Should I panic? I should panic, right? PANIC!

So, the 4 week average for first time unemployment claims is now the highest it has been in 7 months. Job growth has stalled.
The House is sitting on the Senate’s bipartisan transportation bill(and has been for months) that would create 1.9 million jobs. They’ve been blocking Obama’s jobs bill since last year. The public sector is shrinking at a rate not seen since the demobilization of the Korean War, almost entirely due to the Republican morons at the state level that think they can cut their way to growth. State aid would go a long way to solving this problem, but Republicans in congress aren’t down for that. The Republicans are also cutting food stamps and unemployment benefits, the two most efficiently stimulative polices the government can employ.
What more will it take for the media to get a f’n clue about the Republicans’ blatant economic sabotage? When will it be OK for someone outside the media to point this out without being shouted down for their tone?
beltane
@Hill Dweller: The media is assisting the Republicans in their sabotage of the economy, so “getting a clue” is not on the menu.

iz not jobs report. iz proxy for pace of layoffs amongst private and public sector workers, and proxy for population of unemployed receiving benefits. interpretation of data is clouded by convergence of a number of factors including seasonal employment/unemployment, state budget issues affecting hiring, and the phase out of extended benefit programs. iz complicated, but several other measures are giving similar indications (e.g. jolts from BLS) so where you see convergence from different measures using different methods, you can be a bit more confident.

I think the American people are the ones who need a clue.
The media is BOUGHT.
Not clueless, not cowed, not confused, not searching for a horserace, not fickle, not chasing shiny objects, not math-challenged.
They are owned and manipulated for purposes of propaganda, just as happened in Europe in the 1920’s. They are excused, mass media was something new.
History f’ing repeats because we forgot.

And in other news, some good news for this morning: the Illinois Attorney General and Cook County (Chicago) State’s Attorney have refused to defend the state’s ban on gay marriage against suits filed by 25 couples. You go, girls!

This is good news for Mitt Romney.
Actually, bad job news is good news for Mitt Romney. But he’s at odds with Republican governors, who keep looking for pearls of good news in the job reports. “Stop saying anything good about the economy” the Romney campaign is pleading.
There’s something so deliciously schadenfreude-y about that.

@Valdivia: It makes me wonder how much Peter Brant Sr. paid someone in the NYT to spike up interest in a reality show that he’s so dead set against.
If I had had the misfortune to be standing next to the one who said, “I’m interested in 18th-century furniture, late-19th-century art, the Arts and Crafts movement and history of the mid- to late-19th century,” I would have done a spit-take all over him.

Obama needs to start talking about a set of simple solutions that would immediately reduce unemployment(state funding, infrastructure spending), and blame congressional Republicans for them not passing.

No parody whatsoever. Tripe no less disgusting is peddled each and every Thursday in the NYT’s “ThursdayStyles” section. Last week’s lead story: “The Empress Is In: Amy Sacco, queen bee of New York night life reveals her latest star-studded den.”
But all this is mere titillation of the demimonde when compared to the Times’ weekly genuflection to the New Versaiies, its “SundayStyles” section.
Evidence for the Jacobin prosecution: the above-the-fold story last Sunday, “Declaration of Independence: Wendi Murdoch, out her husband’s shadow, is creating a career of her own.”
Yes, “even the liberal NYT” deems the third wife of disgraced huckster and international criminal mastermind Rupert worthy of such fawning praise and attention.

We know who and what the Republicans are. We know who and what the MSM is.
What we need is a “Enough is enough. I’ve had it with these motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking plane” moment.
We need Obama to get real fucking real real fucking soon. Congress ain’t gonna do shit. The media ain’t gonna do shit. The only motherfucker that can do some shit right now is the President. Sorry. I just don’t see it any other way. He has got to shame these SOBs. He has got to get the American public – including independents and moderate Republicans – on his side.
Look – Obama came out for gay marriage. Now a majority of black people favor same-sex unions. Black clergy are coming out in favor of gay marriage.
Yeah, use that bully motherfucking pulpit. Shit is getting real serious right now.

@El Tiburon: Well, there you went and did it! The sanctimonious analyses about how FDR wasn’t really FDR will come pouring in any moment now.
Unfortunately, Obama is just not wired that way. It’s funny because the RW has already portrayed him as an angry, militant demagogue who wants to cannabilize gestating white babies. So what difference would it make?
But Obama doesn’t do outrage.
For his brief time in the sun, I thought Howard Dean was quite good at that but you know, he screamed over a huge gathering of other screaming people one time at a rally (and the sounds of the screaming crowd were edited out by the media) and that was unforgivable, by his own party possessed of the most delicate and tender feelings, who, at the time,loved the Iraq war anyway until everybody just got tired of it.
But he screamed, my God, it was terrifying. The thought of it, it still makes my blood run cold.
THE HORROR, THE HORROR.

