I’ve been running in paradox mode all week…. on one hand, I’ve been dealing with Buddy Holly’s Cryin’, Waitin’, Hurtin’ bopping thru my inner auditorium and well as Elvis Costello’s surprisingly upbeat Jack of All Parades whilst I go about jumping through the paperwork hoops for my new working gig.

Speaking of Elvis Costello, I stumbled across this very cool and affecting acoustic version of “Veronica” this morning that I’d never heard before:

Never was a big fan of his, but I like this a lot.

Bunny Wailer was my first exploration of reggae outside of Bob Marley (and of course, The Harder They Come)
Blackheart Man is one of my favorite reggae albums of all time. It would have been incredible to witness the kind of music that him, Peter Tosh and Bob Marley were making at that time.
To be a fly on the wall in their studio! Chris Blackwell found lightning in a bottle with those guys.
I’ll have to look into The Mighty Diamonds…sounds a little like The Congos. Early 70s I’m assuming

I love reggae, although there may be something to the theory that there are really only about seven basic reggae songs. Thanks for bringing this one to my attention.
I like that spiritual strain in reggae. Here’s Mikey Spice, “Alli Alli Ho.”
Also (not spiritual), Maxi Priest and Shaggy, “That Girl.” Not even sure if it’s reggae, although I first heard it on a reggae CD compilation.

Well, I’m just going to make a little pitch for a band I love, Scythian, who is crowdsourcing funds for a new album. They are very talented musically and nice people personally. Their recordings are fine, but if you get the chance to see them live (they’re not touring much now, but they generally do, a lot), don’t think about it and just go. A fun dancy time will be had by all.

I’ve always loved The Congos, so I’ll offer this as my song of the week.

I’ve had two obsessions lately: the most recent Within Temptation album, and assorted favorites from Apocalyptica.
Apocalyptica is probably one of my all-time favorite bands. They started out around 20 years ago as a unique Metallica cover band: they’re classically trained cellists, and they’d play Metallica songs in a classical style. It was pretty and novel.
Over time they’ve very much come into their own, writing almost all original music that uses amped cellos in a rock style instead of guitars. Most of their songs are instrumental, but nowadays they’re doing a lot of partnering with guest vocalists. There is nothing else quite like it in metal.
Posting a few song links, but I’m going to spread it over a few posts so that FYWP doesn’t put me in moderation hell. Keep in mind that not a single one of these songs includes a guitar of any kind–most of their songs use nothing more than a drummer and three cellos.

Apocalyptica: Toreador II (instrumental, w/Pasi Pirinen on trumpet)

I’m about to cue up Esperanza Spaulding’s new “Radio Music Society” for the first time.
Been listening to “Jenny Scheinman’s Mischief & Mayhem” a lot in the last couple of weeks. Her interaction with Nels Cline on this record is really something.
Also strongly recommend Robert Glasper’s newest, “Black Radio.”

For the sake of my blood pressure, I’ve tried to stay away from too many newspaper, rightwing blog, Fox News comment sections. But I bet there is a segment highly critical of the dispatcher for telling Zimmerman to not follow the teenager.

With reggae and Trayvon Martin on the mind, a few other songs come to mind:
UB40 – Silent Witness
Third World – 96 Degrees in the Shade
Heptones – Our Day Will Come
Morbo
@Catsy: I like your style. I find Fade to Black so much more powerful on cello.

OT: One suggestion for the mobile site so we never see it again unless we want to:
Get the domain for balloon-juice.net, or info. or even org. Install the mobile site on that domain (they are available, by the way) Just duplicate the site on the new domain, and be done with the whole thing.
The whole thing with Trevon Martin brings me back to the old stuff of the 1960’s-“A Change Is Gonna Come”, by Sam Cooke.

The song that’s made me laugh the last few days is Amanda Palmer and the Young Punx “Map of Tasmania”. Seriously, go to youtube and watch the video. I’m trying to get #TeamUterati to use it as their anthem.

@kasnarski:
Thanks! Heartbreakingly appropriate tune.
Can’t believe I hadn’t heard that Rasta Bob song before.

@Carnacki: “the dispatcher for telling Zimmerman to not follow the teenager.”
Although the dispatcher unfortunately did not say that.
He said, “You don’t need to do that.” The most passive order one might give.
Not even , “we don’t want you to do that” or “don’t do that”

i’m sure most of you have seen this by now, but i do believe it warrants it’s own post.

@RD: Hm, that’s is VERY cool, but I think I prefer the original. :) I might have to look into what else that group has done, though…
Gravenstone
@catclub: Actually, dispatch said, “we don’t need you to do that”. So not entirely passive, but agreed not a direct order to back off.

@slimslowslider: Sold.

Anyway, this was my earworm for the week.
It uses earworms as a metaphor.

There was a great PBS series in the 1990s called “Rock & Roll: An Unruly History.” Unfortunately, only the companion book seems to be available anymore. It was kind of like “Connections” from a music perspective and had some really fascinating stuff in it, like how girl groups helped pave the way for the Civil Rights Movement to be accepted in white culture. It’s probably on BitTorrent somewhere.
