There’s a collection of videos from Wallace’s interview show in 1957-8 here.
__
Ayn Rand. Eleanor Roosevelt. Tony Perkins. Aldous Huxley. The Grand Wizard of the KKK. Fun stuff.

His interview with Frank Lloyd Wright is great, if you can see them through all the cigarette smoke.
pluege
how did he end up with a son that is a professional creep?
lamh35
saw this on twitter this morning.
Made me wonder if his son thinks about how his mediocre journalistic ability showcased on FoxNews compared to his father more stellar legacy.
This is def a case where the son has not lived up to the father n’est ce pas?
RIP

Nobody could make the sleazeballs sweat like Mike could make them sweat. It was a joy when he & 60 Minutes were in their prime, watching him set them up and them pulling the rug out so that they would fall on their fat faces.
those days are long gone now, no news outfit would allow its people to be so unkind as to expose bad actors on film (or video). Particularly if they are corporate “people” or wingnut pols.
currants
I used to love 60 minutes…but it’s probably been 20 years since I watched it.
OT, and I know people get annoyed with Greenwald, but have you seen this? The filmmaker’s a family friend; what she’s been going through is just insane, and she’s right–it must be so much worse for the people who don’t have the resources and knowledge that she has.
I’m thinking of Taibbi’s piece on police in private buildings, and the recent SCt ruling on strip searches, and wondering what to do about the police state we seem to be leaving for our children.

Not to speak ill of the dead, as Mike Wallace was a very talented interviewer and reporter, but it sure looks like he must have been a shitty parent given his offspring. OK, maybe he just didn’t have much to work with when it came to Chris.
At least Luke Russert is merely a willing tool.

Obama strikes again. Just a week after pressuring Al Gore to fire Olbermann he offs Mike Wallace.

@Schlemizel:
It’s not only that — the Food Lion lawsuit scared a whole lot of news organizations even though ABC ultimately won. Corporate lawyers don’t want to deal with any lawsuits, even ones that the company will probably win.

@MD Rackham:
It tough to blame parents for their kids. Sometimes its obvious but I have known so very good parents whos spawn are pure evil & some pretty shitty people who have saints for kids.
It would have been nice if he could have called the kid out or that the kid would have a Road to Damascus moment but I don’t expect it

one of the reasons we don’t have a roster of mike wallace’s is because the world needs to hear from the luke russerts and jenna bush’s of the world.
ironically mike wallace had his own skin in that game too.

One of the most exciting and interesting Masters’ in years.
Hawes
My favorite was his interview with Nathan Thurm.
Hawes
@Corner Stone: Where were you last year?
Chris
The old CBS dudes were great, but flawed, men. And most of em worked straight through the Golf Years. Lots to admire about these egotistical bastards.
The Insider (tobacco whistleblower story) is probably Wallace’s lowest moment. CBS corporate bested Editorial.
Forget Little W, tv-based journalism died long before he got there. Tough being Mike’s son, like being Sinatra’s singing boy.
Corner Stone
Kooocchh!!
Corner Stone
@Hawes: “One of”.
Plus, this leaderboard has some more panache.
Raven
@Corner Stone: Can you believe he threw that ball to the gallery?
and how bout that Dawg?
Corner Stone
What is this obsession here with mindlessly praising dead people?
Corner Stone
@Raven: If he wins…$$$
ETA, but I’d just give it back for a free invited round at Augusta National. More memories there than a couple grand for a ball I snagged.
Raven
@Corner Stone: Damn man, someone dies, people reflect. WTF-K?
Raven
@Corner Stone: The Shot Heard Round the World.
Corner Stone
@Raven: That’s fine. But Mike Wallace was a thug motherfucker of the old school asshole type.

RIP Mike Wallace. He was everything his kid isn’t.

@Corner Stone: There ya go. He fucked with Westy, that’s good enough for me.

Don’t mean to sound like a troll but Mike Wallace is not Andrew Breitbart or Dick Cheney and while Chris Wallace may not be Mike Wallace, do we have to criticize Chris Wallace today???? Seriously, leave the guy alone. It’s always pissed me off that Rush Limbaugh went after Bill Clinton in a big way when his mom died. Clinton’s a big boy and he didn’t need any help there but jeez can we just leave people alone when they are in mourning.*
*exceptions to this rule are Dick Cheney, GWB and anybody else heavily invoved in starting Iraq(yeah,I’m a hypocrite -shoot me.)