Looks like to me we are stuck between a rock and a hardplace and an immoveable object with no where to turn.
Congress is dead in the water. The media is about as useful a second butt-hole. The courts tilt to the right and the Supreme Court seems poised to really jump off a cliff.
And so what is left? The economy is not really improving. After 8 years of the most disastrous administration in the history of the United States, we only seem capable of moving to the right.
Who or what can begin to fight against that? Who in this country has the loudest and most visible platform?
Please answer if you can. Or, if you prefer, you can hurl more insults at me.

Of course, FDR got his New Deal passed by promising Southern Democrats that those dirty n*s wouldn’t get any of the benefits, or at least not as many as white men would get. And he also agreed to block any federal anti-lynching legislation that would give the feds the power to investigate why white Southerners kept murdering black men.
So tell us, which minority group is it okay for Obama to throw under the bus in order to get his economic agenda passed like FDR did?

Did you read my comment or simply see it was El Tib who wrote it, saw I referenced FDR, then go to your little scribble book for a retort?
Very clearly I stated Obama needs to do something to get independents and Mod Republicans and even a lot of Dems on the same fighting page.
But of course in Simpletonville, the space in which you occupy – history must always repeat itself in the same exact way.
Again, I’ll submit for a response: if Congress is not going to do anything, the media is not going to do anything, the courts are not going to fuck it all up, then WHO is left to do something?
And business as usual ain’t working. So how about Obama try something different? What’s the worse that can happen? Congress refuses to work with him and the Media pushes along right-wing bullshit?
Oh for shame.
Mnemosyne
@El Tiburon:
You mean like announcing that ICE isn’t going to pursue deportation of college kids who were brought here as children and basically do everything within his executive powers to implement as much of the failed DREAM Act as he can since Congress refuses to do anything about it?
Yes, if only Obama would do something like that. I don’t know why he won’t. It must be because you’re right and he’s too terrified of the press and the Republicans.
El Tiburon
@Mnemosyne:
Ok, so you seem to be making my point for me.
So he took a somewhat(?) bold action – an Executive action for an action that Congress wouldn’t do.
Are you saying to me he can’t do a similar thing for the dismal jobs that is the basis of this entire post? Are you telling me there is absolutely NOTHING he can do?
And look, I never once said he was afraid of the press or the Republicans. I clearly said, multiple times, that the fucking Congress and the PRess are of NO HELP. What part of that do you not understand? And we know this. So bitching about the Congress and the Press may give you morning wood, but it doesn’t help the cause.
But Obama, now, he CAN do something. You just said so. But for jobs and the American people, he can do nothing. Is this correct?
Mnemosyne
@El Tiburon:
Not at all. My supposition is that there’s a plan being developed that will be rolled out in the next few weeks to bypass Congress and do some of the things that are within the power of the executive.
The difference between us is that you are going to be shocked and astonished when the plan comes out because you’re assuming that nothing is being contemplated because Obama hates jobs and the American people. I’m assuming that the plan is being worked on and will be announced relatively soon, probably after Congress takes their summer recess and can’t do anything to block it.
El Tiburon

@El Tiburon: The economic speech the other day specifically called out Republicans in Congress. Its key premise was that there are two contrasting paths, and the Republicans have tried it their way and made a mess, so don’t let them do that again. I’ve seen ads about how Congress won’t act to pass Obama’s plan to put people back to work. IOW he’s already using the rhetoric and tactics you want him to use.
Mnemosyne
@El Tiburon:
Here, let’s do a bet: if Obama comes out with a jobs plan using his executive branch powers prior to August 1st, then you donate $20 to the Obama campaign. If he doesn’t, then I’ll donate $20 to whatever Green Party or Libertarian candidate you’ve decided to back. Deal?
El Tiburon
@FlipYrWhig:

-huh waht? Sorry you had me so bored my head fell on the keypad.
Two contrasting paths? Are you fucking serious? These are not “two contrasting paths”. One is a path to destroy the fabric of this country and give everything to the elites. No, we don’t need a “contrasting paths” speech.
Did you read my original comment? The part about “…SNAKES ON A MOTHERFUCKING PLANE…” This is what we need. We need a President who realizes one political party is waging war on its citizens and act accordingly. When it’s time to bail out the bankers again, see how fast Obama works then.
But for us? Not so much. Just not politically doable. Bullshit. Make it happen. Be. Be the ball Danny.

@Hill Dweller: EXACTLY!
Can someone please ask the GOP why they refuse to pass the Transportation Bill or any other legislation to create jobs? President Obama is holding up his end of the bargain by proposing job bills. The Repubs are doing nothing but obstructing. And harassing the Attorney General.
Patricia Kayden
@El Tiburon: If President Obama can issue an Executive Order which would help create jobs, that would be great. I’m thinking that if he could, he would have done so already. Perhaps he’ll surprise us like he did with marriage equality and the Dream Act.
Mnemosyne
@El Tiburon:
Nope, sorry. You don’t get to decide that only your specific preferred jobs program is permitted and if Obama doesn’t meet your exact specifications, it doesn’t count.
Your claim was that nothing would be done. Either stand by your own statement or STFU.
