The Christian elite’s pre-Enlightenment commitment to purging out the “impure”, defined variously as spiritually or intellectually adventurous free thinkers, those with unconventional sexual identities or practices, and the promiscuously inclined, is a story that defies easy stereotypes about progress and enlightenment, EXCEPT I KNOW WHO YOU ARE. On the one hand, these religious fanatics tended to be WASP grandees like Cotton Mather, ivory-tower dwellers and privileged have-mores with an obvious incentive to invent spurious theories to justify their own position.
But these same religious fanatics were often political and social lunatics and paranoiacs, advocates of social repression, partisans of state violence, critics of due process. “They weren’t sinister characters out of some darkly lighted noir film about Nazi sympathizers, but ministers, kings, pillars of society, and family men.” From King James I to Cotton Mather, to founder of the Peoples Temple, Jim Jones, fears about “sexytime” and “loose wimmins” were common among self-conscious religious snoops, who saw the quest for better fun times as of a piece with their fear of shit getting out of control.
This fanatics’ fascination with sex and fun largely ended with the Enlightment and the horrors wrought by the Inquisition and the 17th century which burnings.. But while the West has discarded the theory of the witchunt era, the practice urged by Savanarolo and others, the elimination or ostracism , through careful snooping, probing, pestering and invidious discrimination against women, has become a more realistic possibility than it ever was in the 17th century.
I’m not saying a head of state will come to watch your torture for witchcraft, or that you will be burned at the stake or pressed to death as a witch or a warlock, or that you will be poisoned in a mad fit of paranoia by your trusted cult preacherman, or that state police will convict you of murder and lock you away forever if anything at all happens to a blastula in the womb of you or your loved ones that has a 50 50 chance of surviving to birth , but…

BTW, is Douthat not aware that abortion, the practice of exposure and other triaging of resources to newborns and children based on their perceived fitness has been with us for thousands of years, in cultures all over the world? In fact, pretty much up to the recent medical advances that allowed severely premature newborns to survive?

Oh fuck it. I’m reading that awful piece and by the third ‘graph Douthat is already all twisted up and mired in the worst kind of sophistry, and I had to make myself stop skimming ahead to try to figure out what the fuckimg point is. His thesis, such as it is, is fucking obscure, to be generous, and so shrouded in jargon and generalizations, he makes my three year old’s favorite books (Lego Star Wars) look deep. How the FUCK does this guy get paid to write? I hate it when front pagers link to the Times columnists. Makes me a little crazy.

@jl: Yeah, I noticed that too. He really went after Fisher. Douchehat is destined for the Inferno, Eighth Circle (Fraud). Dante famously noted 10 pockets (bolgia), and Chunky Bobo could end up in Pocket 6 (hypocrites) or Pocket 8 (Evil counselors).
But I have it on good authority that two more pockets have been added in the last couple of decades, for intellectual hacks (#11) and concern trolls (#12). The intellectual hacks are force-fed their own books, crap them out and have to eat them again. Concern trolls wear an eternal expression of worry. They also have a hundred hands and wring them all the time.
Douchehat will end up in both places.

Ross Douthat calls pro-choicers Nazis.
I’ll overlook the article with its preposterous statement. I assume, though, he also identifies how the Pro-Choicers had a “Night of the Long Knives”, and were would they be without the burning of the Reichstag? And what, exactly, does that mean for Pro-Choice? And we can’t overlook the Pro-Choice equivalent of the Nuremberg rallies, which would be …? And the Kristallnacht? And the German Insurance companies? Or, and I’m just reaching here, Ross has no real idea of the Nazis, Pro-Choice or much of anything. These are all just words to him. They have no meaning, at least none that he understands. I had thought he at least knew better than that.
It is so sad when our furry friends pass even sooner than we expect they will. I feel for your loss. And what a very pretty friend.
Not very long ago my best friend dog, Step Aside Clyde went on a morning ramble through the woods, as he did most every day the weather was decent, and never came home. He was 11 or 12, way too young, saw his Vet regularly, and all that, and I miss him still
But as others have said, far better to miss them when they’re gone, than never to have loved them at all!
Best wishes for you and your remaining furry friends!

No! Those brave men and women who hide in the shadows to shoot womens health workers or slink in under the cover of darkness to hide bombs and those who harass and threaten women are the God inspired freedom fighters!!
Wonder if SUlly has an award for this douchebag? Probably not in this case

@Roger Moore: That’s true. I probably do whine more when I have some wine.

@Yutsano:
How about a good old fashioned impalement? When done properly, it’s both slow and painful.
Roger Moore
@cathyx:
I think I said that wrong. What I meant is that it’s always whine o’clock to Ross Douchhat.

Douchehat is a one man argument for arenas filled with hungry lions to toss idiots like him into.
With side bets on which lion will barf him up first.

@cathyx: I am so sorry for your loss. I had a cat, age 7, die suddenly two years ago. Vet speculated that it was a stroke. Mr. Mittens, with no warning, had a massive seizure and keeled over. Was it similar with your cat? Since he died, I’ve become militantly anti-overweight cat. Vet said him being 27 pounds probably contributed to his death.
TBogg
@Patricia Kayden: I have an answer for that.

@jl:
Haven’t several states recently passed laws to do exactly that?
Anna
@karen marie: Only if you’re not white!
WaterGirl
@cathyx: Heartbreaking to lose your kitty like that. What a shock. I am so sorry.
PurpleGirl
@cathyx: Sorry you lost your kitty.
A friend had to include plans for his parrots in his will because usually parrots will outlive their owners. However, both of his parrots got sick and died young (for a parrot).
cathyx
@karen marie: That sounds like my cat. The vet said that the blood clot can go to the back legs, like in my cat and he was paralyzed, or to the brain or an arm. My cat wasn’t overweight, but it won’t matter if they have that heart condition. That’s what will kill them.

If we’re the Nazis, can we send Douthat to Fat Kamp?
Johannes
@cathyx: I am so sorry for your loss. His life was richer for your presence in it, and I hope that is some comfort.
Heliopause
Interesting that half the comments are “sorry for the loss of your cat” and the other half are “what’s an appropriate torture for Ross Douthat?”

I like TBogg’s tag for this type of post: “CHUNKY REESE WITHERSPOON IS NOT A BEN & JERRY FLAVOR”.

PurpleGirl
@Heliopause: Douthat is a pompous ass who gives us much pain and agita.
Our animal companions give us much love and joy and are, no doubt, much more intelligent than Douthat.

@ Douthat
Fuck your fucking shit. My cat hacks up hairballs with more coherency.
Privatization of the Fairness Doctrine. Mind you, this is the best they could come up with at the NYT. Proof that the private sector doesn’t always do a better job.
ruemara
@cathyx: My condolences. I’m so sorry.

@cathyx:
