It’s been a couple years since we have had one of these music open threads. We used to do them a lot more often, and I remember me listing my “essential albums,” and I am reviewing the list and am embarrassed to admit that none of my choices have changed. I was listening to All Things Considered today while driving, and they profiled some pop singer who apparently has a hit with “Call Me Maybe.” I say apparently because I am such a loser I have three NPR channels programmed but nothing else, and wouldn’t know this girl if she shit in my living room. At any rate, they played the song, and I also learned that her profound pop lyrics (Call me maybe, I missed you before I knew you) were created while having no tv, and she thought that was what helped her make them.
It was at that very moment that I thought “Maybe I should drive something less survivable than a Subaru, because I really want to just gun it and drive off this bridge.” I didn’t, and instead drove home and took a nap, because let’s face it- I’m a middle aged single shit-talking wanker and driving off a bridge is really too much commitment for me.
At any rate, let’s use this thread for songs we love. I’ll start:
Your turn.
Sarah, Proud and Tall
The cake is a lie.
The Snarxist Formerly Known As Kryptik
Say what you will about their sound after they went mainstream, Incubus had one of the best albums of the 90s in S.C.I.E.N.C.E. Observe “Deep Inside” for one.
Also: Jeremy. Enough said.
Cap'n Magic
Thank the TSM for SiriusXM, where I have BBC World Service, Laugh USA and Opie And Anthony on my favorites. For giggles one day, I tried to listen to Alex Jones on Extreme Talk-I swear he’s nothing but an ad whore for all of those survivalist derps!
danah gaz (fka gaz)
I don’t have essential albums. My mood takes me everywhere. If I were to list everything I considered essential at one point or another I’d take up the entire blog.
On rap, you can’t go wrong with El-P (or most of Def Jux for that matter) The Streets (anything), Mos Def
On rock, (ducking flames) Floyd, Dylan, Beck, Smashing Pumpkins, Bowie
On dark shit: The Mr. Softee Ice-cream theme (best played from a van in a school zone), Jesus loves me, Recoil – Bloodlines, Hydrology. Select songs from The Fragile (Smell of Sunshine, I’m Looking Forward To Joining You Finally), Year Zero
And that’s just based on my current moods
The Snarxist Formerly Known As Kryptik
@Sarah, Proud and Tall:
For Science. You Monster.
Michael G
El-P, How To Serve Man.

Dude, choosing your time WRT music is fine, but try to listen to new things as well. Or don’t; what do I care?
Alison
I’ve lately been delving much more back into my goth/industrial clubbing days, musically. Have missed a lot of this stuff, so I’m going to be annoying and throw out a few standards from my favorite old SF darkling hangout:
Bjork – Army of Me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3biZkA-TNvs
Depeche Mode – Strangelove http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIrm0dHbCDU
Massive Attack – Teardrop http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7K72X4eo_s
Aw man…memories…
PanurgeATL
Can’t beat this one for unhip quotient, I’ll bet:
The whole Yes sequence from The Yes Album to Going For The One
Brain Salad Surgery, ELP (throw in “Tarkus”, too)
I.O.U., Allan Holdsworth
as the world, echolyn
Grand Opening And Closing, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
Petite Symphonie Concertante, Frank Martin
Symphony #4 (Deliciae Basilienses), Arthur Honegger
Three Orchestral Pieces, Alban Berg
Variations For Orchestra, Arnold Schoenberg
“A Survivor From Warsaw”, ditto
Piano Concerto in G, 2nd mvt., Maurice Ravel
Hemispheres, Rush
Selling England By The Pound, Genesis
The Chicago sequence from The Chicago Transit Authority to VIII
“Divided We Stand”, The Dixie Dregs
Concerto For Orchestra, Bela Bartok
Music For Strings, Percussion, and Celesta, ditto
John Cole
@Omnes Omnibus: The point of this thread was for you to share things you think I should be listening to. So what new things do you have to offer?
asiangrrlMN
Flight of the Conchords, Business Time.
Professor Elemental, Fighting Trousers.
I’m in a weird mood right now, so these are funny songs.
John Cole
@PanurgeATL: Links, damnit.
danah gaz (fka gaz)
@Alison: Bjork – It’s Oh So Quiet. I love her – she’s a fucking Diva.
Mnemosyne
Most of my favorite songs are by Elvis Costello, but this is in my top three: “Suit of Lights”
Punchy
Gotta recc Ice Cube’s Death Certificate. Just a perfect storm of fury, frustration, and Easy-E bashing. Best gangsta rap album evah.
satanicpanic
That call me maybe song is sooooo stupid. My essential albums-
The Dictators- Go Girl Crazy
MC5- Back in the USA
De La Soul- 3 Feet High and Rising
But do albums really matter anymore? I like lots of recent music, but I only know the hits.
danah gaz (fka gaz)
Panorama 6b I love this song. It was my soundtrack when I lived in the del ray on Broadway and hung out smoking my bong on the fire escape. =)
ETA: His best album? Hard.. Music for Earthworms? Float? (Labor Days deserves at least a mention).. Best single LP was Daylight – if only for the hidden track.
asiangrrlMN
More funny songs.
Tim Minchin, Canvas Bags.
Tim Minchin, 5 Poofs and 2 Pianos.
ETA: I’ve been listening to Queen most of the night.
Mnemosyne
Also, I love the poppiness of the music contrasting with the sad lyrics of “Changing” by The Airborne Toxic Event.
Jewish Steel
A fresh take on an all-time fave for me. I keep singing in hopes that one day this man’s voice will emerge from my skinny white neck.
Omnes Omnibus
@John Cole: This. Or this. Next question?
Alison
@danah gaz (fka gaz): Love that one too, especially that video :) She;s the cutest.

