Thanks to the generosity of Crown Publishing, I have a signed hardback of Dr. Maddow’s new book, Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power for some fortunate member of the BJ commentor community.

    I’m not a big smarty-head but I think I would enjoy a book on this perspective written by a woman who pretty clearly “supports the troops” yet, as I understand it, is an avowed liberal and an army brat herself.

    We get so much mawkish bullshit from the right about “supporting the troops” and all the cool pew pew pew aspects of weapons, but not thing one about war’s effects on the troops, culture, and society at large.

    I really look forward to reading this book. Thanks for letting me know about it. The Atlantic sometime ago had a great article about the modern military. Quite aside from the voluntary military, the general staff have become a highly insulated, hierarchical clergy. This is not to say they aren’t a very intelligent lot but they are largely military intelligent in a world that has a lot of messy, asymmetrical and politico-cultural wars. At the same time, the political classes worship of the gigantic military-industrial complex presages a bleak future for this country if current trends continue.
