Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

You would normally have to try pretty hard to self-incriminate this badly.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

Dumb motherfuckers cannot understand a consequence that most 4 year olds have fully sorted out.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Reality always gets a vote in the end.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

Let the trolls come, and then ignore them. that’s the worst thing you can do to a troll.

My current Netflix find is In Search Of Shakespeare: not a Leonard Nimoy thing, but a 2004 BBC 4-episode series that follows in Shakespeare’s footsteps throughout his life. It’s just lovely.

Also catching Season 2 of Sherlock at the PBS website. It’s available for a couple of more weeks for streaming there.

And then I just found this:

    usatoday.com/money/industries/food/story/2012-05-22/free-pizza-order-in-spanish/55143404/1

Pizza Patrón, a 104-unit, carry-out pizza chain headquartered in Dallas, is raising eyebrows both inside and outside the Latino community with a planned promotion to give away thousands of large pepperoni pizzas on the evening of June 5 to folks who order in Spanish.
    __
It can be broken Spanish. It can be first-time Spanish. But it has to be Spanish.
    __
…One conservative group doesn’t like it, either. “It seems to punish people who can’t speak Spanish, and I resent that,” says Peter Thomas, chairman of the Conservative Caucus, which advocates English as the nation’s spoken language. “In public areas, people should be speaking English, and that includes pizza parlors.”
    __
But Andrew Gamm, brand director at Pizza Patrón, says it’s all about creating a buzz within the brand’s target market: Hispanics. He says 70% of its customer base is Spanish-speaking. “It makes perfect sense for us,” Gamm says. “We’re trying to make our bond with the Hispanic community stronger.”

If you are upset about a pizza chain promo giving away free pizza to people who speak Spanish, it is time to check with your doctor about Xanax.

@Stuck in the Funhouse: I’m not sure where you are in the desert (if I ever even knew) but I’ve spent the past week in AZ and as of today NM. It has been HOT HOT HOT, and today was very windy (60 mph) with dustouts. However did people travel before air-conditioned cars?

Spending the night in Albuquerque, might try to get to OKC by tomorrow. I need to go up to Tulsa for a quick trip to the Gilcrease Museum, to see a painting that’s haunted my memory for the past 17 years. Back home in Atlanta by Sunday, I think, although I’m technically on vacation until June 1st.

I’m in the southwest corner of New Mexico, where at 6000 feet elevation, we are a few degrees cooler than the less elevated AZ desert. Still hot though, and windy today as you say. From now till the first week of July, when the monsoon rainy season kicks in, is our hottest time of year. And every so often in some years similar heat to AZ. One thing I’m doing this summer, is pretty much block the sun completely from all windows and the passive solar heating that makes it even hotter. I like a lot of sunshine coming into the abode, but anything I can do to cool off, is top priority. Especially since I ain’t getting any younger. :)

    @Clark Stooksbury, @Comrade Scrutinizer:

Yup, Paul Fussell has passed away:

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Paul Fussell, an acclaimed literary scholar who won a National Book Award in 1976 for “The Great War and Modern Memory,” died Wednesday morning at age 88.
    __
His stepson Cole Behringer said Fussell died of natural causes in a long-term care facility in Medford, Ore. Behringer said his mother and stepfather moved to southern Oregon two years ago from Rochester, N.Y.
    __
    …
    __
Fussell enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and was later awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
    __
“At first it was rather fun,” he said in a 1997 PBS interview with David Gergen. “It was kind of athletic and lots of fun. It was fast, and amusing, and so forth, and then all of a sudden one realized what the infantry was for. It was for killing the maximum number of young men like you.”
    __
His writings would be forever influenced by the horrors he witnessed.
    __
“Every war is ironic because every war is worse than expected. Every war constitutes an irony of situation because its means are so melodramatically disproportionate to its presumed ends,” Fussell wrote in “The Great War,” his study of World War I that ranked No. 75 on the Modern Library’s list of the greatest nonfiction books of the 20th century.
    __
“Great War and Modern Memory” used the work of English poets and authors to demonstrate how war is romanticized and idealized, turned into moral and religious parable, and what happens when the reality of war overwhelms the dream of it.
