I think being held in contempt by the Republican House is an excellent resume builder right now.
lamh35
If the video is eventually available, ya’ll should check out Holder’s reading of his statement that was shown on CNN.

Republican Fail: hold meaningless, cynical contempt vote seven hours after John Roberts won the news cycle.
Bullsmith
I got an idea. How about Holder responds by actively investigating and, wherever appropriate laying charges and vigorously prosecuting, anyone who tries to deny valid U.S. Citizens of their right to vote.
If they’re gonna call him a partisan witch hunter, why not go hunting? As it turns out, there’s a an actual criminal conspiracy ongoing among Republicans to thwart democracy in many states.
But it’s not gonna happen. That’d be like thinking fraud laws apply to everyone who commits fraud.
Enhanced Voting Techniques
@West of the Cascades: Yes, they couldn’t at lest hold off until next Monday to give the pretense of gravitas? Pathetic.
JPL
I’m shocked..just shocked.
Comrade Mary
I like to imagine the Republican House as a collection of very tall and easily misled men who are only capable of repeating the words HOLDER! HOLDER. HOLDER HOLDER HOLDER. HOLDER?
Brachiator
The straw, it is grasped at.
Jose Padilla
What are the names of the 17 Democrats who voted in favor. I’d like to know how many are being primaried so I could send money to their challengers.
Chris
@West of the Cascades:
People at PJMedia were freaking out a couple of days ago that it was some kind of conspiracy that the House had scheduled the vote on a day that they knew the Supreme Court decision would overshadow it.
lamh35
here’s a list of the 17 Dems who voted to hold Holder in Contempt. It’s from a Politico link, but refuse to give em the page views.
beltane
Right on the heels of the conservative Chief Justice Roberts attempting to improve the standing of the Supreme Court, the Republicans in Congress do the exact opposition thing with regards to the House of Representatives.
They need to get their asses kicked in November.
Felinious Wench
OT, but delicious. For the first time, I have visited Red State today, and this comment on the ACA decision is just PRICELESS.
But….Hannity and Rove said it would go down! Has no one told the UN?

@lamh35:
Run those bastards out of their districts on rails . . .
MattR
@lamh35: Any idea about the 2 Republicans who voted nay
@kc: I got a fundraising email from Kathy Hochul yesterday. Instead of money, she’ll be getting an earful (eyeful?) from me.

Leave it to the wingnuts to back the ICJ for something that would be laughed all the way out of the Hague.
Culture of Truth
We need to see all of Issa’s e-mails relating to this vote.
General Stuck
If I was Holder, I would start walking around with a heavily armed FBI swat team, and dare the cheesy mother fuckers in the wingnut House, to arrest me. What do they have? A bunch of fat campus cops, full of Barney Fifes.
beltane
@Felinious Wench: Let me get this straight. This Redstate commenter wants the hated United Nations to step in and take away people’s health care? These people are so frigging stupid I’m amazed they can manage to brush their teeth in the morning.
Raven
Barrow is such a shit-eatin dog fucker I can’t even express it.

@Raven: i am pretty sure you just did ;)

@Comrade Mary:
I see what you did there. But can you really imagine any GOP Congressman gently carrying a paralyzed boy?

This.

You have to see the video of Mean Jean Schmidt flipping out when the word came down the mandate was defeated!

@Felinious Wench:
I would wear it as a badge of honor. Nothing says you’re not ‘one of them’ like a vote held by ‘them’ that says exactly that. Holder is black and isn’t conservative, he’s not one of them.
Thus their vote to hold him in contempt, they hate him.
Comrade Mary
@elmo: Hey, I’m only halfway through the books. Maybe there’s a lot more to learn about Hoder and the potential depths to which he can sink. I stand by my analogy.

@Felinious Wench: Red State wants the UN to intervene?

@lamh35:
Where’s Manchin? I figured he’s be on that list.
dmsilev
@Felinious Wench: Did Rove have The Math ™?
beltane
@Violet: Manchin is in the Senate so he couldn’t have voted for this no matter how much he wanted to.
Scott S.
@Culture of Truth: We need to see all of Issa’s e-mails to anti-government domestic terror organizations.
I think it’s important to know how much of the FBI’s files he was sending over to them.
dmsilev
@Violet: House vote only, not Senate.
Raven
@Violet: He’s a senator, this is the house.
Violet
@beltane:
Oh, right. Duh. I’m half reading this and half watching TV. Brain’s not fully engaged.