If you’re in the mood for funny, try Mitch Benn’s “James Blunt.”
Alison
@John Cole: John, are you familiar with Aloe Blacc? This is a particular favorite of mine from him http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iR6oYX1D-0w
dedc79
Strange Thunder – Howlin Rain (give it a few minutes, it takes awhile to get going)
asiangrrlMN
Actual songs I like.
Mash-up of Eminem and P!nk, When I’m Sober.
Texas, In Demand. Shut up. It’s a good song.

danah gaz (fka gaz)

FYWP exclamation filter!
asiangrrlMN
P!nk, Raise Your Glass (for all my freaks).
Eminem and Rihanna, Love the Way You Lie.
The prophet Nostradumbass
Here’s two, very different from each other, songs:
Belly: Feed the Tree
In Flames: Take this Life
Mnemosyne
@Omnes Omnibus:
It probably is — his father was a pretty famous bandleader in England, so he knew all about performing. IIRC Costello has incredibly deep knowledge of pop music because his father would bring all of the records home to learn them for the band.
@asiangrrlMN:
He’s the only man who is his own rhyming slang …
Also, too, putting up “James Blunt” reminded me of Neil Gaiman, whose blog I first found the song on, which reminded me to repost the link to Amanda Palmer and friends performing the entirety of the first Violent Femmes record, starting with side one, song one.
Third verse, same as the first …
asiangrrlMN
@danah gaz (fka gaz): I didn’t actually listen to that one. D’ohhhhh!
Rihanna and Eminem, Love the Way You Lie (Part 2).
Omnes Omnibus
@asiangrrlMN: Darling, you are spamming the ‘nets with this. Not complaining – I like some of her other stuff more, but chacun…
asiangrrlMN
@Mnemosyne: I fucking love Neil Gaiman. Amanda Palmer is a trip, too.
In This Moment, World in Flames.
Omnes Omnibus
@Mnemosyne: Oh god, you posted that link again… ::drool::
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: This explains a lot.
@danah gaz (fka gaz): There are other Islanders in the world.
asiangrrlMN
@Omnes Omnibus: P!nk or Rihanna? Either way, it’s the OCD in me! But, yeah. I like other songs by each as well.
The Civil Wars, Poison & Wine.
Yutsy: Queen, you mean?
Sarah, Proud and Tall
@Alison:
Enjoy (Over the edge).

@asiangrrlMN: Pink. BTW I want Amanda Palmer. Badly.

Your wish, etc. I don’t know if this’ll work, but here goes:
Petite Symphonie Concertante
A bit of the March from the Berg Three Pieces (you just have to see the hammer)
A live performance of Chicago’s “Introduction”
A music video from 1949 for Arthur Honegger’s “Pacific 231”, conducted by the composer IIRC
danah gaz (fka gaz)
@Yutsano: Yeah, but I tried playing it and it just got GONG’ed here in my house. Iceland is great and all, but there’s only one Bjork
Mnemosyne
@Omnes Omnibus:
I am a little embarrassed to admit that when I first watched it, I didn’t realize that “Brian Ritchie” was the actual Brian Ritchie until they clued me in later in the set. But I could only ever remember Gordon Gano’s name anyway.
James E Powell
This is about essential for me, not for everyone else, right? Because for me this is essential, can’t do without it.

