Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

The revolution will be supervised.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

Republicans do not trust women.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

“Perhaps I should have considered other options.” (head-desk)

Also, are you sure you want people to rate your comments?

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

“They all knew.”

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

I really appreciate John and the rest of you contributing to send me and DougJ to Netroots Nation because otherwise I wouldn’t have seen this, which is the battle between BIG MONEY and SMALL MONEY, because nobody at NRN understands that BIG MONEY is ruling our world, and we need a very concrete example of that, with BIG MONEY represented as quarters and SMALL MONEY represented as pennies. I would have also missed someone playing a YouTube video of “Dump You” to the tune of Cee Lo Green’s “Fuck You” which which apparently was about some effort to dump those who didn’t have sufficient progressive values.

Also, too, I hope all of you will be contributing to my liver transplant fund because DougJ and I are already +3 a couple of hours after getting into Providence.

I posted this in the last thread, but this is relevant to the money chase question:

Obama is using the monthly fundraising loss in their donation emails. These two stats from the email are incredible:

We know that only 15 percent of Romney’s May totals came from people giving less than $250, compared to 98 percent in that category for us.
    …..
Together, our team raised more than $60 million in May—even more impressive when you hear that the average donation was about $55.

Let’s hope that translates into votes. God, the Supreme Court makes me sick. I just explained Citizens United to the woman who cuts my hair. She had no idea. She’d never heard of it. When people hear about it they are horrified, but the word has not reached most of them.

Somehow I don’t think that people donated so that you can go to mock and ridicule. I imagine the Daily Caller and the Breitgang have that angle well covered.

Is it silly? Yes. Does it matter? No. People feel like they’ve gotta express themselves so let them do it. OTOH, the pro-purity purger is a bit disturbing.

Save some liver for Kos’ Saturday night party. Do. Not. Miss. It. Other than that, do some people spotting. Probably won’t get any Breitbart sightings like last year, but if you do, they’ll be even more newsworthy. Sit in on as many sessions as you can. Pick the boring ones after lunch to get your napping in so you can be fresh for the parties later on. Pace yourselves (It sounds like you’re not. Rookies.)

Sorry, but after this past weekend’s HS reunion that money is already allcoated to others. Folks at the hotel told us they had done many reunions in the past but had never seen a group drink like we did (so much that the manager of the attached bar refused to honor the agreement to stay open late and offer us drink specials)

I just realized that the winner of this contest is quite easy to judge. When using currency to make letters, smaller money = smaller pixel size = higher resolution. We all know that higher resolution is always better.

Well. we still have REAL progressives out here in CA. Those of you in SF can see John Cole’s favorite cartoonist, Ted Rall, tonight at the Cartoon Art Museum:

How did a charismatic young president elected in an atmosphere of optimism and expectation lead the United States to the brink of revolution? From a chance encounter in the early 1980s to the Democratic primaries of 2007–08, syndicated columnist and political cartoonist Ted Rall was one of the first to size up Barack Obama as we know him now: conservative, risk-averse and tone-deaf. InThe Book of O(bama), Rall revisits the rapid rise and dizzying fall of Obama—and the emergence of the Tea Party and Occupy movements—and draws a startling conclusion: We the People weren’t lied to. We lied to ourselves, both about Obama and the two-party system. We voted when we ought to have revolted

Obama was the Manchurian Candidate to keep the left from revolting.

A sure sign the election season is fully on, is a mercurial dispatch from the pulse of the nation. Delivered by Flying Penus Award winner Mark “The Propeller” Halperin.

Mark Halperin: “With five months until Election Day, Barack Obama faces a grim new reality: Republicans now believe Mitt Romney can win, and Democrats believe Obama can lose.”

What a revelation, and impressive The Propeller has asked enough democrats to deign this surprising twoof. Water is wet, and Obama could lose. Wowee!

“Another danger for the President: the media freak show. Stalking that circus’ center ring is Matt Drudge, whose caustic website continues to help drive the news cycle with an emphasis on negative, mocking items about Obama and Vice President Joe Biden and their wives. The latest sign of Drudge’s potency: Ed Klein, the author of the virulently anti-Obama book The Amateur, was barred from major TV appearances and mostly ignored by the mainstream media, but the book’s prominence on Drudge’s website propelled it to the No. 1 slot on the New York Times nonfiction list.”

