Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Come on, man.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Joe Lieberman disappointingly reemerged to remind us that he’s still alive.

There is no compromise when it comes to body autonomy. You either have it or you don’t.

The words do not have to be perfect.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

“woke” is the new caravan.

Don’t expect peaches from an apple tree.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

As long as McCarthy is Speaker, the House will never be in order.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

Ah, the different things are different argument.

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

This fight is for everything.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

A consequence of cucumbers

Our World is Run By Hacks

Charles Pierce, who may actually be my favorite writer in the country right now, on our media:

If you leave out the evil dumbfks who actually run the news business, the worst two things that have happened to American political journalism in the past 30 years are Maureen Dowd and Mark Halperin. Dowd, because of her relentless, obsessive need to take her own galloping Oedipal neuroses for an outing every time there’s an election, and Halperin, because he long ago invented the kind of Beltway insidery railbird bullshit that passes today for analysis. (This is, occasionally, referred to as “horse-race journalism,” but that’s unfair to people like my friend, the great Bill Nack. Actual horse-race journalism will tell you what you need to know about horse racing. The Racing Form will give you more substantive information on the sixth race at Monmouth Park today than Halperin has given you on American politics in the past two decades.) But the worst effect they both have had on the business is the influence their success has had on everyone else. Dowd, at least, can write a little. Most of her imitators can’t. And, if it weren’t for Halperin and his Drudge-mongering, his link-whoring, and his curious S&M relationship with various talk-radio hosts, there wouldn’t be Politico, and, this being the first presidential election of the Politico era, we end up with the thoroughgoing Halperinization of the process, with predictably grim results.

MARK HALPERIN’s “Between the Lines,” in the forthcoming issue of TIME: “Some Romney advisers sound especially bullish, with one positing that a big win by their side is now more likely than a narrow Obama victory.”

The front page of my local newspaper, today:

In growing numbers, once-confident Democrats now say President Barack Obama could lose the November election.

The hand-wringing reflects real worries among Democrats about Obama’s ability to beat Republican rival Mitt Romney, who has proven to be a stronger candidate than many expected. But it’s also a political strategy aimed at rallying major donors who may have become complacent.

Hypothesis, meet datum. Datum, meet hypothesis.

It’s a pity that Esquire permitted over 1300 other incidences of the word “fuck” yet the delicate flower Pierce can’t bring himself to say it.

By the standards of the Taibbi defenders we should all really hate Pierce. Don’t get me wrong, I like Pierce fine, but 1) I wish he would use the word fuck when he means fuck and 2) I’ve been told over and over that I only dislike Taibbi because he *does* say fuck.

    I think Cole means ‘datums’.

Datums are needed to test hypotheses.

And the datums I see from Silver’s blog is a steady 60 plus chance of Obama win for almost a month, which by the way is continuation of Obama’s consistent slight lead over whole year.

Little sign of any statistically significant movement in electoral preference for Obama.

But here is some interesting datums, for funs:

RNC’s Dysfunctional Latino Site Posts Vote On Obama — And Loses

” The main page features a straw poll asking visitors whether they’re disappointed with President Obama,…. As of Thursday evening, however, Obama was winning the unscientific survey 55 percent to 45 percent, highly unusual on a partisan website.

In another broken feature, the site’s info page, in English “Who Are We?”, is left entirely blank.

    http://2012.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012/06/rncs-dysfunctional-latino-site-posts-vote-on-obama—-and-loses.php?ref=fpnewsfeed

I read Pierce, and hes he does get a bit formulaic and long winded. But he’s pissed off about the right things and acts pissed off. More pissed-off-ness is a win for us. It’s a personal style but it works for him.
I look forward with glee to his demolitions of Brooks, Moral Hazard and all. I also like that he’s keeping his boot on the neck of the RC Cardinals when most of their shenanigans go unnoticed.

PPP has Obama 50-42 for 2nd week in a row. PPP also has Obama up in 10 of 11 swing states and tied in the other.

And Romney just mercilessly mocked/bullied a female coffee shop owner in Iowa; revealed that he didn’t know what a donut was; he called for the firing of the heroes of Sept 11th, and just today, he was reduced to using 7th grade snap-towel antics.

There’s something really wrong with him.

I think I’m going to yell very loudly at no one the next time I hear or see a comment like “they’re both the same” or “Obama is a neo-conservative who happens to be a Democrat” or “Why vote? It doesn’t matter, they’re all bought by corporations.”

Hey, I get the sentiment, but don’t be a dumb fuck and not vote, or vote for the Greens, or Socialists or whatever (note: I like the Greens and Socialists, but I’m not going to vote for them). When Romney’s coalition of ‘teh stoopid’ and monocled bankers win the election because progressive/liberals stayed home out of some sense of entitled outrage, you can feel all smug and principled I guess, and then whine for 4 years. Don’t like some of what Obama’s done? Then put the pressure on after he’s re-elected. Don’t drink the haterade just because the MSM needs to keep the election ‘exciting’ by trashing POTUS.

    @mclaren:

You are sounding more stupid tonight than you usually do. Jeebus. You and all your “liberal” buddies refuse to vote for Barack “World’s Worst Monster” Obama and then try to taunt actual real-life liberals (not the ones who are voices in your head) about how you hope we enjoy a Romney presidency? Really? Are you one of those braindead idiots who are cheering Romney on because, by some mysterious process, America will suddenly become a progressive wonderland with unicorns shitting out gold coins for us all after we see the horrors of the Romney administration?

What am I saying. It’s mclaren. Of course she’s one of those idiots. FTR, I, an actual liberal for the almost forty years and eight presidential elections since I turned eighteen, do not know a single liberal who won’t enthusiastically be at the polls in November, voting for Obama and feeling good about doing so. You must run in some very small circles of liberalism if so many of your liberal acquaintances aren’t voting for Obama. Like you maybe know three people who call themselves liberals, but two of them are Jane Hamsher and Glenn Greenwald, who aren’t actual, you know, liberals.

I suspect by Sept when the polls tighten up even more (and they will) Cole will be spewing on about how if only Obama had listened to Greenwald and not shot missles from Drones. If only he had helped in Winsconson.

Mark my words. Cole is that dumb. All he needs is Greenwald to tell him to think that and it’s only a matter of time till Greenwald goes there.

Obama is in severe danger of only winning 35 states instead of 40. Anything a journalist has to say otherwise is trying to make a horserace out of it – where one side has a horse and the other has an old dude with a walker.

    To The Presidential Contenders:

Would you like to know what wakes me up in the middle of the night and keeps me awake?

It is not the deficit. It is not same sex marriage. It is not women getting free contraception (more power to them, I say!). It’s none of those “wedge” issues. Just exactly who they think they are wedging is unclear to me.

I, too will steal the slogan from Charles P. Pierce’s Daily Politics Blog at Esquire Magazine that repeats over and over again: “I’ve got no job, and I’ve got no fucking money” is what is keeping me up at night and I honestly do not know where my next nickel is coming from or if I’ll ever draw a paycheck from this once great nation again.

So Barack, keep talking about the deficit and pour over your “kill list”, and you, Mitt, can continue your little pranks on the man who should never have been president while you piss away millions of dollars on ads I will not watch.

Go for it assholes, because I know this election is not about me and mine.
