Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

Republicans do not trust women.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

The arc of the moral universe does not bend itself. it is up to us to bend it.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

President Musk and Trump are both poorly raised, coddled 8 year old boys.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

Republicans in disarray!

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Anne Laurie is a fucking hero in so many ways. ~ Betty Cracker

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Their shamelessness is their super power.

Dumb motherfuckers cannot understand a consequence that most 4 year olds have fully sorted out.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Wednesday Evening Open Thread

by Anne Laurie|  May 16, 20129:00 pm| 36 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, All we want is life beyond the thunderdome, Romney of the Uncanny Valley

FacebookTweetEmail

(Drew Sheneman via GoComics.com)

For those who haven’t had a chance to scan comments today, commentor Yutsano made it through his (disc) surgery well enough that he’s back in the threads already. May your progress continue smoothly, Y!

And for something completely different, commentor Chyron HR had an idea:

I just realized—there is a non-zero probability of Romney picking a VP and then changing his mind afterward. How glorious would that be?

Apart from happy news & glorious speculation, what’s on the agenda for the evening?

I’m trying not to tear my hair out, but it just feels like things are becoming so terribly opaque and impenetrable. Apparently, across several recent polls, Romney is now even or winning outright against Obama, while Walker looks like he’s going to win in a sprint in Wisconsin. YOu know, despite numbers putting the blatant lie to Walker’s supposed miraculous job numbers. But I guess that doesn’t matter because “FUCK DEMS!!!” still seems to be a winning electoral strategy even when public opinion turns away from that.

Just…..Christ, what’s the fucking point. Even when the GOP loses public opinion, they still win all the goddamn fights that matter.

Controlling the national media helps a great deal in all this.

I hope not, but I never had a good feeling about the recall strategy. Walker’s polling numbers, while not great, weren’t low enough to indicate that Wisconsin voters genuinely thought that he’d violated the public trust enough to merit kicking him out of office. They may not like him a great deal, but they may figure the proper time to hash all of this out is during the regular election cycle.

If the VP candidate winds up flopping on the debut/trail, I really wouldn’t be surprised to see some “family issue” creep up to require a new pick (although the chances diminish to zero-ish the closer you get to the convention).

I saw Chyron’s comment earlier. It’s a definite possibility. If he announced a candidate that had the Tea Party or Rush screaming, he would definitely say within 24 hours that he had “misspoken”.

I’m not trying to put you on the spot (lord knows I’ve had my depressive moments about the state of this country), but could a non-trivial part of the GOP’s winning strategy be that they don’t proclaim doom before any actual votes have been cast? The WI election’s on June 12. Plenty of time for GOTV.

I don’t often run into Teahadists who are completely hardcore. Western PA is socially conservative and quite racist, even if some are that way unintentionally, but they can often bexreasoned with if you can draw them into a conversation. Generally a good but uninformed and often clueless people. But I recently got involved in a group on FB from my high school class and one guy who I knew well but wouldn’t really call a friend decided to comment on a link promoting Obama that I posted. His argument was, seriously, to call Obama Obummer. So I told him we were both over 50 and should be beyond juvenile name calling and that if he had substantive disgreements about facts or policy, I’d be happy to have that discussion. He relied by saying that he’d noticed I was an atheist and that he felt sorry for me since I obviously just substituted Obummer for morals and a god. I am flabbergasted that he thought this was a political give and take. After taking a deep breath, I just relied that I’ve never been happier and more at peace in my whole life than I am right now and the fact that he couldn’t imagine having morals without someone telling him was not a strong argument as to his moral superiority.

I shouldn’t be surprised by this, I guess. But I so rarely run into a complete parody of a Red State commenter IRL. This guy always was an asshole, but I had no idea. Maybe I should give my neighbors more credit. They are nothing like this fuckstick even if I want to throttle them sometimes. At least most of them are Dems, if of the irritating Reagan Democrat type.

@Yutsano: YAY YUTS!! Just arrived in Phoenix, my home for the next few days, and will catch up on the day’s Balloon Juice threads and Charlie Pierce columns over a glass of wine in the hotel lounge.

Speaking of which: by the time I got to Phoenix, it was 105 degrees. Not humid, as was discussed last night, but still rather like walking into a pizza oven.

    @Linnaeus:

I hope not, but I never had a good feeling about the recall strategy.

The gubernatorial recall was probably the dumbest idea I’ve ever seen activists come up with. Seemed like more of an effort to exert whatever power they had than actually do something productive.

The better option was to leave Walker alone, go after the state legislature, take out Republican there (either in recalls or this November, which would have helped Dem turnout)

Instead they’re going to deliver another unnecessary victory to Republicans, pat themselves on the back by trying, and figure out how its Obama’s fault.
