In honor of Cookie the Penguin, here’s a couple trailers for those of us not too proud to remember where we came from. Thank goddess Facebook didn’t exist during the 1974 NYC Comics Art convention, because even at age 19 I didn’t really have the figure for a home-made “Shanna the She-Devil” costume…

And I’ve never been a gamer, but I’d watch this just for the characters…

PENGIE!!
It was just Sakuracon up this way. Since I come from a family of heathens they came up for that and a visit. I ended up wayyy overspending this weekend. And it was all worth it.

Wil Wheaton has a new YouTube show in which he plays various cool tabletop games with friends and celebrities and describes how they play. It’s called, unsurprisingly, Tabletop. I enjoyed the first episode.

I saw Indie Games a week ago in Palo Alto. My housemates know Edmund, the designer of Super Meat Boy. It’s a good movie, I enjoyed it even though I’m not a serious gamer.

Hittin’ a little close to home with this, Anne. Not the penguin, not Comicon.
The other one.

I still have some cognitive dissonance that it is okay to be a geek and even a nerd these days (dorks still aren’t cool). After taking sh*te for my geekiness for all my formative years, I’m still a little gunshy, though I call myself a geek and a nerd and am amused when non geeks try to reassure me that I’m “okay”. I know I’m okay, it’s you guys I feel sorry for. The ones who get more from the Kardashians than Game of Thrones.

Just got this in my mailbox. C’mon all you gamers – sign it!
Fundies will let gamers kill millions onscreen, but won’t let two guys have a smooch together – jeesh!
“Electronic Arts (EA), maker of the highly popular Star Wars: The Old Republic video game – is the target of a boycott orchestrated by hateful anti-gay groups. Why? Because they had the courage to give players around the world the option of including a gay romance storyline in their interactive Star Wars game.
Right now, thousands of anti-gay letters are flooding Electronic Arts headquarters, threatening to push the company and its staff to the dark side (“Homos are ruining gaming!” wrote one boycotter. “I urge all parents to keep any EA games from their children to prevent them to be AIDS-spreading, Satan-loving scum,” wrote another).
But we can do something about it – if we channel the force for good. Companies like Electronic Arts need to be rewarded when they do the right thing. And together we can help them stand their ground. Sign this urgent letter to Electronic Arts (EA) now, asking them to stay strong and resist the dark side. When 50,000 of us sign on, All Out members will make news by dressing as Star Wars characters and delivering your letters directly to Electronic Arts headquarters:

Video games – like books, magazines, TV and film – are enjoyed by hundreds of millions around the world, and the fictional characters in them often inspire us, and teach us about the world we live in. This is exactly why anti-gay hate groups are targeting them – because they know that the more LGBT people are represented as regular characters, the harder it will be to deny them equality in the real world.
Games from Electronic Arts (EA) reach 100 million players in 75 countres around the world. When a major company like this makes the effort to create gay role models for all players, gay and straight, we need to let them know that we’ve got their back – especially in the face of an organized hate campaign.
Sign now, and we’ll make sure company executives know the force is with them:

Thanks for going All Out.

@Gregory: Thanks for the heads up. I ended up looking at all the G&S show trailers. I think I may have a shiny new addiction. I have done a little tabletop gaming and liked it. Wouldn’t mind doing more. Wish I had friends nearby like Wil and Felicia.

The guy who got the double eagle ball at the Masters donated it back to the Augusta National Museum.

@greenergood: Another front opens in the culture wars. sigh.

@Egg Berry:
Wouldn’t that be:
Open another front in the culture war has.

My attitude in a nutshell. I should apologize for something that increases my intelligence and imagination, led me into a career of sorts, and has enabled me to pursue my dreams by giving me the right skills?
As I like to think back on my JR High detractors: Like “normal” has done so much for you…
Speaking of geeks:
@greenergood: Thanks for letting me know, happy to support EA in this. Facebooked, as well.

@<a href="https://balloon-juice.com/2012/04/09/late-night-open-thread-tickling-the-geeks/#comment-3171081"?greenergood:
Seems I vaguely recall that EA (and Maxis) went through the same dance and same threats regarding the Sims games, which also allowed gay relationships, including (albeit with a few tweaks) gay marriage and male pregnancy, and stood firm.
RobertB
I think there was a thread about this in Balloon Juice a couple of months ago. There are currently no gay romance options for player characters in SWTOR, and there aren’t any planned for the immediate future (patch 1.2). Bioware was making noises like they were going to include them later, but there’s nothing definite in the works.

@greenergood: Technicality of sorts, but the actual option of gay relationships hasn’t shown up yet in-game. I think it’s mostly missing though because of a bit of a rush to get the game out. There are a few other small things that point to this (one race being represented by one female with slight reskinnined colors being one example) and most of those will be on the back burner, including same-sex companion romance options until other more pressing game issues are addressed.

Jeebus the assholes aren’t even original. Didn’t they pitch a fit over the Mass effect series?
