas, but “their hand was forced by price pressure from their major buyers.” Such as Toys R Us. (about 2:00 in video)

Found the NYTimes article Rachel referenced on Etch A Sketch’s move to China.

    Here’s link, Ruse in Toyland.

And where have we heard this before?

Mr. Killgallon and his brother, Larry, who is president of Ohio Art, said in an interview that their efforts to reduce costs ran out of steam by the late 1990’s, in part because of soaring health care expenses.
    __
An Etch A Sketch made in China and delivered to the company’s warehouse in Bryan was found to cost 20 percent to 30 percent less than making it in Bryan. Moving the full line to China meant laying off about 100 people.

Wage rates for union US workers, in 2000: $9.00/hour, plus benefits (the soaring healthcare costs)

wage rate for Chinese workers, 2003: 24 cents per hour, and Chinese minimum wage was 33 cents/hour

I think it’s two different approaches, the “smackdown” where the interview is attacking credibility, and an interview that actually forces the subject to extend his or her comments, ie: new information.
Maddow does the second very, very well, and it’s difficult to do, because she’s thinking on her feet. The second and third questions are a response to what the person said.
To do that, one has to be a good listener, not a good “talker”.

But when a post about her devolves into “lesbian fantasies” or comments suggesting that she “always” is “brilliant” I start to wonder if folks have critical faculties when they watch MSNBC evening prime time. Frankly, Lawrence often outshines her on politics, Ed Schultz – who gets shit on by upscale liberals – can connect to people that might not find Rachel as endearing as some, and Chris Hayes show is much better than Rachel’s if you don’t want to be spoon-fed mostly news and commentary you’ve more-often-than-not already seen if you scan the best of the internet throughout the day. I scan through Rachel, Ed and Lawrence and watch about an hour total of the three. I never scan through Chris Hayes show and actually look forward to it. When it went off into his not referencing her honestly in his book, I felt a huge opportunity was lost. He’s the Senate’s #1 Climate Change Denier. That’s what’s important about the guy. She raised my expectations and then fell pretty flat. That’s it. In fact, she spent more time attacking Inhofe on credibility than dealing well with his BS on her show. I like Rachel Maddow. She generally does a superb job for a cable news talker, but she’s not without obvious flaws that surface time and again.
