    Suddenly I feel like I’m back at film school, struggling to answer an essay question about the boring piece of crap nouvelle vague film that I fell asleep halfway through.

    Also, for my fellow lady cyclists, I just ordered myself a pair of Merrell Evera MJ bike sandals. I will report back when I actually receive them, but Merrells are usually damn comfy shoes, so I have high hopes.

    I discovered them through my other new discovery, Momentum magazine, which started off as an e-zine and has now started publishing paper copies as well. Bike commuters unite!

    @Valdivia: Emma was a cat among cats. Lost an argument with a car in her nineteenth year. Miss her still, years later, though Tikka’s generally foul view of the world in general suits my mood a lot these days.

    Awww…Tikka looks exactly like Shadow, my very first kitty-cat — a stray who found us when I was 8 years old. Tikka looks just as snuggly and gentlemanly.

    BTW, Sarah – can’t tell you how fluent I became at using those phrases when I was in France. The French were wonderful when I would say this – so helpful and kind. We actually ended up as guests in a Parisian home in the 17th arrondissement when I used it once.

    @The Fat Kate Middleton: It’s true. That stereotype about the French being snooty? I didn’t see a bit of it. I found that if you make even the tiniest effort to speak French, even if it’s done badly, they’ll fall all over themselves trying to help. A total stranger at the train station in Lille actually backtracked about 5 minutes out of her way to help us find our train.

    a fantastic time, & the French were absolutely lovely, especially once I’d learned to say, “Ne pas blamer moi –
    je ne vote pour (any GOP president since the 80’s) lui !” Often think that actual rude French people are shipped overseas to torment us here in NYC !

    It just so happens I have these exact same cats: a white short-haired cat from Jakarta who is a whack job and a Maryland longer haired farm cat who regards herself as Marie Antoinette if Marie Antoinette was a jaded Klutz.

    So we don’t have cat doors, which are or can be two-way but. in any event, the feline wonders spend a lot of time outdoors. Predictably, the Jakarta wonder spends his time getting high on catnip or lounging around while the MD cat spends her time plotting attacks on every other life form, t no effect because she is a klutz. Oh well.