@currants: The fkg problem with border searches is (and I worked for 25 years for the goddam agency) that you are not covered by the Constitution until you are actually admitted beyond the Customs checkpoint. Prior to that, you might as well be at Gitmo. Sux, I know.

Not related to anything, there is a great article on GOS about the Republican War on Caterpillars.

Ed Bradley was cool. But no one could touch Mike Wallace.
Raven
@efgoldman: Um, I think I knew that.
Corner Stone
@Raven: Who you got? Oosty or Bubba?
Raven
@Corner Stone: Well, being that I’m a Dawg what can I do? I like em both but I’m pullin for the pup.

@efgoldman: Yea and I served in Korea and the Nam.
Anne Laurie
@David Koch: Your lame schtick, it ain’t getting funnier through repetition.
Raven
@efgoldman: Korea 67-68, Nam 68-69 so the jig was pretty much up.

@currants: I have been assured that no agency of a government lead by Barak Obama would expand the powers of the security state or diminish any of our civil liberties.
The woman must be lying.
Mnemosyne
@Keith G:
Damn that Obama and his time machine that allowed his DHS to start harassing this woman in 2006!
Keith G
@Mnemosyne: One of the many ill-conceived behaviors still being performed. If it was bad then, it’s bad now.
Your point?
East Coaster
And who can forget Harry Shearer’s letter perfect SNL performance: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/5999248/60_minutes/
Mnemosyne
@Keith G:
It’s not an “expansion” if it’s a continuation of an established policy, unless you’ve changed the definition of “expansion” to “anything Obama does.”
currants, if your friend lives in a state with at least one Democratic senator, I would suggest that she contact that Senator with a complaint about the DHS harassment. Sometimes senators can bring pressure to bear against government agencies that a mere private citizen can’t. If her both of her senators are Republicans, she can still try to get them to take up her complaint, but she may be screwed.
Mnemosyne
Also, too, since we’re on the topic, where’s mclaren to explain why she thinks torture apologist John Kiriakou is a poor, innocent lamb being railroaded by the Obama administration?
Keith G
@Mnemosyne: The article clearly points out an escalation
That event happened this year. You are defending this?
Re: The House case, obviously this is all the current DOJ
My emphasis.
Thus, I clearly did not change the definition of ‘expansion’. I do note your less than subtle tactic of accusing me of being anti-Obama. That is silly reasoning which I trust is beneath you.

Okay, gotta do it:
What do you get when you cross a monkey with a computer?
A Hairy Reasoner
Sorry
Mike Wallace promised the daughter of Churchill he would not ask about his drinking, it was a condition of the interview. According to my grandfather, his second question was “How much did your father’s drinking affect you?”
He was a great interviewer but not a nice man, near as I can tell. And his son Chris on Fox is a complete tool.
Should I be kinder? The parasites from my cat box are making me crazy again.

@lamh35:

One of my favorite farside comics was the devil yelling ay Mike Wallace to turn off the cameras because he ddnt want questions about that pestilence thing. The caption was “Mike Wallace interviews Satan.”. RIP Mr. Wallace.
Mnemosyne
@Keith G:
Yes, clearly when I advised currants to have his/her family friend contact her US senator to get some outside assistance to get the DHS harassment to stop, I was defending the DHS harassment. Good one.
Sorry, I didn’t realize that Wikileaks had been invoked in the other case. I realize that for GG fans, the actions of Wikileaks cannot be questioned or criticized and any government investigation of Wikileaks’ actions is by definition illegitimate, so I probably shouldn’t have waded in at all.

@Raven: My brother-in-law, who spent two tours in Viet Nam in 1964 and again in 1968-69 despised Westmoreland. Thought he was a terrible commander.
James Hulsey
For all the praise here, especially about that late 50’s interview show, nobody’s mentioned the hit job that Wallace did against Margaret Sanger.
http://www.hrc.utexas.edu/multimedia/video/2008/wallace/sanger_margaret_t.html
Sanger wanted to talk about world hunger and over-population, and Wallace kept on taking pro-religion positions and dismissing Sanger’s concerns.