Drudge? that is so 1990’s. He obviously hasn’t yet tuned into today’s messengers of death to Obama. Breitbart, the dead guy, is leading the vet of the Kenyan usurper, this go around.

But he gets it right with “The Media Freak Show”. And he his emceeing it like the dutiful right wing stenographer of record. Or, should we say “Propelling” the bullshit.

It should actually be les Khmers Bleus. You know, French plurals. But English print media the world over refers to “the Khmer Rouge”, blithely disregarding the rule in French that adjectives describing plural nouns must also be plural (in this case, masculine plural).

You see, I can be an irritating grammar fussbudget in more than one language.

@FlipYrWhig: Right. I’ve seen a lot of blogging ink recently spilled defending the stimulus, health care reform, and wall street reform against GOP attacks. But when these things were passed, our betters trashed them because they weren’t good enough, which had the effect of reinforcing the conservative view that these accomplishments were actually failures. Now, we’re all trying to play catch up, because it’s wholly apparent that we could lose all of it if Romney wins (assuming the Supreme Court doesn’t abuse its power before then).

that’s the history of liberal cranks in a nutshell. They hated LBJ, now the very same people, who 45 years ago called him a “baby killer”, worship his tenure.

In 1935, they declared FDR a traitor and decided to primary him with True Progressive™ Huey Long until he was killed by his idiot henchmen. Now they long for the president who fire bombed women and children and imprisoned citizens in concentration camps.

@Anoniminous: Well, I’ve had the honor of voting for the man in not only Presidential, but Senate elections. I’ll admit that there’s at least two points on which I’m highly disappointed with how it turned out vs. what he actually said.

    1) When he was in the state Senate, he’s the one who pushed for (and got) a bipartisan bill on taping interrogations because there were genuine issues of trust with Chicago cops. To see him go from that to being Mr. State Secrets, Military Tribunals, and Drone Strikes is definitely disappointing since that wasn’t his previous track record.

    2) He made pretty strong statements at a time it wasn’t politically fashionable about focusing on Al-Qaeda and not being in favor of keeping troops on seemingly open-ended missions in foreign lands. It’s now more than a year since Bin Laden got himself dead and the EARLIEST we’re talking about having all the troops out of Afpak in is, what, 2014?

I won’t even mention the public option, since the BJ line is he never supported it, never pushed for it, and anyone who wanted it is some form of traitor to Democracy.

It’s the soft bigotry of low expectations. His father was the governor of Michigan. It’d be interesting to talk about that, how far Right Republicans have gone, how his father connected in that state while Romney does not, but we won’t.

Right, and, too, on a more personal human level.

“Why was your father able to connect in a state like Michigan while you seem to struggle?”

Because it isn’t being a Mormon. We know that, and we’re told again and again that despite everything Mitt does and says he’s a moderate (secretly) so what gives?

Is it… HIM? Is he maybe sort of an entitled, arrogant asshole?

    June 7, 2012 at 7:47 pm

@NobodySpecial: Yeah, I guess I’ve heard that, but that’s never been my critique — i.e., he was never all that liberal, so why are you surprised, doofus? I think he’s been able to act, in tangible terms, as liberal as his own party in Congress has allowed him to be, and that his _views_ are considerably more liberal than that.

On executive power in particular, I have a strong sense that it’s not that he believes in executive power because executive power rocks and Cheney was right and he put on the ring and got addicted, but that he’s embraced executive power because the legislature is so fucked up and unhelpful that he loves the idea of cutting them out of the loop. As a legislator, there’s no way he’d ever put up with that. I think as a Senator he’d be practically Feingold still. It’s just that as president, he wants the power to do shit, the very power he’d never allow a president to have if he weren’t president.

But I admit that it takes some reading between the lines and a lot of benefit of the doubt to get to what I just said.

Alright, well I guess I was wrong. Mock away. It’s just that in this case, where people, no matter how misguided, are trying to organize something truly grassroots, I find it a bit cruel just to show up and pull a Nelson Muntz. What incentive do people have to get out into the public sphere if folks ridicule them? Which is probably why Progressives wonks are so dull and boring, they cannot even give away an inch or sincerity or they’ll get slaughtered, from friend and foe.

@Quicksand: I can guarantee you one thing, it may not be jailbroken yet, but it will be. Just give it time.