@asiangrrlMN:
Amanda Palmer is like the best friend I wanted to have when I was 14. I have a very adolescent and completely platonic girl-crush on her.
Did you see her version of “Science Fiction/Double Feature” on Craig Ferguson? Her keyboardist may look strangely familiar.
The prophet Nostradumbass
A couple more:
Alkaline Trio: Sadie, charming number about Susan Atkins
Everclear: When it all Goes Wrong Again. Yes, Art Alexakis is an obnoxious douchebag.
handsmile
Where to even begin…okay, a baker’s dozen of songs that I probably wouldn’t want to live without (alphabetical by artist):
Stay, The Blue Nile
Tropical Hot Dog Night, Captain Beefheart
Thunder Cries, The Golden Palominos
Waltz, Robin Holcomb
Glow, Idaho
Over the Ocean, Low
Hoppipolla, Sigur Ros
Doctor Wu, Steely Dan
Stay Up Late, Talking Heads
Jet Plane in a Rocking Chair, Richard and Linda Thompson
The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys, Traffic
I’ve Seen All Good People, Yes
Cortez the Killer, Neil Young
In an another half-hour, I’d maybe come up with an entirely different list or different songs by these artists.
ETA: Sorry if I was supposed to provide links to the above. If any interest you, you’ll know what to do.
Watership
Okay, if you’re blasting Outshined and Testify and terrifying Tunch, you can handle the hard stuff. These guys are monsters, a three piece out of Belfast. And So I Watch You From Afar – Search:partyanimal

Two current British folk albums I have been obsessing over:
Kan, Sleeper

Hannah James and Sam Sweeney, State and Ancientry
Hannah plays accordion and sings, Sam plays fiddle and oodles of other things.

and the new one which just arrived this week, eagerly anticipated:
Fay Hield and the Hurricane Party, Orfeo
She’s backed by her partner Jon Boden and three other young instrumental stars.

John, your front pager Anne Laurie, a person who I’ve quasi-relentlessly bitched out in many of her threads ever since the ABL shit, posted a wonderful “call me maybe” video on your own blog a few weeks back. You should pay attention to your own blog a bit more. :P These people you’ve recruited post great content (my dumb, enraged posts complaining about them notwithstanding) on your blog.

@Mnemosyne: I didn’t remember his name, but I instantly recognized his bass in the intro to that video. He was the first person (and maybe the only one) who played an acoustic bass that isn’t a standup bass.
I got to see them in concert once, and they were awesome. IIRC, it was in a gym somewhere. In addition to the bass, Brian Ritchie had a big top hat with a theremin inside it.
danah gaz (fka gaz)
If my wife posts any Banda on this thread I won’t complain if you ban her. She has terrible taste in music. I love her anyway, but fuckin’ hell.
Banda is like the worst drugged out punk you’ve ever heard, only without the energy, and accordians instead of guitars. It’s fucking painful. The Germans have a lot to answer for, and that’s not even getting into that ugly incident regarding the Jews.
Irony Abounds
I was watching some PBS show on the British Invasion and they showed a clip of Dusty Springfield. You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me was a big hit, but I have just listened to Dusty in Memphis for the first time and it is a remarkable album. Those guys in Memphis also produced some great music for Elvis and Neil Diamond around the same time.

Rammstein!
I’m not overall a big metal fan, but they’re just awesome, and they do amazing videos.
If you get the chance to see them in concert, don’t miss it. They don’t tour in the US a lot because they don’t sing in English, so they don’t have as big a following as some bands, but the Ms. and I went last month (she’s a bigger fan than me, or we might not have gone), and I have no regrets. Their show is utterly spectacular. There could be equally good rock shows, but it is simply not possible for there to be a better spectacle-type show. The guiding principle seemed to be “if fire is good, more fire is better!”
The other thing that was weirdly amusing is that a lot of the audience was people dressed fairly tough/punk, but everyone we talked to was actually really friendly.
Redshift

danah gaz (fka gaz)
@Redshift: I’m with Elias on this one. The nicest thing I can say about Rammstien is that they are the smartest kid on the short bus.
And they do have a large following here. The reason they don’t tour here I imagine is that the gas station clerks that love them can’t get the time off from their menial dead-end jobs, nor scrounge together the cash to go to one of their shows. And the ones that could would rather be hiding dead hookers in their crawlspaces anyway.