I just don’t understand this wingnut hissy-fit, pissing-your-pants panic. The ACA is asking people to buy their own health insurance. And the deadline is two years. And if you can’t afford it, the government will assist you.
How this translates into ‘OMG, we’re all about to be sold into slavery to the Mole people and why, oh, why, can’t the same groups we villified in the past, come and save us !!!”
scav
Ah, Contempt where is thy sting?
lamh35
@lamh35: BTW, On the second vote for a civil contempt vote, their were 21 Dems who voted yay.
House Approves Civil Holder Contempt Resolution
j
In other words, as far as FOX is concerned the ACA ruling is relegated to the back burner and it is now 24/7 BAD BLACK GUY!!
NEW BLACK PANTHERS!! FAST & FURIOUS!!
There will be scant talk about the ACA for the next week. And NO mention of how FOX got it wrong this morning.
Felinious Wench
@Enhanced Voting Techniques:
The UN or The Hague. Because we must be sanctioned for reforming health care, I suppose. Send in the Peacekeepers!
Other commentators quickly said (paraphrasing) “the UN has no authority to assert!” Which is correct. But the fact that they’ve gone this far off the deep end over today’s decision, the collective weeping and gnashing of teeth and doomsday predictions of the fall of Western Civilization and their bank accounts, is just too much not to revel in. I am having the best time I’ve had in a while. The fact it seems to be due to Justice Roberts is disconcerting, but hey, I’ll take it.
I’m sure I should feel empathy for how betrayed and scared and hurt these people feel today, but I don’t. I…just…don’t.
Villago Delenda Est
@Violet:
Alas, Manchin is a Senator. He doesn’t get to vote in the House.
Not that he wasn’t with them in spirit, I’m sure.
On edit: Dogpile on Violet!

BFD. The Bush WH set the precedent of contempt votes being meaningless. These guys can all go jump in the Potomac.

@lamh35: Damn, half the Democrats from MN (the ones from large rural districts) buckled to the gun freaks. The two that didn’t are Keith Ellison and Betty McCollum, the pair that represent Minneapolis and St. Paul, respectively.
Betty’s my rep, but I gave money to Tim Walz because I thought he was going to be good for MN. He’s turned out to be kind of a shit.

Ah, I see now. They held the vote to give Fox something to talk about instead of ACA. heh, twisted, but brilliant.

That really is what this is all about. The practical effects are totally secondary to this.

I was so glad to see Robin Hayes (R-NC) get booted out by anyone, ANYONE, but Kissell has been some weak-ass tea…Oh, welp. I think I’m a gonna get the Costco big box of popcorn and enjoy the self-immolations.

@kc: It may well happen soon in Matheson’s case. He’s my Rep, sadly enough, and the Blue Doggiest SOB he is. I’m still going to vote for him because a Democrat who votes like a Redoublechin still counts toward a majority of the House, which we badly need. Even if it’s only because then the Pubs can’t initiate all that horrific stupid they’re doing now.
ETA: due to some redistricting fuckery, Matheson may be in trouble this year. He’s been around for a long time and is a local favorite (his dad was a popular Utah governor, which helps) but who knows now.

@Linda Featheringill:
In theory, Holder can be arrested by the Capital Police, and held in jail, and the House actually has its own jail built just for this sort of thing, until he coughs up the docs. I would say the wingers wouldn’t dare, but I can’t. The legalities beyond that are very complicated, especially with Obama extending executive privilege, which puts this action so far off the rails of the normal, nothing would surprise me. House republicans are insane, and can be viewed as nothing more than seditious hacks staging a congressional coup. This is the sort of stuff that sometimes precedes civil wars. It is not funny, in the least.

Conservatism Is A Cult
Look at how much PROGRESS America’s made over the last 80 years! Nowadays, the bellowing, angry white mob takes a vote before they lynch the black guy!
Mr. Longform
Joe Donnelly is my rep, running for Richard Lugar’s senate seat against a clearly insane tea-party jihadist. What is to be done? I am so ashamed of him, so mad at him, but the tea party guy running against him is bat-shit right-wing burn-the-witches nuts. Donnelly is merely a coward and a fool. Maybe I’ll just move.
Not Sure
I think House Democrats should boycott the remainder of the 112th Congress. Somebody says something, have Nancy say, “just let me know when there’s something worth voting on, and we’ll show up to vote on it.”

Why do that, aren’t you thrilled that they passed three new “free trade” deals and further deregulation of securities
