Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Really, there is no difference between Obama and Romney:

Last summer, gays in the military dared not admit their sexual orientation. This summer, the Pentagon will salute them, marking June as gay pride month just as it has marked other celebrations honoring racial or ethnic groups.

In the latest remarkable sign of change since the military repealed the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, the Defense Department will soon hold its first event to recognize gay and lesbian troops. It comes nine months after repeal of the policy that had banned gay troops from serving openly and forced more than 13,500 service members out of the armed forces.

Details are still being worked out, but officials say Defense Secretary Leon Panetta wants to honor the contributions of gay service members.

“Now that we’ve repealed `don’t ask, don’t tell,’ he feels it’s important to find a way this month to recognize the service and professionalism of gay and lesbian troops,” said Navy Capt. John Kirby, a spokesman.

Awesome.

Drives me crazy when I read that some people don’t think there will be any difference between Obama and Romney for President. Obviously, they are not paying attention to reality. We should be honoring anyone who is willing to serve in our military no matter what. A totally thankless job (especially if you’re a woman who gets raped and has to pay for your own abortion (if that’s what you want) because Republicans think that’s the only way to treat our women soldiers).

I made a huge batch of pesto tonight and am freezing it in ice cube trays to make it easier to use this summer :)

I’m too lazy to go look for the article, but I swear I saw one in the New York Times prior to the repeal that had the Marine officer in charge of coordinating the repeal basically say that he was doing his best to make sure the Marines would make the quickest transition and be the most welcoming branch because, goddamnit, they’re the Marines and they’re better than the other branches.

Good news, Republicans announced today that they wouldn’t
t be confirming any more of Obama’s circuit court nominees before the election. Granted, it won’t be much of a change from their usual behavior, but at least they had the common courtesy to inform the public.

Judicial vacancies have actually increased significantly since Obama took office due to Republican obstructionism. To put that in perspective, by this time in both Dubya’s and Clinton’s first terms, judicial vacancies had been reduced by approximately 60%.

Since Seamus was mentioned a few times; thought you might like to know:

WASHINGTON — The tale has inspired ample political commentary, and more than a few columns for the New York Times’ Gail Collins. Now, the story of Mitt Romney’s former dog Seamus could start becoming a profit-maker.
A new book, “Dog on the Roof! On the Road with Mitt and the Mutt,” is being released next month by the reputable publisher Simon and Schuster.
The book depicts the Romney family — using early photos of Mitt, his wife, Ann, and their five boys — crammed into a station wagon with a dog atop it. The family is shown driving to cities around the country as the authors use sing-song verse to lampoon Romney’s positions on immigration, gay rights, his ties to Wall Street — and the fact that he once drove to Canada with his dog in a container on top of the car.

I know it’s never going to happen, but I would love to see just one journalist report on how the Republicans have systematically used the power of obstruction in unprecedented ways and to an unprecedented degree to basically attempt — and in may ways succeed — to nullify the results of the 2008 election and block what the American people were voting for when they cast their ballot for Barack Obama.

But I guess it’s more important to write about the gaffe o’ the day and how Mitt Romney has apparently turned into a super-human political machine overnight able to leap tall buildings and vanquish Obama in a single bound.

It is funny seeing Americans complain about the lack of choice in your elections when in all the other nations that have, say, single-payer healthcare and maternity leave, there’s far lesss difference between the parties. A whole heap of the issues that are fiercely argued in US poliitics are almost entirely settled. And on style – it’s pretty hard to find a better orator than Obama, or for that matter a worse one than Romney, anywhere on the globe. Even in Australia, where people do love a drive-by honk, you’d have to look hard to find a candidate that would incorporate it into their campaign.

Anybody who brings up the subject of drone warfare, the assassination of Americans abroad and the warrantless surveillance of Americans domestically, the undeclared wars in Yemen and Somalia, and the failure to limit carbon emissions when he had the chance, and whether he’s doing enough to preserve reproductive rights, is just a homophobic racist bastard.

The real issue here is when gays in the military will have the right to marry each other.

@Mnemosyne: This is what I love about the Marines. They have this whole myth about honor, and they actually believe it, and that’s important. If you have a good myth to live up to, it makes you better people, and it makes a better organization.

By way of contrast, the Army’s founding myth is something like “If it moves, salute it, if it doesn’t paint it”, which really doesn’t make the people who listen to it into better people at all, nor does it improve the organization.

I bet the rape rate in the Marines could actually be pushed down by the leadership loudly reminding Marines that sexual assault is *dishonorable* and making examples by drumming out the dishonorable rapists. In contrast, doing that would make no difference at all in the Army, where honor just isn’t in the vocabulary.