I was happy when I found this clip someone caught of Aerosmith playing Sick as a Dog in 2002. The sound isn’t the best but I still like the clip for the old memories it brought back. I saw them in the 70’s and they did the same thing in concert (swapping instruments) and a similar instrumental at the end of the song. I was in a local party band and we loved to play this song at keggers and smaller parties, the crowd loved it too.
Ahh, the good ol’ daze…

Irish folk-rock project, originally quite political (I almost posted “Hiroshima Nagasaki Russian Roulette”) but they went all-instrumental at the end of the band’s original run.

Narcocorridos aren’t so hot. They evolved the same way Gangster rap did. Basically you’ve got asshole drug traffickers paying musicians to write bad polka about bad acts.
Sure it’s a cultural thing. So are the worst aspects of Gangster Rap. It doesn’t mean it’s not a product of a culture that is damaged by violence and poverty.

@Steeplejack: I like Monk, too. I know some people thought it was mocking OCD but I actually often felt the opposite – it seemed like, under the storylines and, sure, the teasing, there was often an effort to show how painful his situation could be, how hard it is to live with an emotional/mental problem like that. Plus, Tony Shaloub is hilarious.

Iris DeMent, I had a brief round of interest with her years ago. I remember when I bought her third album The Way I Should, the record store guy described it as “her career suicide album.” Later, I remember ripping it out of the car stereo and throwing it in the back seat on a drive to Toronto because I couldn’t stand the lecturing tone. (I’m fine with the twang. I love newcomer Elizabeth LaPrelle, who sounds like a 60 year old woman in the Appalachians but she’s really 24.)
I liked Gillian Welch’s first album a lot but she did not keep my interest.
DeMent, Welch, and my folk-ish links (Kan, Hannah James & Sam Sweeney, Fay Hield, Hedningarna, Moving Hearts) all seem straight down the middle of what I file as folk, no “alt” anything. But I refuse to become a taxonomist.

@danah gaz (fka gaz): Well, maybe that’s one of the things that the ‘alt’ in ‘alt-folk’ is about. For me now, though, It’s not about authenticity, it’s about the music and what moves me.

I’m late to this party but I have a weird music thing going on all day in my head. I’ve listened to Joni Mitchell’s ’72 record For the Roses at least twice a day for 2 weeks. Some days I play side 1 four or five times. There are technical reasons for this having to do with overhang, vertical tracking angle, Baerwald Alignment and the maximum vateral groove velocity of a piano chord. But mostly because it’s just about the perfect 1972 record yet relevant as hell for today. I present here the lyrics to the song Banquet, side 1 track 1. This was written 40 years too soon.
Come to the dinner gong
The table is laden high
Fat bellies and hungry little ones
Tuck your napkins in
And take your share
Some get the gravy
And some get the gristle
Some get the marrow bone
And some get nothing
Though there’s plenty to spare
I took my share down by the sea
Paper plates and Javex bottles on the tide
Seagulls come down
And they squawk at me
Down where the water-skiers glide
Some turn to Jesus
And some turn to heroin
Some turn to rambling round
Looking for a clean sky
And a drinking stream
Some watch the paint peel off
Some watch their kids grow up
Some watch their stocks and bonds
Waiting for that big deal
American Dream
I took my dream down by the sea
Yankee yachts and lobster pots and sunshine
And logs and sails
And Shell Oil pails
Dogs and tugs and summertime
Back in the banquet line
Angry young people crying
Who let the greedy in
And who left the needy out
Who made this salty soup
Tell him we’re very hungry now
For a sweeter fare
In the cookie I read
‘Some get the gravy
And some get the gristle
Some get the marrow bone
And some get nothing
Though there’s plenty to spare’

Certainly no argument (how could there be?) with Fischer-Diskau’s Schubert, but I prefer Ian Bostridge to Padmore with that material.
NYer music critic Alex Ross recently wrote a discerning tribute to Fischer-Diskau, “The Master’s Wake,” occasioned by his death last month. The link brings you up against a paywall, but you may know a way around that or even be one of those Left Coast subscribers to the NYer.
