    Goddamned stupid jackass “hero”.

He’s like the shipmate who doesn’t wear mesh-gloves, or the high-line wire guy who doesn’t go grounded, or the yahoo who keeps one in the chamber “just to be safe”.

As wonderful as this story is, I hope he doesn’t get reduced to the mayor who saved someone from a fire. This act is in keeping with everything he’s done in Newark since he became mayor.

He has developed such a good reputation and such good will among NJ residents that he could easily have sought and won higher office by now. But instead he’s stuck with Newark, which had just begun to turn around when the bottom fell out of our economy in 2008.

So yesterday Micheal Smerconish was subbing for Tweety and he had Alan Dershowitz on discussing George Zimmerman affidavit files yesterday by the prosecutor. Dershowitz said it was “unethical and irresponsible” and II was more taken aback by his tone, and how accusatory he was towards this prosecutor based soley on her press conference and I guess the affidavit and it just seems rather inflammatory towards her. It made me wary of even listening to what he said, he said it in such a bitter and rather partisan way too.

Anyway, Booman was also wondering much the same as I was…how much should I care what Dershowitz says?

Any Lawyers Want to Help Me Out?
    by BooMan

Okay. I am willing to potentially make an ass out of myself this morning. I noticed during my morning reading that Prof. Alan Dershowitz said that the affidavit filed against George Zimmerman was “irresponsible and unethical” because it was so thin on details and because it was consistent with a self-defense argument. To be honest, i was disappointed that the affidavit didn’t provide any new information, but I am also confused by Dershowitz’s response…

    April 13, 2012 at 9:48 am

@lamh35: Unethical is a weird word to use. If the problem is that the affidavit is consistent with a probable cause defense, then Zimmerman can ask the judge to dismiss the case because he thinks the affidavit is insufficient, or whatever.

I’m not a criminal lawyer and I don’t know exactly how things work in Florida, but I wouldn’t think an affidavit of probable cause would have to disprove self-defense. It merely has to establish that self-defense is improbable. Since the affidavit claims it was Trayvon Martin heard screaming on the 9/11 tape, that certainly seems to make self-defense unlikely.

Dershowitz is really smart and I’m not inclined to just jump to the conclusion that he had no point, but I’m confused by what he might have been getting at.

As for the fire, and snow shoveling, I’d expect nothing different. I’m sure he’ll do something I’m not a fan of, but I don’t need to be in the 100% column with pols, or people I like. He gets it.

I turn him off when he comes onto my teevee screen. He cannot see anything, even the law, through any other filter than his fear and loathing of Democrats and others, especially dark skinned others, though I thought he only loathed swarthy Middle Easterners and not our native near ones. But his loathing of Obama has probably allowed him to spread his bigotry around.

What people want in elected officials, particularly local ones, is a lot of attitude and no results. Also, like Chris Christie or that twit London mayor, feel free to vacation hundreds of miles away while disaster unfolds, as long as you call in now and then. The important thing is to talk down to everyone, blame other people for your failures and be a self-important jerk. That’s a sure ticket to success.

Well, that’s one way to have a “discussion” about it – I guess it would be boring to have everyone on TV agreeing that Trayvon was indefensibly murdered by a cop wannabe with race and anger issues. Gotta create controversy – those cable screamfests don’t watch themselves.

@lamh35: I read an op-ed piece by Dershowitz the other day on the Zimmerman case that seemed pretty meticulous and on-point to me. As others have said, he can have his crazy moments too. I guess the question is, setting aside all this person stuff, is there actually anything wrong with the affidavit, and from this lawyer’s perspective I sure haven’t heard a good argument yet.

I’m no expert on Florida criminal procedure, but I don’t think the prosecution has to knock down any potential defenses until after they’ve been raised, and seeing as how Zimmerman hasn’t even been arraigned yet, don’t know how its possible for him to have raised a defense. The fact remains that he’s not required to argue self-defense at trial, no matter what he told the police, so I don’t believe the prosecution is required to knock back that defense in its initial affidavit.

All they have to do is lay out facts for a prima facia case of Murder II, which I believe they did

    More “legal analysis” from Dershowitz…

Currently the Guardian has two articles addressing the legality under international law of an Israeli or US strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities. Arguing in the affirmative:

Alan Dershowitz, the renowned Harvard jurist, contends that Israel has the right to destroy Iran’s nuclear facilities as a pre-emptive act of self-defence under the UN charter and the Caroline test because Tehran has launched various “acts of war” against the Jewish state including shipping weapons to Hamas and Hezbollah, and calling for Israel’s destruction.

Was the rescued woman a blah, and/or a Democrat? If so, the Mayor is racist. Every year, billions of white non-democrats die in fires in the United States. How come the mayor has not rescued any of them? And why doesn’t the lame stream media cover white people killed in fires.

    @Culture of Truth:

My understanding is that that money came with plenty of strings attached – namely, most of that isn’t going to the current schools to improve conditions, but to your usual charter school stuff.

Cory Booker’s an awesome mayor, you’ll never find me denying that – but I do wish he’d stop listening to whoever’s making him agree with Christie on education, of all things. (Of course, it’s possible that with the current wave back in favor of progressivism, he might switch over too.)

Obviously, we’re not paying enough attention to Mayor Bouker’s Big Government, Executive Power overreach in invading his neighbor’s property? What right had this city official to enter her home? Heck, even before “Stand Your Ground” the NRA would have seen this as a clear-cut case of the homeowner having the right to shoot Bouker. Practically an obligation, in fact.

The Wikipedia tells me that there’s no limit on overall terms, but you can’t serve more than two terms in a row. I assume a President Mittens, or President Grannie Starver, or President Man on Dog, or whoever, will appoint Christie as his Secretary of HHS when the time comes, since nothing encapsulates the Republican commitment to health and human services like a morbidly obese douchebag.

Geez, can we ever bring up Christie without getting fat jokes? That’s really not what’s offensive about him, and there are plenty of people on the side of light who are heavy, too.

Fuck that fat bastard. I’m not gonna stop making fat joke on his behalf or for fear of insulting overweight people. For most people, being fat is something that can be changed. He could lay off the donuts and hot dogs and slim down. And it’d be healthy for him.

Anyways, let me test this moderation thing–Booker.
