Greece versus Poland?
Simple. Germany wins.
Ronnie Pudding
It will be Poland, I think. But this group is impossible to judge.
BGinCHI
Poland has the stronger economy, but if they put in some austerity at halftime they can definitely still lose to Greece.
Dave
It’s days like these I am thankful I can work from home.
EdTheRed
“Don’t forget about Poland!”
Barney
The flesh-coloured outfit of the Greek goalie is really quite convincing in the long shots on TV. It looks as though a streaker has decided to play a major part in the game.
urizon
Poland. This Greek team isn’t the same as the 2002 champs. And Lewandowski is the real deal.
Coco Laboy
@urizon: Nice call – beautiful cross to Lewandowski – great header
Steeplejack
Looks like Poland. They have dominated the early part of the game and are already up 1-0.
IM
Yellow-Red: The greeks get no break these days.
Mike Lamb
That was one of the worst sending offs I’ve seen. I’m not even sure that it was a foul–the Polish player was falling down before he even made contact with the Greek.
flaneur
Clear penalty for Greece.

The Greeks are buggered: The Euros are just like the €€€!!

Atrocious red card decision, followed up a minute later by a dubious yellow card for dissent from Greek players still agitated by the previous call. (Replay suggests it was not a deliberate hand ball by the Polish defender, though).
Clearly, the Poles did not need any assistance from the referee; the Greeks look woeful on both sides of the ball.
The Polish captain midfielder Jakub Blaszczykowski (these konzonants are gonna cill me) has been terrific. The Poles will get to work on goal differential in the second half. The Greeks may never cross the midfield line.

i call it a draw 1-1 and thanks for the reminder that I can watch on the computer!
lol chikinburd
Spanish referees were already legendarily garbage, by my understanding, at least within the league. And this Carballo guy was “Spain’s understanding official” going into this.
And Greece just score a fluke goal. Szczezszny utterly muffed one.
handsmile
Well, WTF do I know anyway!? (A line to be repeated I suspect throughout this tournament.)
Greece draws level, in a fine bit of of Jovian justice.
ETA: yeah yeah, it should be Zeus, but I like the alliteration.
lol chikinburd
-Szczesny, however his name is spelled, has now seemingly torpedoed Poland’s tournament singlehandedly-
Saved penalty by his replacement! Holy crap, what else is going to happen in this game? And strikethroughs, how do they freaking work?
Paula
I’m just following on the ESPN Gamecast and this shit looks craaaaaaaaaaazy …

Manuel Almunia is the giddiest man on the planet at this moment….
And a new Polish folk hero has been added to the nation’s pantheon!!
Przemyslaw Tyton!
Not so bad a match after all to start this tournament.

Opening matches are either deathly dull or bonkers. This one’s bonkers.
Paula
Sczcesny out for Russia. How much of a loss is that? Also, hasn’t Artur Boruc also played goalie for Poland? WHERE IS HE? TALK ABOUT A FRIDAY RAGE LIST.
Svensker
Draw!
Paula
Greece/Poland has to be the worst, most stressful match ever for transcriptors.
penpen
@Paula: Lol. He fell victim to the Poland manager’s zero tolerance alcohol policy supposedly.
Randy Paul
This will screw up a lot of brackets . . .

With 10 minutes to go, both sides dropped into “let’s not fuck this up” mode, which makes sense for the remainder of the group. Decent incentive now for the other two sides to play for a win in their match.

@r€nato: (#15)
Evidently you are a Delphic oracle. Could you please email me with your match predictions prior to kickoff? There’s still time for me to get a wager in on Russia v. Czech Republic.
Happy for Greece to have earned a draw, considering how hard done by they were with that totally unjustified red card. Their warrior-captain Giorgios Karagounis must be gutted though by his weak penalty kick.
I selected Russia/Poland as the teams to go through in Group A. I’ll still hold to that, but it makes this afternoon’s match all the more intriguing. I’m really curious to see what the Czechs can muster. Poland looked deflated and disorganized after conceding that fluky goal, and as Paula noted above (#22) their next match is against Russia without their first-string keeper.

I’m going to make a bold prediction that neither of these teams will be in the final.
