The White House issued a veto threat against CISPA, the latest attempt to turn file sharers into terrorists. Earlier this year, the White House also effectively killed SOPA by announcing that it opposed that bill, and it looks like CISPA has met the same fate.
In addition to being the right thing to do, I don’t think the DC press appreciates how important opposition to these bills is to the “youth vote”, which in this case is probably anybody under 80 who uses the Internet. SOPA and CISPA are two cases where having Obama in the White House has made a difference.

I love the first comment on the linked article, straight from firebagger central:
Yes, of course that’s why – it’s all part of Obama’s evil plan to throw the internet under the bus. No doubt something he hatched while eating dog meat at the madrasa.
Sigh. With friends like that, who needs enemas?

It would sure be nice if the FDL folks know about this.
I’m heartily sick of hearing about how Obama is Bush III, or IV, or no different from President McCain and VP “Snowbilly Yack’s a Lot.”

@Joey Maloney: Come on, have some compassion. Obama deprived them of an important whining point, which was very thoughtless of him, and now they’re temporarily reduced to their more usual free-floating whining.

My guess is that within the week Glenn Greenwald will use 2500 words with eight updates to say essentially the same thing. Take a drink every time he writes “it is impossible to underestimate…” When he adds the modifier “literally”, take two drinks. When he shows up in comments to impugn the motives of anyone disagreeing with him, finish the bottle, because alcohol poisoning is preferable to reading any further.

@Joey Maloney:
I wish I knew what is in the water over at FDL that makes them such idiots about certain things.
I suppose it’s possible that Grover Norquist gave them some kool-aide.

@c u n d gulag: Loonies do not recognize reality. Fuck’em.

@Villago Delenda Est:
It isn’t the water over at FDL, it’s the mushrooms. That’s what happens when you keep ’em in the dark and feed ’em bullshit.
All they have to eat is the mushrooms. I’ll stick to the weed.

It’s also important to the “people who need a working internet to keep the paychecks coming” vote, of which I’m one. Thanks, Mr. President.

@Forum Transmitted Disease: same here.

@Joey Maloney: An obvious FDL tweeted me that Obama was GWB #3 and she was voting for a third party. She blocked me as soon as I started calling her on her BS. They can dish it, but definitely cannot take it.

I love dickheads who don’t read the news, who blame the president for shit congress does.
But really. I don’t know why that Gitmo zombie lie piss me off so much. It is not like too many people even give a shit about it.

The one thing that troubles me is that the White House is threatening to veto this bill in its current form. I know that minor changes to the language of the bill have been made since then to try and get the president on board, but the very intention of the bill itself stinks to high heaven. If CISPA makes it to Obama, I hope that he does not sign this bill in any iteration.
Of course on the small chance that this bill gets defeated, another one just like it only with a different name will get proposed. Since when did our elected officials become so jealous of China’s Great Firewall?

Gizmodo has a good series of articles on this bill, including helpful links for letting your Congresscritter know your feelings.
