A pic from our usual weekend morning hike. Max got in a footrace with another herd of deer this week. He lost, of course. Being a doberman he disappeared into the trees, screeched to a halt and sprinted back to make sure I was ok. Love this dog.

God knows what he would do if he ever caught one. A couple of times he cornered a baby squirrel or a very young sparrow, and both times he just bumped noses and waited for the terrified little thing to smooch him back. Not much of a killer my Max.

This is a great pic. Most of your Max pics are great, but this one is REALLY great. How the heck is he jumping with that log in his mouth? I’m never pissing off a Doberman ever.

When our 13 year old German Shepard was a young dude (actually until about 2 years ago) he would grab a log like Max and perform amazing feats of doggie action. Then one day while carrying a 6 footer he was stopped dead by two trees 5 feet apart.

My dog Turnip chases after deer in the forest around our house like a little 2nd grader chases after a soccer ball. She runs full bore to where the deer was, not where it is going. Then she stops, looks around with shit eating grin, and goes back to doing whatever.

2 unrelated things. 1. I have a possible terrier/chihuahua mutt who is all of 15 pounds and if he saw an elk he would try to take it down. Humans may be the only thing standing between Darwinism and small, Napoleonic dogs.
    2. As a follow up to politico’s claim that Ann Romney is the one with charisma who the voters are totally totally going to love, apparently today she said we need to unzip her husband and let him out. Most people seem to visualize that as a pants thing, although I for whatever reason picture it more of a Men in Black cockroachy former farmer thing. Either way, peeenis or body snatcher, maybe another day she’ll put those formidable campaign skills on display.

Maxpuppeh! He shows a lovely bascule (I could nitpick, but he’s not in a hunter class, so why?) and a cheerful attitude. More please.

@Raven: It seems the Bodhi is teh awesome indeed. And great to hear that Lil Bit is getting the good press. From the weekend, I am somehow not surprised that you’ve had multiple nose breaks. And I envy your bride her lengthy time in the garden. I’ll get started this weekend I hope.

The Supremes–they just keep getting better and better: “Justices Approve Strip-Search for Any Offense”:

The Supreme Court on Monday ruled by a 5-to-4 vote that officials may strip-search people arrested for any offense, however minor, before admitting them to jails even if the officials have no reason to suspect the presence of contraband.

And, lest you think it applies only to convicted prisoners in prisons:

The decision endorses a more recent trend, from appeals courts in Atlanta, San Francisco and Philadelphia, in allowing searches no matter how minor the charge. Some potential examples cited by dissenting judges in the lower courts and by Justice Breyer on Monday included violating a leash law, driving without a license and failing to pay child support.
    __
The Supreme Court case arose from the arrest of Albert W. Florence in New Jersey in 2005. Mr. Florence was in the passenger seat of his BMW when a state trooper pulled his wife, April, over for speeding. A records search revealed an outstanding warrant based on an unpaid fine. (The information was wrong; the fine had been paid.)
    __
Mr. Florence was held for a week in jails in two counties, and he was strip-searched twice. There is some dispute about the details but general agreement that he was made to stand naked in front of a guard who required him to move intimate parts of his body. The guards did not touch him.

ETA: I see Punchy mentioned it earlier.

My whippet loves to chase deer, but he’s so much faster than they are, it’s ridiculous. He likes to give them a 50 yard head start, zoom up behind them and run alongside for a little bit and then pass them just to show them who’s faster, then run back to me for praise.

@Steeplejack: Holy fuck. I smacked my hand into my forehead and said a bad word aloud when I saw the decision about the strip searches.

But now that I have read the details you supplied above, I am many times more upset. What the fuck is wrong with this country? (I am not a big swearer, so you know if I’m using the f-word twice in one post, it’s because i am beyond reason and well into anger and despair.

Big sigh. If the recall on Walker isn’t successful, someone will have to come find me. I will be the one sitting in the corner, rocking.

Nice to see you, by the way. Not sure where I was when you originally announced you had left your job, hope all is well. Seemed the like big box store wasn’t a great fit for you, so I’m glad you are moving in a new direction.

My pup is part bird dog. He snatched a baby bird out of air in mid-flight, ran in a giant half-circle, leaning over in mid-gallop to open his mouth and let the stunned bird roll back to the ground. Then he whipped around in a play bow facing the bird waiting for it to take off again. Which it did. Repeat scenario above. Second time the baby had the sense to stay put a second, which game me time to catch the dog. Looked back to see the baby finally fly out of there. I imagine a baby bird talking to a bird shrink somewhere, explaining these weird experiences it had when it was learning to fly.

@pinkpuppy: Thanks! I think that a lt of it is as simple as knowing how to meter exposure and some basic post-processing to bring contrast and color closer to what you saw with your eyes. I usually set my parameters manually to blur the background, freeze motion etc. Nice gear helps but it is not nearly as important as most people think. By far the most important thing is to know where your light is coming from and what kind of qualities you want it to have. For me the key was practice, read, practice and over time (a long time) I got gradually less sucky. I love digital because the practice is almost free.
