Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

Oppose, oppose, oppose. do not congratulate. this is not business as usual.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

We will not go back.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

So many bastards, so little time.

Trumpflation is an intolerable hardship for every American, and it’s Trump’s fault.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty. ~Thomas Jefferson

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

Will Chelsea prevail without John Terry, Ramires, Branislav Ivanovic and Raul Meirelles?

Will  Bayern  Munich  benefit from the blind luck of home field advantage?

OK, so last week was the biggest game in the history of the universe so where does this one stack up?

I’m praying that Chelski lose just so that Spurs aren’t punished for ‘only’ finishing in 4th place. But I’m a Liverpool fan, so maybe I’m just bitter.

Chelsea want this more. And Luiz and Cahill, assuming both are fully fit, will do the job well. Bertrand getting the start at left midfield is a surprise, though. As such, we might see Torres on the left side in the second half, and could also see Essien inserted into the back line if Luiz or Cahill go down. Going to be a doozy.

    Scheisse!!

Watched the match with a beer garden full of sodden and crestfallen Germans on NYC’s Lower East Side.

It’s hard to be gracious upon Chelski’s victory, given my loathing for Roman Abramovich. Nevertheless, there is a certain pleasure that several world-class players, close to retirement, like Peter Cech, Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard(?), will have a Champions League winners’ medal for his trophy cabinet.

I thought the match bore a striking (perhaps not the most apt word) similarity to the Barcelona-Chelsea semifinal: the more dominant, creative squad squandered numerous chances. The Blues’ defense was stout and disciplined overall, but Bayern like Barcelona did not take advantage of opportunities created through patient build-up in the final third. While I too have an abiding dislike for Ashley Cole, he was massive today.

As for Bayern: Mario Gomez once again flailed in a big match; Ribery’s injury late in the second half was a cruel and perhaps decisive blow; Phillip Lahm was magnificent as usual, and Anatoliy Tymoschuk stepped in/up admirably.

Bastien Schweinsteiger’s inconsolable demeanor at match end expressed the feelings of Tottenham fans world-wide.

While not too emotionally invested in this match, whatever aches is soothed by the wonderful thought that the Euro 2012 tournament kicks off in 20 days!
