Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

Let’s finish the job.

Putin dreamed of ending NATO, and now it’s Finnish-ed.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

We’ll be taking my thoughts and prayers to the ballot box.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

We still have time to mess this up!

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

American History and Black History Cannot Be Separated

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Dead at the age of 93.

My favorite at 60 Minutes will always be Harry Reasoner, but Wallace was pretty good, to put it mildly.

Made me wonder if his son thinks about how his mediocre journalistic ability showcased on FoxNews compared to his father more stellar legacy.

This is def a case where the son has not lived up to the father n’est ce pas?

Nobody could make the sleazeballs sweat like Mike could make them sweat. It was a joy when he & 60 Minutes were in their prime, watching him set them up and them pulling the rug out so that they would fall on their fat faces.

those days are long gone now, no news outfit would allow its people to be so unkind as to expose bad actors on film (or video). Particularly if they are corporate “people” or wingnut pols.

I used to love 60 minutes…but it’s probably been 20 years since I watched it.

OT, and I know people get annoyed with Greenwald, but have you seen this? The filmmaker’s a family friend; what she’s been going through is just insane, and she’s right–it must be so much worse for the people who don’t have the resources and knowledge that she has.

I’m thinking of Taibbi’s piece on police in private buildings, and the recent SCt ruling on strip searches, and wondering what to do about the police state we seem to be leaving for our children.

Not to speak ill of the dead, as Mike Wallace was a very talented interviewer and reporter, but it sure looks like he must have been a shitty parent given his offspring. OK, maybe he just didn’t have much to work with when it came to Chris.

At least Luke Russert is merely a willing tool.

It’s not only that — the Food Lion lawsuit scared a whole lot of news organizations even though ABC ultimately won. Corporate lawyers don’t want to deal with any lawsuits, even ones that the company will probably win.

he CBS Reports documentary The Uncounted Enemy: A Vietnam Deception, which aired on 23 January 1982, engendered one of the most bitter controversies in television history. The 90-minute program spawned a three-year ordeal for CBS, including disclosures by TV Guide that the report violated CBS News Standards; an internal investigation by Burton (Bud) Benjamin; and an unprecedented $120 million libel suit by retired U.S. Army General William C. Westmoreland.

Westmoreland sued producer George Crile III, correspondent Mike Wallace, and others for alleging that Westmoreland participated in a conspiracy to defraud the American public about progress in the Vietnam War. The suit was dropped, however, before reaching the jury, with CBS merely issuing a statement saying the network never meant to impugn the general’s patriotism.

    @Keith G:

Since the 2006 release of “My Country, My Country,” Poitras has left and re-entered the U.S. roughly 40 times. Virtually every time during that six-year-period that she has returned to the U.S., her plane has been met by DHS agents who stand at the airplane door or tarmac and inspect the passports of every de-planing passenger until they find her (on the handful of occasions where they did not meet her at the plane, agents were called when she arrived at immigration).

Damn that Obama and his time machine that allowed his DHS to start harassing this woman in 2006!

    Your point?

It’s not an “expansion” if it’s a continuation of an established policy, unless you’ve changed the definition of “expansion” to “anything Obama does.”

currants, if your friend lives in a state with at least one Democratic senator, I would suggest that she contact that Senator with a complaint about the DHS harassment. Sometimes senators can bring pressure to bear against government agencies that a mere private citizen can’t. If her both of her senators are Republicans, she can still try to get them to take up her complaint, but she may be screwed.

  77. 77.

    Keith G

    April 8, 2012 at 8:37 pm

@Mnemosyne: The article clearly points out an escalation

After she advised them that she was a journalist and that her lawyer had advised her to keep notes of her interrogations, one of them, CBP agent Wassum, threatened to handcuff her if she did not immediately stop taking notes.

That event happened this year. You are defending this?

Re: The House case, obviously this is all the current DOJ

The DOJ demanded dismissal of the lawsuit, citing the cases approving of its power to search without suspicion, and also claimed that House was targeted not because of his political views but because of his connection to the criminal investigation of Manning and WikiLeaks. But the court refused to dismiss House’s lawsuit, holding that if he were indeed targeted by virtue of his protected activities, then his Constitutional rights have been violated

    My emphasis.

Thus, I clearly did not change the definition of ‘expansion’. I do note your less than subtle tactic of accusing me of being anti-Obama. That is silly reasoning which I trust is beneath you.

Yes, clearly when I advised currants to have his/her family friend contact her US senator to get some outside assistance to get the DHS harassment to stop, I was defending the DHS harassment. Good one.

Thus, I clearly did not change the definition of ‘expansion’.

Sorry, I didn’t realize that Wikileaks had been invoked in the other case. I realize that for GG fans, the actions of Wikileaks cannot be questioned or criticized and any government investigation of Wikileaks’ actions is by definition illegitimate, so I probably shouldn’t have waded in at all.

For all the praise here, especially about that late 50’s interview show, nobody’s mentioned the hit job that Wallace did against Margaret Sanger.

    http://www.hrc.utexas.edu/multimedia/video/2008/wallace/sanger_margaret_t.html

Sanger wanted to talk about world hunger and over-population, and Wallace kept on taking pro-religion positions and dismissing Sanger’s concerns.
